360 cases of salivary glands cysts (= 6%) were collected in the Salivary Glands Register (Institute of Pathology, University of Hamburg) from 1965 until 1979 among a total of 5739 register cases. 273 cases of the cystic lesions (= 76%) were mucoceles of the minor salivary glands. The analysis of these 273 cases revealed the following results: 1. Two types of mucoceles can be morphologically distinguished: extravasation mucoceles and retention mucoceles. 2. The extravasation mucocele is in our material (240 cases = 88.7%) the most frequent type of mucocele. The term "extravasation mucocele" of …

In recent literature, mucoceles have been discovered to be in the appendix vermiformis or in the nasal sinuses. Although rare, colonic mucoceles, as well as rectal mucoceles, have also been encountered. Furthermore, colonic mucoceles arising from a diverticulum is an even more unusual occurrence, and to date, there has been only one reported case. We present a 48-year-old male with a past medical history of multiple episodes of diverticulitis who presented to the emergency department complaining of bilateral lower quadrant abdominal pain for three days. Upon arrival to the emergency department…

Adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified (NOS) is a rare lesion of the salivary glands that can resemble a mucocele. This article presents a case involving a long-standing lesion that was presumed to be a mucocele but was, in fact, a low-grade carcinoma. The subsequent excision is described and follow-up recommendations are made. A review of the literature and characteristics of the lesion also are included.

PURPOSE: Mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus represent 1-2% of all paranasal sinus mucoceles. The aim of this paper is to report our experiences in patients with mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: In a period of 4 years, we observed six patients in whom a mucocele of the sphenoid sinus was suggested pre- or intraoperatively. Symptoms and signs included headache, visual loss and palsies of the III and VI cranial nerve. All patients were investigated by MRI and/or CT. Imaging findings were compared with operative and/or histological findings.
RESULTS: In three cases there were s…

Sphenoid sinus mucoceles are pseudocystic expansile slow-growing processes that arise within the sphenoid sinus. A dynamic process of bone resorption and erosion results in a pseudo-tumoral development. Clinical features and potential risks are related to mass effect with compression of the optic nerves and intracranial extension of the process. CT and MRI allow diagnosis and distinguish mucoceles from skull base tumors or inflammatory diseases. Endonasal endoscopic approach is adapted to the treatment of sphenoid mucoceles and allows marsupialization of the mucoceles.

A mucocele is an epithelial lined mucus-containing sac completely filling a paranasal sinus and capable of expansion. They are relatively unusual, occurring most frequently in the fronto-ethmoidal region. The imaging features on plain X-ray, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are relatively characteristic allowing distinction of the lesion from other pathologies in this area although the mucoceles may occur in association with other pathologies such as nasal polyposis and neoplasia.

The maxillary sinus is an uncommon site for mucoceles within the paranasal sinuses. In this study nine patients with maxillary sinus mucoceles are presented. Six of these patients were treated by open approaches, and three were treated by endoscopic drainage alone. For uncomplicated maxillary sinus mucoceles, endoscopic drainage appears to be a reasonable approach, whereas for more complicated cases extending outside the sinus, open approaches may be required.

BACKGROUND: Mucocele is a cystic dilatation of the vermiform appendix that contains mucous material. It may be caused by benign or malignant diseases.
AIM: To report and discuss four cases with mucocele.
REPORT OF CASES: The main clinical manifestations were abdominal pain and changes in the bowel habits. In two cases, appendiceal mucocele was an incidental finding in the diagnostic work-up or operation for acute diverticulitis and acute cholecystitis, respectively. The diagnostic approach included barium enema and CT scan of the abdomen. In three cases, the mucocele was secondary to mucinou…

The maxillary sinus mucocele is a rare condition and it usually presents clinically as a benign tumor. Sixteen patients were evaluated. A previous history of surgery or injury to maxillary sinus was obtained in 12 cases, the diagnosis being confirmed by computed tomography imaging. Recovery is often complete after Caldwell-Luc operation. The authors discuss some important aspects of diagnosis and treatment.

The neurosurgical manifestations in three patients with sphenoid sinus mucoceles and two others with fronto-ethmoidal mucoceles are presented. In two patients, sphenoid sinus mucoceles produced visual loss while in the other severe headache was the only symptom. Both patients with fronto-ethmoidal mucoceles presented with proptosis. All patients had surgical treatment. While other symptoms were relieved following treatment, visual loss remained unchanged in both patients in whom it was present. We recommend a high level of suspicion for mucoceles as a cause of sudden or progressive visual loss…

Antral mucoceles are a separate entity that must be distinguished from the common, dome-shaped lesions of the floor of the sinus that are also often, although inaccurately, referred to as mucoceles. The latter lesions are known by a variety of names, including pseudocysts, and are innocuous. True antral mucoceles are potentially destructive lesions that are often secondary to trauma, especially the Caldwell-Luc procedure. This article describes in some detail the clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of true antral mucoceles. One type of antral mucocele, commonly seen in Japan, is…
