Words without mind.

A woman (LR), unconscious for 20 years, spontaneously produces infrequent, isolated words unrelated to any environmental context. Fluorodeoxy-glucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) imaging coregistered with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mean brain metabolism equivalent to deep anesthesia. Nevertheless, PET imaging demonstrated islands of modestly higher metabolism that included Broca's and Wernicke's areas. Functional brain imaging with magnetoencephalographic (MEG) imaging, a technique providing a temporal resolution of better than 1 msec, identified preserved dynamic pa

A mind of one's own.

The author argues that in the transference the patient unconsciously identifies the analyst with what he has projected into him, creating what Strachey called an external phantasy object. In the intimate rapport of the analytic session, the analyst tends to identify with these projections as well, which brings him into a relationship with the patient that complements the patient's narcissistic object relationship with him. The analyst's identification with the patient's projections is a type of pathology of his receptivity to the patient that is exacerbated by the patient's skill at producing

Mindfulness buffers the effect of negative affect on rumination: A daily diary study during a mindfulness-based intervention.

Negative affect automatically triggering rumination is a core pathological mechanism underlying emotional distress. While mindfulness is hypothesized to buffer this process, few studies have dynamically tracked these effects during systematic interventions. The study employed a single-arm daily diary design during an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) to investigate whether daily mindfulness buffers the effect of negative affect on rumination. A sample of 116 participants with emotional distress completed daily assessments of mindfulness, negative affect, and state rumination during t…

Conceptualizing and Measuring Mindfulness in School Settings: A Mixed Methods Study and Development of Mindfulness in School Scale.

This study aimed to explore how mindfulness is perceived and experienced by teachers and to develop and validate the Mindfulness in School Scale (MSS) for use in school settings. An exploratory sequential mixed methods design was employed. In the qualitative phase, phenomenological interviews were conducted with 23 teachers selected through purposive maximum variation sampling. Content analysis identified six themes: Self-Observation, Environmental Observation, Self-Awareness, Environmental Awareness, Acceptance, and Reactive Control. These findings informed the development of the MSS. In the …

The relationship between trait mindfulness and affective symptoms: A meta-analysis of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ).

Trait mindfulness appears to be related to lower levels of negative affective symptoms, but it remains uncertain which facets of mindfulness are most important in this relationship. Accordingly, the present meta-analysis examined studies reporting correlations between affective symptoms and trait mindfulness as assessed by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. A comprehensive search yielded 148 eligible studies, comprising 157 distinct samples and 44,075 participants. The weighted mean correlation for affective symptoms and overall trait mindfulness was r = -0.53. Among mindfulness facets,…

Mindfulness starts with the body: somatosensory attention and top-down modulation of cortical alpha rhythms in mindfulness meditation.

Using a common set of mindfulness exercises, mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have been shown to reduce distress in chronic pain and decrease risk of depression relapse. These standardized mindfulness (ST-Mindfulness) practices predominantly require attending to breath and body sensations. Here, we offer a novel view of ST-Mindfulness's somatic focus as a form of training for optimizing attentional modulation of 7-14 Hz alpha rhythms that play a key role in filtering inputs to primary sensory neocortex and organizing the flow of sensory i…

COVID-19 Vaccines: "Warp Speed" Needs Mind Melds, Not Warped Minds.

In this review, we address issues that relate to the rapid "Warp Speed" development of vaccines to counter the COVID-19 pandemic. We review the antibody response that is triggered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection of humans and how it may inform vaccine research. The isolation and properties of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies from COVID-19 patients provide additional information on what vaccines should try to elicit. The nature and longevity of the antibody response to coronaviruses are relevant to the potency and duration of vaccine-induced immunity.

Does mindfulness change the mind? A novel psychonectome perspective based on Network Analysis.

If the brain is a complex network of functionally specialized areas, it might be expected that mental representations could also behave in a similar way. We propose the concept of 'psychonectome' to formalize the idea of psychological constructs forming a dynamic network of mutually dependent elements. As a proof-of-concept of the psychonectome, networks analysis (NA) was used to explore structural changes in the network of constructs resulting from a psychological intervention. NA was applied to explore the effects of an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in healthy part…

Brief mindfulness meditation increases risk-taking behavior.

Brief mindfulness-based meditation exerts a potent influence on social cognition. What is not yet understood, however, is whether and how it impacts an important facet of daily life-risk taking. Specifically, it is unclear the extent to which a single episode of mindfulness meditation shapes risk-taking behavior. Addressing this issue, here we examined the effects of mindfulness meditation on risk taking using two established experimental paradigms (i.e., Expt. 1: Balloon Analogue Risk Task; Expt. 2: Bomb Risk Elicitation Task), participants from different cultural milieus (i.e., Expt. 1: UK; …

Inflammation, sleep, and trait mindfulness in pregnancy.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive systemic inflammation during pregnancy is a risk for adverse birth outcomes. Maternal sleep is related to systemic inflammation and may be modifiable through mindful thoughts and behaviors. In this cohort study, we explored the relationships among inflammation, sleep quality, and mindfulness during pregnancy. METHODS: Pregnant persons (N = 122) 31.3 ± 5.3 years old, 32% self-identified Black and 57% self-identified White, were recruited during the second and third trimesters. Inflammation was assessed using interleukin-6 (IL-6). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was use…

Pain, mindfulness, and placebo: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is a complex phenomenon influenced by psychosocial variables, including the placebo effect. The effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for pain has been demonstrated in experimental studies and systematic reviews, but the mechanisms of action are only starting to be established. Whether the expectations of individuals experiencing pain can be manipulated during MBIs remains to be systematically evaluated, and what role placebo effects might play remains to be explored. METHODS: To evaluate the literature analyzing placebo effects in MBIs for pain, we perfor…

Issues of mindfulness implementation for oncology caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Burn out is high in oncology. We aim to evaluate the feasibility and identify the barriers for mindfulness implementation in oncology professionals. METHODS: We conducted a pilot study in which voluntary oncology caregivers entered mindfulness workshops, and complete online questionnaires. We also conducted a qualitative study to better identify the practical reasons which hamper the implementation of mindfulness in oncology caregivers having refused to participate. RESULTS: 83.3% of volunteers for the workshops were women, 60.00% (16/30) of caregivers completed the program. Care…

Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Mindfulness-based interventions may be beneficial psychosocial treatments for improving the health and well-being of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This article reviews eight studies, assessing seven psychosocial interventions, which include mindfulness and/or meditation components. Strongest effects of the interventions were found in quality of life and anxiety/depression, with inconsistent or minimal changes in other psychosocial areas, such as perceived stress and in disease-related outcomes and other physiologic functioning. Mindfulness interventions for patients with inflammato…

[The impact of mindfulness meditation on anger].

This study explores the impact of mindfulness meditation on anger. A meditation group (N = 37) attended 5-10 minutes of mindfulness meditation daily for a week. They were assessed with self-report scales measuring three aspects of anger (rumination, arousal, and lengthiness) before, just after, and four weeks after their one-week participation. Their scores were compared to a control group (N = 27), which was assessed at the same intervals as the meditation group. The meditation group was also asked to evaluate their current mood using the Affect Grid before and after each meditation. The resu…

Mindfulness-Based Analgesia or Placebo Effect? The Development and Evaluation of a Sham Mindfulness Intervention for Acute Experimental Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Meta-analyses indicate that mindfulness meditation is efficacious for chronic and acute pain, but most available studies lack active control comparisons. This raises the possibility that placebo-related processes may account, at least in part, for mindfulness effects. The objective of this study was to develop a closely matched sham mindfulness condition to establish whether placebo effects contribute to mindfulness-based interventions for pain. METHODS: We developed and validated a closely matched sham mindfulness intervention then compared it with 6 × 20-minute sessions of focuse…
