Invasive fungal infection may afflict people with trauma in two ways: either by entry into tissue via penetrating trauma or by haematogenous spread in critically ill people with polytrauma. Penetrating injury allows the advance of ubiquitously present fungi into the human body. Miniscule foreign material fosters the establishment and growth of fungi within the traumatically changed tissue. The seriousness of the infection depends upon the type of injury, the body area and the person's general condition. Usually, the infection is confined to the cutis and subcutis; the fascia, muscles and bones

Beside deep mycoses very well known: histoplasmosis, candidosis, cryptococcosis, there are other mycoses less frequently described. Some of them are endemic in some countries: South American blastomycosis in Brazil, coccidioidomycosis in California; some others are cosmopolitan and may affect everyone: sporotrichosis, or may affect only immunodeficient persons: mucormycosis. They do not spare Africa, we may encounter basidiobolomycosis, rhinophycomycosis, dermatophytosis, sporotrichosis and, more recently reported, rhinosporidiosis. Important therapeutic progresses have been accomplished with …

The deep mycoses are uncommon in our setting. These fungal infections occur mainly in immunosuppressed patients or in tropical climates, and include subcutaneous infections and systemic infections. The skin is always involved in the former. In the first part of this review, we describe the main subcutaneous mycoses: sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis, mycetoma, phaeohyphomycosis, hyalohyphomycosis, and lacaziosis. Early recognition and treatment is important, as these infections are frequently associated with high morbidity.

OBJECTIVES: The ever growing number of immunocompromized patients and increasing travel to areas where fungal diseases are endemic explain why in recent years mycoses have emerged as important infections in clinical practice. It is essential that pathologists and clinicians be knowledgeable about them.
RESULTS: Head and neck infections are common in disseminated mycoses. The most frequent causative yeasts or yeast-like organisms include Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum var capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Coccidioides imm…

An increase in the mycotic infections has been observed in recent decades. It is the effect of the development of industry, large migrations, living in huge aglomerations, usage of the public swimming-pools, wearing impervious clothes and shoes. Systemic diseases: diabetes, obesity, hormonal disorders, immune and food deficiency, AIDS, neoplasms and prescription drugs: antibiotics, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, cause mycoses. Mycoses belong to chronic diseases, they are difficult to treat and very often recur. A lot of antimycotic drugs are known, but the most effective are azoles an…

In the present paper we will present a general view of the main mycoses affecting domestic animals. In the dog, we show the importance of the dermatophytoses, increased by its zoonosic character and the problem of the false negatives in the traditional microbiological culture. Under the general term of systemic mycoses we include a series of conditions considered usually as aspergillosis, bat with more and more fungal species implicated as possible etiological agents. In addition, fungi, especially yeasts, are being implicated in canine otitis; in our laboratory 86 % of canine chronic otitis i…

Mycotic infections of the urogenital tract are rarely caused by primary fungal pathogens, often however, by opportunistic fungi such as Candida species. Opportunistic fungi infect the urogenital tract either by haematogenous spread from a distant site, or a break of tissue integrity, or by retrograde ascension from the perianal region, or by wound contamination. After an initial polymorphonuclear reaction macrophages may invade giving rise to a granulomatous response. Risk factors for mycotic urogenital infections are extremes of age, long lasting and broad spectrum antimicrobial therapy, diab

Onychomycosis is defined as an infection of the nail unit by fungi. Four clinical types of onychomycoses are recognized by the manner in which the nail plate is invaded. A combined therapy with elimination of the nail by surgical extraction or a chemical onycholysis, a short systemic antifungal therapy and a topical treatment until the healthy nail has grown is recommended.
