Excessive joint laxity, or hypermobility, is a common finding of clinical importance in the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Hypermobility is common in young patients and in general is associated with an increased incidence of musculoskeletal injury. Hypermobility has been implicated in ankle sprains, anterior cruciate ligament injury, shoulder instability, and osteoarthritis of the hand. Patients with hypermobility and musculoskeletal injuries often seek care for diffuse musculoskeletal pain and injuries with no specific inciting event. Orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare provi

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the role of sonography in depicting periarticular changes in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to find out whether certain tendons in juvenile SLE patients were different from those of healthy controls.
METHODS: Thirty juvenile SLE patients (27 female, 3 male) were recruited for this study. Sonographic evaluations were performed in the knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints on the nondominant sides of the individuals. For comparison, 32 healthy volunteers were included as a control group.
RESULTS: Knee effusion was observed mor

Acupuncture was offered to patients with lesions affecting the locomotor system. These patients had received conventional physiotherapy treatment with limited success. The lesions treated by acupuncture were hemiplegia, low back pain, frozen shoulder, dropped foot, Sciatica, and arthritis of the knee and hip. Response to acupuncture was excellent in the more acute conditions of low back pain and frozen shoulder, where six treatment sessions were required for complete recovery. The more chronic conditions required many more treatment sessions and the improvement recorded was significant, though

Computed tomography has added another dimension to the evaluation of musculoskeletal disease. The ability to discern subtle differences in tissue densities and the capability of viewing structures in the axial plane has greatly aided the resolution between normal and pathologic tissue and the appreciation of the anatomic relation between normal and pathologic structures. This paper deals with the application of CT in the evaluation of neoplastic, inflammatory, traumatic, metabolic, and congenital diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is an advanced MRI technique that harnesses the movement of water molecules within tissues to assess and characterize a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. By differentiating between isotropic and anisotropic diffusion, DWI provides critical insights into tissue integrity and pathology, proving instrumental in diagnosing conditions. Its sensitivity to changes in tissue microstructure is quantified through metrics like the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA). Advanced methodologies, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) an

Mounting evidence indicates that whereas some fundamental aspects of bone cell differentiation and function are similar in females and males, there is a clear contribution of sex/gender on the effects of signaling molecules on bone mass and strength and, consequently, on the effects of pharmacologic approaches to treat skeletal disorders. However, until recently, most studies were designed and performed using only 1 sex, resulting in a scarcity of published information on sexual dimorphism of the musculoskeletal system, including the mandible/masticatory muscles and the axial and appendicular

Background/Objectives: Urinary incontinence diminishes quality of life, and its severity can be worsened by mobility impairments. This study explored the link between urinary incontinence, osteoarthritis, and back musculoskeletal system disorders, considering pain, mobility issues, and daily activity difficulties. Methods: This cross-sectional study included respondents aged ≥ 15 years from the 2008 Turkish Health Studies Survey (n = 13,976). We assessed self-reported urinary incontinence, daily activity, mobility impairment, pain, osteoarthritis, and musculoskeletal disorders to explore their

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis process of soft tissue sarcomas of the musculoskeletal system (SPBAL) continues to be complex, with cases of unplanned excisions ("whoops" surgeries). This study evaluates the frequency of these type of procedures, trying to indentify patient characteristics, tumors, surgical treatment and final results.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 131 patients treated surgically between October 2018 and December 2021 of a SPBAL were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with SPBAL located in the viscera, mediastinum, heart, retroperitoneum, peritoneum and genital tract were excluded. Diffe

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary care, modern care management, and medical progress have brought significant gains in modern survival rates for children and adolescents with tumors of the musculoskeletal system.
OBSERVATIONS: The surgical approach must rest on the consideration of the long-term orthopedic sequelae likely to be caused by the elected treatment (limb amputation versus limb conservation - reconstruction choices), as well as by adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Complications due to allograft reconstructions (infections, fractures, pseudoarthritis) occur within

Many infectious organisms can lead to musculoskeletal symptoms in children. This article reviews recent studies on rheumatic fever, invasive group A streptococcal infections, septic infections of bones and soft tissues, reactive arthritides caused by viruses, fungi or bacteria, and Lyme disease. The search for etiologic organisms in chronic arthritis continues. Although Koch's postulates are not fulfilled in most cases of infectious arthropathies, progress has been made in diagnosing and treating these diseases.

The manifestations of endocrine derangements in the musculoskeletal system in infancy and childhood are disturbances in growth and maturation and in adulthood are disturbances in maintenance and metabolism. Hypercortisolism during skeletal immaturity suppresses growth. In the adult, hypercortisolism leads to osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, and muscle wasting. Deficiency of growth hormone during skeletal development results in short stature. An excess of growth hormone in a skeletally immature individual results in gigantism, an excess in a skeletally mature individual results in acromegaly. Patie

Twenty-two patients with clinical findings consistent with osteomyelitis, soft-tissue infection, or both were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 1.5 T. Another 15 patients with joint effusion but no clinical or laboratory signs of infection served as controls. Soft-tissue abscesses, osteomyelitis, joint and tendon sheath effusion, and cellulitis were well depicted on MR imaging, allowing the correct diagnosis of presence and extent of infection in all but two cases. MR imaging was as sensitive as technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy in demonstrating osteomyelit

Although tremor is the most common movement disorder, the role of the peripheral musculoskeletal system in shaping tremor is not fully understood. Elucidating how tremorogenic muscle activity propagates through the peripheral musculoskeletal system on its way to becoming tremor at the hand is important for understanding the effects of (and improving) tremor-suppression strategies. We present the first model of tremor propagation throughout the upper limb from tremorogenic muscle activity to hand tremor. Using this linear, time-invariant multi-input multi-output model, we simulated the hand tre

Ultrasound (US) has gained traction in musculoskeletal imaging. There are 2 strong points that have boosted the role of US: the possibility of performing dynamic explorations and of guiding interventional procedures. This article reviews the applications of musculoskeletal image-guided procedures in acute and chronic trauma, excluding those specifically related to sports medicine. Most of them are performed using US guidance. Finally, foreign bodies can also be removed using US. All these procedures are safe and highly effective, sometimes making surgery unnecessary. With minimal invasiveness,
