Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major global threat, killing more than one million persons each year. With the constant increase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to first- and second-line drugs, there is an urgent need for the development of new drugs to control the propagation of TB. Although screenings of small molecules on axenic M. tuberculosis cultures were successful for the identification of novel putative anti-TB drugs, new drugs in the development pipeline remains scarce. Host-directed therapy may represent an alternative for drug development against TB. Indeed, M. tubercu

Following HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) continues to be the second most deadly infectious disease in humans. The global TB prevalence has become worse in recent years due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively-drug resistant (XDR) strains, as well as co-infection with HIV. Although Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has nearly been used for a century in many countries, it does not protect adult pulmonary tuberculosis and even causes disseminated BCG disease in HIV-positive population. It is impossible to use BCG to eliminate the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) infe

Grisel's syndrome is a non-traumatic subluxation of the atlantoaxial joints, which is caused by an inflammatory process in the upper neck. It is rare to find literary reports of Grisel's syndrome with an evident pathogen in a lesion. For the first time in Korea, we report a 36-year-old female with Grisel's syndrome having an atlantoaxial subluxation, which was caused by a retropharyngeal abscess secondary to pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The patient was treated with an anti-tuberculosis regimen and was prescribed a Philadelphia collar for the control of torticollis. The result of magne

Tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases, killing 1.4 million people annually and showing a rapid increase in cases resistant to multiple drugs. New antibiotics against tuberculosis are urgently needed. Here we describe the design, synthesis and structure-activity relationships of a series of benzimidazole-based compounds with activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in a replicating state, a physiologically-induced non-replicating state, or both. Compounds 49, 67, 68, 69, 70, and 72, which shared a 5-nitrofuranyl moiety, exhibited high potency and acceptable sele

PURPOSE: To report a case of endophthalmitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).
DESIGN: Descriptive case report.
METHODS: Review of patient records.
RESULTS: A 77-year-old female patient presented with postoperative endophthalmitis. Anterior segment examination revealed a severe anterior chamber and vitreous reaction. She underwent an anterior chamber tap followed by a vitrectomy, which were both positive for MTB via polymerase chain reaction. There was no radiological evidence of systemic disease. She responded well to antibiotics and antitubercular therapy for a final visual acui

Mycobacterium tuberculosis has affected humans for much of our existence. The incidence of global tuberculosis infection continues to rise, especially in concert with HIV coinfection. Many disease processes, such as diabetes, increase the likelihood of tuberculosis infection. Tuberculosis bacteria can infect any bone, joint, tendon, or bursa; however, the most common musculoskeletal site for infection includes the spine and weight-bearing joints of the hip and knee. Many patients who present with osteoarticular tuberculosis infection will have a gradual onset of pain at the site of infection.

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2010eng
Mycobacterium tuberculosis can cause significant infections in liver transplant candidates and recipients. Its nonspecific clinical features and prolonged growth time in culture make the diagnosis difficult, and treating tuberculosis (TB) remains challenging because of significant toxicities and drug-drug interactions. The diagnosis of a latent TB infection may be accomplished with tuberculin skin testing and with the newer interferon-γ release assays, although this infection may be underrecognized because of host factors. Latent TB should be treated, but the degree of liver failure and the li

Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a rare chronic skin disorder of unknown origin. Here we describe what is believed to be the first case of PN associated with tuberculosis. For the first time, culture and PCR analysis of skin biopsy confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in PN skin lesions. The pruritus and skin lesions resolved following antitubercular therapy. Our case provides further evidence in favour of a link between PN and mycobacterial infection.

In spite of the availability of effective chemotherapy and Bacille-Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, tuberculosis remains a leading infectious killer world-wide. Many factors such as, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection, drug resistance, lack of patient compliance with chemotherapy, delay in diagnosis, variable efficacy of BCG vaccine and various other factors contribute to the mortality due to tuberculosis. In spite of the new advances in understanding the biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and availability of functional genomic tools, such as microarray and proteomics, in combin

The incidence of tuberculosis was found to be 5.8% (16/274) in 274 kidney graft recipients in our centre between 1986 and 1998. The kidney recipients were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 51 recipients received isoniazid prophylaxis for 6 months. The prevalence of tuberculosis was found similar (6% vs. 8.8%, p = 0.15) between recipients with prophylaxis and no prophylaxis. Eight patients were recipients of cadaveric donor kidneys and 8 were recipients of living donor kidneys. Lungs were the most frequently affected site, as in the normal population. M. tuberculosis grew in 7 patients. In

Concurrent joint infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) and demonstration of intraarticular monosodium urate (MSU) crystals has not previously been reported. We describe a patient with chronic tophaceous gout from whose joints both TB and MSU crystals were isolated. We propose a mechanism to explain this condition.

In a retrospective study we reviewed all records of patients with newly diagnosed Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex infection during the years 1990-1994. Of the 45 patients identified, 27 (60%) had only pulmonary tuberculosis and 18 (40%) had extrapulmonary tuberculosis with (5 patients, 11%) or without (13 patients, 18%) concomitant pulmonary infection. The extrapulmonary manifestations were as follows: miliary 5, joint 3, meningeal 2, pleural 2, kidney 1, peritoneal 1, bone 1, psoas 1, lymphatic 1, and anal 1. In the 18 patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis the infection was due to Myco

Objective. The purpose of this paper is to present our experience with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections in immunocompetent children.Subjects and methods. Radiology, pathology, microbiology, and discharge records at two institutions identified the study population. Children who were immunocompromised and those with a positive skin test and no radiological or clinical evidence of active infection were excluded. Active mycobacterial infection was defined by a positive culture, biopsy, or a reactive purified protein-derivative skin test (PPD) with an appropriate clinical presentation and resp

Tuberculosis is a serious, infectious, zoonotic disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Infections are transmitted in humans and livestock via aerosols. Rv1048c is a hypothetical unknown protein in the standard strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. Rv1048c exists only in pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is highly conserved; however its function is still unclear. The recombinant Mycobacterium smegmatis strain Ms_Rv1048c, with heterologous expression of the Rv1048c gene, was constructed by using the pMV261 expression plasmid. The biological characteristics of the recombinant

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health burden, the leading cause of death among people living with HIV, and one of the main causes of death linked to antimicrobial resistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) launched in 2015 the End TB Initiative that aims to reduce TB cases and deaths by 2035. However, despite some progress, significant gaps persist in TB detection, treatment, prevention, and funding. Diagnosis is most often by sputum smear and culture and, when available, by nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), which revolutionizes TB diagnosis and monitoring, improving early detection

Pioneering studies linking symptomatic disease and cough-mediated release of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) established the infectious origin of tuberculosis (TB), simultaneously informing the pervasive notion that pathology is a prerequisite for Mtb transmission. Our prior work has challenged this assumption: by sampling TB clinic attendees, we detected equivalent release of Mtb-containing bioaerosols by confirmed TB patients and individuals not receiving a TB diagnosis, and we demonstrated a time-dependent reduction in Mtb bioaerosol positivity during six-months' follow-up, irrespective of
