Mycoplasma infection in children.

One hundred and eleven children with Mycoplasma pneumonia infection were studied. Their mean age was 6.2 +/- 3.1 years. The two commonest symptoms were cough (98%) and fever (95%). Only 23% of children had cough of greater than one week's duration. Ninety one per cent had positive chest signs. Radiological abnormalities were seen in 95% of chest x-ray. Complications included dermatological (10%), pleural effusion (5%), neurological disorder (3%), septicaemia (1%), bronchiectasis (1%). Two children with Down's Syndrome died. A rare case of Mycoplasma bronchitis with Reye's Syndrome was observed…

Mycoplasma hominis septic arthritis.

An unusual case is described of extragenital Mycoplasma hominis infection presenting as a septic arthritis of the hip joint in a young paraplegic girl. The few reported cases of M. hominis septic arthritis are summarized. Based on the current case and these reported cases, the etiology, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of this infection are discussed.

[ARDS in Mycoplasma pneumonia].

In this paper we describe a case of bilateral broncho-pneumonia due to invasion by mycoplasma pneumoniae, leading to ARDS. A high serum level of cold agglutinins, a mild haemolysis and a rash resembling that of an erythema multiforme were noted. The initial treatment was non-specific. After pathogen identification tetracycline therapy was initiated. Bacterial superinfections were treated with appropriate antibiotic schemas. The observed biphasic clinical course could be explained as an immunological phenomenon.

[Mycoplasma pneumonia in children].

Roentgenographic findings of bilateral interstitial involvement without segmental consolidation and with regional lymphadenitis, when occurs after infancy, are always suggestive of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, as this is one of the most frequent typis of pneumonia in children. M. pneumoniae can be presumed from the discrepancy between the extensive roentgenographic findings and the generally good condition of the patient. Before therapy is decided upon it is important to know what the etiology is.

Mycoplasma infections of plants.

Plants can be infected by two types of wall-less procaryotes, spiroplasmas and mycoplasma-like organisms (MLO), both located intracellularly in the phloem tissues of affected plants. Spiroplasmas have been cultured, characterized and shown to be true members of the class Mollicutes. MLO have not yet been cultured or characterized; they are thought to be mycoplasma-like on the basis of their ultrastructure as seen in situ, their sensitivity to tetracycline and resistance to penicillin. Mycoplasmas can also be found on the surface of plants. These extracellularly located organisms are members of…

Motility of Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Cell of Mycoplasma pneumoniae FH gliding on a glass surface in liquid medium were examined by microscopic observation and quantitatively by microcinematography (30 frames per min). Comparisons were made only within the individual experiments. The cells moved in an irregular pattern with numerous narrow bends and circles. They never changed their leading end. The average speed (without pauses) was relatively constant between o.2 and 0.5 mum/s. The maximum speed was about 1.5 to 2.0 mum/s. The movements were interrupted by resting periods of different lengths and frequency. Temperature, viscosit…

Mycoplasmas: Brain invaders?

Mycoplasmas of humans and animals are usually associated with respiratory, autoimmune, genital and joint diseases. Human mycoplasmas have also been known to affect the brain. Severe central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as encephalitis, have been linked to Mycoplasma pneumoniae and ureaplasma infections. Less well known is the sheep and goat pathogen, Mycoplasma agalactiae, which has been found in large quantities in the brain where it may be responsible for non-purulent encephalitis as well as ataxia in young animals. Experimental intra-mammary infections of sheep with this mycoplasma h…

The role of mycoplasmas in reproduction.

A study of the incidence of genital tract mycoplasmas in couples attending an infertility clinic and in a group of pregnant women showed that the frequency of isolation was significantly higher in the infertile group (P less than 0.001). In pregnancy, if mycoplasmas were isolated at the first prenatal visit, these organisms were harbored throughout pregnancy. Five percent of the women, however, developed the infection during pregnancy. No relationship was observed of female genital mycoplasmas with prematurity or babies small for gestational age. Treatment with doxycycline (Vibramycin, Pfizer …

Mycoplasmas in diseases of humans.

The roles of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, M. hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum in diseases of humans are currently under investigation. M. pneumoniae, which causes primary atypical pneumonia, is a well established pathogen of the respiratory tract. Complications of infection by this organism are also being recognized; they include disorders of the hematopoietic, cardiovascular, central nervous, musculoskeletal, cutaneous and gastrointestinal systems. The roles of the genital mycoplasmas M. hominis and U. urealyticum are controversial but may include infections of the genitourinary tract and in preg…

Mycoplasma gallinarum infection associated with apparent Mycoplasma meleagridis seropositivity in breeder turkey flocks.

INTRODUCTION: Monitored EU-wide, mycoplasmosis is a significant poultry disease caused by bacteria of the genus Mycoplasma, among which M. gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis and M. iowae are of major importance. Infection can lead to clinical disease and economic losses. Serological assays can give false positive results because of antigenic cross-reactivity among Mycoplasma species. Molecular diagnostics provide greater specificity and reliability. This study investigated suspected cases of Mycoplasma meleagridis infection in turkeys and assessed whether the observed serological react…

Swine Conjunctivitis Associated with a Novel Mycoplasma Species Closely Related to Mycoplasma hyorhinis.

Conjunctivitis in swine is a common finding, usually considered to be a secondary symptom of respiratory or viral systemic disease, or a result of irritation by dust or ammonia, or of local infections with Mycoplasma (M.) hyorhinis or chlamydia. In three unrelated swine farms in Germany with a high prevalence of conjunctivitis, a novel mycoplasma species, tentatively named Mycoplasma sp. 1654_15, was isolated from conjunctival swabs taken from affected pigs. Although 16S rRNA gene sequences shared highest nucleotide similarities with M. hyorhinis, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-ti…
