Habitat modification for mosquito control in the Ilparpa Swamp, Northern Territory, Australia.

Habitat modification is an established method of effective long-term mosquito management, particularly in salt-marsh environments. It is especially pertinent when mosquitoes are known vectors of life-threatening disease and their larval breeding habitat is in close proximity to residential areas. The Ilparpa Swamp is located less than 10 km from Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Wet season rainfall, often followed by effluent discharges to the swamp from the adjacent sewage treatment plant, create ideal sites for the immature stages of the common banded mosquito Culex annulirostris (Skuse), a

Feasibility of wing beat sound trap for the control of mosquito vectors.

Early observations suggested that the female sound was a possible cause of mating. Attempts had been made for introduction of female wing beat sound for removal male mosquitoes from the population for the control purpose. The traps emitted female wing beat sound, were set on black clothes as a swarm marker, could collect a large number of male Cx. tritaeniorhynchus in Japan. Those traps were later improved with introduction of two attractants, hamster and dry ice. Consequently, two systems were adopted for efficiency trapping of males and females. A cylinder trap with 350 Hz of wing beat frequ

Synergistic mosquito control via integration of spider peptide neurotoxin and Pyrethroid insecticide.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of human diseases, with Anopheles sinensis posing substantial health risks across Asia. Although pyrethroids remain widely deployed, their effectiveness is compromised by resistance associated with sodium channel mutations. Spider peptide neurotoxins are potential biopesticides. Here, we evaluated the insecticidal efficacy of the Pardosa pseudoannulata neurotoxin PPTX-04, both alone and in combination with pyrethroids, against A. sinensis. Bioassays were conducted on laboratory and field populations, and functional analyses were performed on wild-type and mutan

Molecular tools to create new strains for mosquito sexing and vector control.

Vector control programs based on population reduction by matings with mass-released sterile insects require the release of only male mosquitoes, as the release of females, even if sterile, would increase the number of biting and potentially disease-transmitting individuals. While small-scale releases demonstrated the applicability of sterile males releases to control the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, large-scale programs for mosquitoes are currently prevented by the lack of efficient sexing systems in any of the vector species.Different approaches of sexing are pursued, including classi

Bivalent Carbamates as Novel Control Agents of the Malaria Mosquito, Anopheles gambiae.

Widespread pyrethroid resistance has caused an urgent need to develop new insecticides for control of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. Insecticide discovery efforts were directed towards the construction of bivalent inhibitors that occupy both the peripheral and catalytic sites of the mosquito acetylcholinesterase (AChE). It was hypothesized that this approach would yield a selective, high potency inhibitor that would also circumvent known catalytic site mutations (e.g. G119S) causing target site resistance. Accordingly, a series of bivalent phthalimide-pyrazole carbamates were prepare

Combining Attractants and Larvicides in Biodegradable Matrices for Sustainable Mosquito Vector Control.

BACKGROUND: There is a global need for cost-effective and environmentally friendly tools for control of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. One potential way to achieve this is to combine already available tools to gain synergistic effects to reduce vector mosquito populations. Another possible way to improve mosquito control is to extend the active period of a given control agent, enabling less frequent applications and consequently, more efficient and longer lasting vector population suppression. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigated the potential of biodegradable wax emulsion

Risk and Control of Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Southeast Asian Rubber Plantations.

Unprecedented economic growth in Southeast Asia (SEA) has encouraged the expansion of rubber plantations. This land-use transformation is changing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Mature plantations provide ideal habitats for the mosquito vectors of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Migrant workers may introduce pathogens into plantation areas, most worryingly artemisinin-resistant malaria parasites. The close proximity of rubber plantations to natural forest also increases the threat from zoonoses, where new vector-borne pathogens spill over from wild animals into humans. There is therefo

[Control of malaria using mosquito nets impregnated with pyrethroids in Burkina Faso].

An experimental trial of malaria control was carried out in the village of Karangasso in the south-west Burkina Faso. It was based on the use by the whole population of deltamethrin impregnated bed nets at 25 mg/m2. During the first year pretreatment data on entomology, parasitology and pathological incidence of malaria were collected in the whole village. During the second year a quarter of the village with a population of 1,200 was chosen for the experiment and impregnated bed nets were given to everybody while the other quarter of the same population size was kept as a control area. Malaria

Innovative sterile male release strategies for Aedes mosquito control: progress and challenges in integrating evidence of mosquito population suppression with epidemiological impact.

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes pose a significant global threat as vectors for several debilitating arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Their unique breeding habits, behavior, and daytime activity complicate control efforts, prompting the search for innovative solutions. The sterile insect technique (SIT) and incompatible insect technique (IIT) are promising new techniques under investigation. This review synthesizes findings from field trials on SIT and/or IIT for Aedes mosquito control. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted through comprehensive searches on S

Willingness to pay for mosquito control: how important is West Nile virus risk compared to the nuisance of mosquitoes?

Public health programs that control mosquitoes and other disease vectors have the added benefit of reducing residents' exposure to pest insects. We surveyed homeowners in Madison, Wisconsin, and used an economic valuation method, stated-choice experiments, to measure willingness to pay (WTP) for control of West Nile virus (WNV)-transmitting and nuisance mosquitoes under current and increased levels of WNV risk. Under current WNV risk levels (approximately 1 in 250,000), the average Madison survey respondent was not willing to pay for programs that targeted West Nile-transmitting mosquitoes onl

Similar Neural Pathways Control Foraging in Mosquitoes and Worms.

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes bite human hosts to obtain a blood meal and, in the process, act as vectors for many disease-causing viruses, including the dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. After a complete meal, the female mosquitoes lose attraction to their hosts for several days. New research shows that pharmacological activation of neuropeptide Y-like receptor (NPYLR) signaling elicits host aversion in female mosquitoes. This behavior of mosquitoes shows remarkable similarities to a bacterial-aversion behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans Feeding on pathogenic

Women's lives in times of Zika: mosquito-controlled lives?

Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of congenital brain abnormalities. Its consequences to pregnancies has made governments, national and international agencies issue advices and recommendations to women. There is a clear need to investigate how the Zika outbreak affects the decisions that women take concerning their lives and the life of their families, as well as how women are psychologically and emotionally dealing with the outbreak. We conducted a qualitative study to address the impact of the Zika epidemic on the family life of women living in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the US,

Controlling vector-borne diseases by releasing modified mosquitoes.

Aedes mosquito-transmitted diseases, such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, are becoming major global health emergencies while old threats, such as yellow fever, are re-emerging. Traditional control methods, which have focused on reducing mosquito populations through the application of insecticides or preventing breeding through removal of larval habitat, are largely ineffective, as evidenced by the increasing global disease burden. Here, we review novel mosquito population reduction and population modification approaches with a focus on control methods based on the release of mosquitoes, inclu

INFRAVEC: research capacity for the implementation of genetic control of mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes represent a major and global cause of human suffering due to the diseases they transmit. These include parasitic diseases, i.e. malaria and filariasis, and viral infections such as dengue, encephalitis, and yellow fever. The threat of mosquito-borne diseases is not limited to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Trade and climate changes have opened new niches to tropical vectors in temperate areas of the world, thus putting previously unaffected regions at risk of disease transmission. The most notable example is the spread of Aedes species, particularly the Asian tiger m

Further development of cinnamodial analogues as mosquito (Aedes aegypti) toxicants for vector control.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are vectors of deadly arboviruses such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika which kill millions worldwide. Prior research by our group discovered a drimane-type sesquiterpene cinnamodial (CDIAL, 1), which was isolated from endemic and medicinal Malagasy plants, that showed promising mosquitocidal activities against A. aegypti. Subsequent synthetic medicinal chemistry efforts to develop more stable and potent mosquitocides derived from CDIAL led to the discovery of novel active compounds with drimane or quinone chemotypes. Here we use medicinal chemistry to fu

Honeysuckle essential oil as a potential source of ecofriendly larvicides for mosquito control.

BACKGROUND: Some plant essential oils have insecticidal properties against mosquitoes and can be harnessed as ecofriendly tools for mosquito control. We conducted bioassays to determine the toxicity of Italian honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium) essential oil and its fractions against larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. RESULTS: Sixteen constituents were identified in honeysuckle essential oil compared to 15, 15, 15, and 11 constituents in fractions A, B, C, and E, respectively. The chemical constituents for fraction D were not determined due to lack of enough fraction sample.

The portfolio effect cushions mosquito populations and malaria transmission against vector control interventions.

BACKGROUND: Portfolio effects were first described as a basis for mitigating against financial risk by diversifying investments. Distributing investment across several different assets can stabilize returns and reduce risks by statistical averaging of individual asset dynamics that often correlate weakly or negatively with each other. The same simple probability theory is equally applicable to complex ecosystems, in which biological and environmental diversity stabilizes ecosystems against natural and human-mediated perturbations. Given the fundamental limitations to how well the full complexi

Willingness to Pay for Mosquito Control in Key West, Florida and Tucson, Arizona.

Mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus (WNV) and dengue are growing threats to the United States. Proactive mosquito control is one strategy to reduce the risk of disease transmission. In 2012, we measured the public's willingness to pay (WTP) for increased mosquito control in two cities: Key West, FL, where there have been recent dengue outbreaks, and Tucson, AZ, where dengue vectors are established and WNV has been circulating for over a decade. Nearly three quarters of respondents in both cities (74% in Tucson and 73% in Key West) would be willing to pay $25 or more annually toward a
