Distribution of acetylcholinesterase activity in the deutocerebrum of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta.

We have used a cytochemical technique to investigate the distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the deutocerebrum of the brain of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta. To distinguish between extra- and intracellular pools of the enzyme, some brains were treated prior to histochemical staining with echothiophate, an irreversible AChE inhibitor which penetrates cell membranes very slowly and, therefore, inhibits only extracellular AChE. In the antennal nerve, fascicles of presumably mechanosensory fibers show echothiophate-insensitive AChE activity. They bypass the antennal lobe and pr

Vitamin A deficiency: effect on retinal structure of the moth Manduca sexta.

Sphingid moths (Manduca sexta) were reared for several generations on an artificial diet deficient in vitamin A and its precursors. Retinal tissue from depleted moths was removed for histological examination. There was extensive histolysis in the retinal epithelium and underlying nervous and connective tissues. This pathology correlated with severe visual impairment, even though normal growth, metamorphosis, and reproduction occurred. In the adult this pathology could be reversed when the larvae were reared only on tobacco (its usual host) or on the artificial diet supplemented with beta-carot…

Temperature niche and body size condition phenological responses of moths to urbanization in a subtropical city.

Urbanization in temperate climates often advances the beginning and peak of biological events due to multiple factors, especially urban heat islands. However, the effect of urbanization on insect phenology remains understudied in more tropical areas, where temperature may be a weaker phenological cue. We surveyed moths across an urban gradient in a subtropical city weekly for a year to test how impervious surface and canopy cover impact phenology at the caterpillar and adult life stages. For macro-moths, we also examine how these effects vary with life history traits. When pooling all individu…

Lactobacillus spp. in the reproductive system of female moths and mating induced changes and possible transmission.

BACKGROUND: The microbiome in the insect reproductive tract is poorly understood. Our previous study demonstrated the presence of Lactobacillus spp. in female moths, but their distribution and function remain unclear. Lactobacillus spp. are known as the 'Работает' vaginal microbiome in humans. RESULTS: Here, we studied the microbiome in the reproductive system (RS) and gut of Spodoptera frugiperda using 16S rDNA sequences. The obtained 4315 bacterial OTUs were classified into 61 phyla and 642 genera, with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidota being the top three dominant phyla and Entero…

Reproduction does not impede the stopover departure to ensure a potent migration in Cnaphalocrocis medinalis moths.

Despite the importance of reproduction in insects, its relation with multi-stop flight remains poorly understood in migratory species. To cl … difference in flight duration, flight distance and flight velocity between mated and virgin female moths, indicating that mated moths remained competent for the subsequent flights as did the virgins. Using an integrated field assay, we identified that over 60% of the female moths in the migrating populations captured by high-altitude searchlights in th …

Are Dried and Powdered Moringa oleifera Lam. Leaves Susceptible to Moths That Feed on Stored Products?

The leaves of Moringa oleifera are increasingly used as a food supplement in several countries due to their nutritional composition, which is rich in protein, vitamins, and mineral salts. Foodstuffs can be damaged by several pests when stored in environments with temperatures that are favorable to insect development; therefore, the susceptibility of M. oleifera leaves to attacks of moths that feed on stored products was tested. Tests were carried out on Pyralid Cadra cautella, Corcyra cephalonica, and Plodia interpunctella, as well as Geometrid Idaea inquinata, which were reared on dried whole…

Low-oxygen atmospheric treatment improves the performance of irradiation-sterilized male cactus moths used in SIT.

As part of sterile insect technique (SIT) programs, irradiation can effectively induce sterility in insects by damaging genomic DNA. However … lipids and proteins. Anoxia treatment that reduced oxidative damage after irradiation also produced moths with greater flight performance, mating success, and longevity, while maintaining F1 male sterility at acceptable levels for SIT. We conclude that anoxia pretreatment followed by irradiation in anoxia is an efficient way to improve the quality of ir …

Responses of male codling moths (Laspeyresia pomonella) to codlemone and other alcohols in a wind tunnel.

The primary pheromone (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (I, codle-mone), 11 further alcohols, and binary blends of both were evaluated for attractiveness as defined by the percentage ofL. pomonella males showing oriented upwind flight terminated by landing at the source within 10 min after release. Sources of I were attractive from 10(-5) μg to 10(1) μg, with approx. 70% males responding at 10(-3)-10(-1) μg. Most other alcohols also showed attractiveness, but the dose-response curves differed greatly with respect to the range of effective lure doses as well as the maximum response level reached at an

Sequence comparisons of odorant receptors among tortricid moths reveal different rates of molecular evolution among family members.

In insects, odorant receptors detect volatile cues involved in behaviours such as mate recognition, food location and oviposition. We have investigated the evolution of three odorant receptors from five species within the moth genera Ctenopseustis and Planotrotrix, family Tortricidae, which fall into distinct clades within the odorant receptor multigene family. One receptor is the orthologue of the co-receptor Or83b, now known as Orco (OR2), and encodes the obligate ion channel subunit of the receptor complex. In comparison, the other two receptors, OR1 and OR3, are ligand-binding receptor sub

Increased EAG responses of tortricid moths after prolonged exposure to plant volatiles: evidence for octopamine-mediated sensitization.

As measured by electroantennograms (EAG), both male and female obliquebanded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and redbanded le … hout volatile pre-exposure exhibited sensitization nearly identical to that induced by pre-exposing moths to sensitizing concentrations of the plant-volatile mixture. Moreover, injection of the OA antagonist chlorpromazine (CP) blocked sensitization by the plant-volatile pre-exposure. Collectively, these findings suggest that exposures of tortricid moth …

Evolutionary genomics of three agricultural pest moths reveals rapid evolution of host adaptation and immune-related genes.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the genotype of pest species provides an important baseline for designing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Recently developed long-read sequence technologies make it possible to compare genomic features of nonmodel pest species to disclose the evolutionary path underlying the pest species profiles. Here we sequenced and assembled genomes for 3 agricultural pest gelechiid moths: Phthorimaea absoluta (tomato leafminer), Keiferia lycopersicella (tomato pinworm), and Scrobipalpa atriplicella (goosefoot groundling moth). We also compared genomes of tomato leafm…

Of moths and men: Theo Lang and the persistence of Richard Goldschmidt's theory of homosexuality, 1916-1960.

Using an analogy between moths and men, in 1916, Richard Goldschmidt proposed that homosexuality was a case of genetic intersexuality. As he strove to create a unified theory of sex determination that would encompass animals ranging from moths to men, Goldschmidt's doubts grew concerning the association of homosexuality with intersexuality until, in 1931, he dropped homosexuality from his theory of intersexuality. Despite Goldschmidt's explicit rejection of his theory of homosexuality, Theo Lang, a researcher in the Genealogical-Demographic Department of the Institute for Psychiatric Research …

WSR-88D doppler radar detection of corn earworm moth migration.

Corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (CEW) populations infesting one crop production area may rapidly migrate and infest distant crop production areas. Although entomological radars have detected corn earworm moth migrations, the spatial extent of the radar coverage has been limited to a small horizontal view above crop production areas. The Weather Service Radar (version 88D) (WSR-88D) continuously monitors the radar-transmitted energy reflected by, and radial speed of, biota as well as by precipitation over areas that may encompass crop production areas. We analyzed data from the WSR-88D ra
