Economic Status and Old-Age Health in Poverty-Stricken Myanmar.

OBJECTIVE: We examine the association between poverty, economic inequality, and health among elderly in Myanmar. METHOD: We analyze 2012 data from Myanmar's first representative survey of older adults to investigate how health indicators vary across wealth quintiles as measured by household possessions and housing quality. RESULTS: Poverty and poor health are pervasive. Self-assessed health, sensory impairment, and functional limitation consistently improve with higher wealth levels regardless of socio-demographic controls. Differentials in self-rated health and sensory impairment between th…

Growth and milk intake of exclusively breast-fed Myanmar infants.

Twenty-nine exclusively breast-fed infants from moderate and low socio-economic groups were followed-up from birth to 6 months of age. Breast milk intake and body weight of the infants were measured at monthly intervals and morbidity recorded. It is interesting to note that although the mean birth weight of 2.76 kg was only 85 per cent of the NCHS reference standard, catch-up growth occurred whereby the exclusively breast-fed infants attained 94 per cent and 101 per cent of the reference standard at 1 and 2 months of age respectively. At 3 months of age, the mean weight of the infants was 99 p

Dengue transmission dynamics in China's border regions adjacent to Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a major mosquito-borne disease that is spreading rapidly from endemic regions to previously low-incidence regions. The regions at the interface between Southeast Asia and China represent critical hotspots for the cross-border and subsequent local transmission of dengue fever. In this study, a cross-population transmission model was constructed to characterize the transmission dynamics in China's border regions adjacent to Myanmar. METHODS: Dengue case data from the dengue fever case reporting system were collected for Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture (DH…

Emergence of drug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis clinical isolates in Myanmar.

Seven drug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis isolates were obtained from inpatients in three medical settings in Myanmar between February 2017 and January 2021. All isolates were resistant to β-lactams and colistin. Among these, four isolates were resistant to amikacin with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ≥64 µg ml-1. Six of the seven isolates harboured genes encoding intrinsic β-lactamases, including bla B, bla CME and bla GOB, whereas one isolate harboured bla B, bla CME and an incomplete bla GOB gene. Phylogenetic analysis based on whole-genome sequences revealed that several E.…

Sylvatic Transmission of Chikungunya Virus among Nonhuman Primates in Myanmar.

Nonhuman primates living in proximity to humans increase risks for sylvatic arbovirus transmission. We collected serum samples from nonhuman primates in Hlawga National Park near Yangon, Myanmar, and detected antibodies against chikungunya (33%) and Japanese encephalitis (4%) viruses. Buffer zones between primate and human communities might reduce cross-species arbovirus transmission.

Sexually transmitted infections among male highway coach drivers in Myanmar.

A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted from February 2008 to December 2009 at the largest Highway Terminal, Yangon, Myanmar to determine the prevalence of curable STIs (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections, and trichomoniasis), to find out the associated factors for STIs, and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of gonococcal infection among highway drivers. Urine and blood specimens were collected from 601 male highway coach drivers after an interview about their behavior. Standard laboratory tests were carried out to detect STIs. Multivariate analysis was used …

Co-infections with Plasmodium knowlesi and other malaria parasites, Myanmar.

To determine the frequency of co-infections with Plasmodium species in southern Myanmar, we investigated the prevalence of P. knowlesi. More than 20% of patients with malaria had P. knowlesi infection, which occurred predominantly as a co-infection with either P. falciparum or P. vivax.

Impact of intensive control on malaria population genomics in Eastern Myanmar.

The malaria elimination program in Kayin State (Myanmar) utilizes malaria posts for rapid detection and treatment together with mass drug administration (MDA) in high transmission villages, and has reduced transmission by 97%. We examined the impact of control on parasite genomic parameters, using 2270 genome sequenced Plasmodium falciparum infections from 283 malaria posts, sampled over 58-months (2015 - 2020). Parasites were genetically depauperate: 1726 single-genotype infections comprised 166 unique genomes (≥90% IBD), while nine families (≥45% IBD) accounted for 62.5% of parasites sampled…

Drivers of delay in reported malaria care-seeking in Myanmar and Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Timely malaria care-seeking and treatment is crucial to prevent severe illness and reduce onward transmission. This study assessed the reported time to care-seeking and identified its associated factors among febrile patients attending community-based malaria facilities in Myanmar and Thailand. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from febrile patients suspected of malaria who sought care through Village Health Volunteers in Myanmar (December 2017-June 2021) and at malaria clinics and posts in Thailand (January 2018-June 2024). Standardized case record forms in local language…

'Forest malaria' in Myanmar? Tracking transmission landscapes in a diversity of environments.

BACKGROUND: In the Greater Mekong Subregion, case-control studies and national-level analyses have shown an association between malaria tran … ecological environments determined at village level over a period of several years in Kayin State, Myanmar. METHODS: We characterized malaria incidence profiles at village scale based on intra- and inter-annual variations in amplitude, seasonality, and trend over 4 years (2016-2020). Environment was described independently of village localization by ove …

Temporal Dynamics of Subclinical Malaria in Different Transmission Zones of Myanmar.

Countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion have committed to eliminate Plasmodium falciparum malaria by 2025. Subclinical malaria infections that can be detected by highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing in asymptomatic individuals represent a potential impediment to this goal, although the extent to which these low-density infections contribute to transmission is unclear. To understand the temporal dynamics of subclinical malaria in this setting, a cohort of 2,705 participants from three epidemiologically distinct regions of Myanmar was screened for subclinical P. falciparum …

Outbreak of Trichophyton soudanense causing tinea capitis in an orphanage in Myanmar.

We report an outbreak of Trichophyton soudanense causing tinea capitis and corporis in an orphanage in Myanmar. The thirty orphan children were suspected to have anthropophilic tinea but zoonotic tinea could not be excluded as all children were playing with stray dogs. Direct mycological examinations of hair and scalp samples showed filaments but culture assays remained sterile. We revealed T. soudanense as the infectious agent by PCR amplification of extracted fungal DNA and further sequencing of the PCR products. Children were successfully treated by terbinafine and reinfection was prevented…

Prevalence and determinants of TB infection in a rural population in northeastern Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major human threat, as evidenced by the large numbers of cases and deaths, particularly in developing countries with poor economic and educational statuses. Myanmar has one of the highest TB burdens in the world, but no TB information is available for people living in the rural northeastern regions of Myanmar. The present study estimated the prevalence of TB and identified factors associated with TB infection in people living in rural communities in Shan State. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to gather information from participants. People age…

Patterns of motorcycle helmet use - A naturalistic observation study in Myanmar.

Developing countries are subject to increased motorization, particularly in the number of motorcycles. As helmet use is critical to the safety of motorcycle riders, the goal of this study was to identify observable patterns of helmet use, which allow a more accurate assessment of helmet use in developing countries. In a video based observation study, 124,784 motorcycle riders were observed at seven observation sites throughout Myanmar. Recorded videos were coded for helmet use, number of riders on the motorcycle, rider position, gender, and time of day. Generally, motorcycle helmet use in Myan…

Willingness to pay for mortality risk reduction for traffic accidents in Myanmar.

The dramatic increase in vehicle ownership in Myanmar over the past few years has resulted in an alarming increase in traffic accidents. Thus, road safety at the national level needs to be improved urgently in order to reduce the costs associated with traffic accidents and to assist policy makers in making economically efficient resource allocation decisions for road safety improvements. This research was conducted to determine the costs related to fatality risk reductions using a willingness to pay (WTP) approach for motorcyclists, car drivers, and bus passengers in Myanmar. Face-to-face inte…

Clinical, virological and epidemiological characterization of dengue outbreak in Myanmar, 2015.

Hospital-based surveillance was conducted at two widely separated regions in Myanmar during the 2015 dengue epidemic. Acute phase serum samples were collected from 332 clinically diagnosed dengue patients during the peak season of dengue cases. Viremia levels were measured by quantitative real-time PCR and plaque assays using FcγRIIA-expressing and non-FcγRIIA-expressing BHK cells to specifically determine the infectious virus particles. By serology and molecular techniques, 280/332 (84·3%) were confirmed as dengue patients. All four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV) were isolated from among 10…
