Myocardial bridges: A meta-analysis.

Myocardial bridges are anatomical entities characterized by myocardium covering segments of coronary arteries. In some patients, the presence of a myocardial bridge is benign and is only incidentally found on autopsy. In other patients, however, myocardial bridges can lead to compression of the coronary artery during systolic contraction and delayed diastolic relaxation, resulting in myocardial ischemia. This ischemia in turn can lead to myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Myocardial bridges have also been linked to an increased incidence of atherosclerosis

Morphological aspects of myocardial bridges.

Although some myocardial bridges can be asymptomatic, their presence often causes coronary disease either through direct compression of the "tunnel" segment or through stimulation and accelerated development of atherosclerosis in the segment proximally to the myocardial bridge. The studied material contained 30 human hearts received from the Department of Anatomy. The hearts were preserved 3 to 5 days in 10% formalin solution. Thereafter, the fatty tissue was removed and arterial blood vessels prepared by careful dissection with special reference to the presence of the myocardial bridges. Leng

Myocardial bridge: evaluation on MDCT.

OBJECTIVE: The correlation between myocardial bridge and atherosclerotic changes has been controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between myocardial bridge and atheromatous coronary artery disease (CAD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred consecutive subjects who underwent coronary CT angiography (CTA) were included in this study. The prevalence, length, depth, precise location, and concomitant atheromatous changes were evaluated. The group of subjects with myocardial bridge was compared with another subgroup, the control group, which included subjects without myoc

Myocardial Bridge: a clinical review.

Human coronary arteries occasionally course intramyocardially--a condition termed Myocardial Bridge. We review the anatomic and pathophysiological basis of the Myocardial Bridge and discuss clinical presentations, prognoses and the current treatment options for this interesting coronary angiographic variant.

[Multiple myocardial coronary bridges].

White woman, 31 years old, complaint pain in the left arm, at rest, and few months later she had pain in the precordial region with dyspnea, diaphoresis and dizziness without any inducing factor. One hour later, symptoms ceased spontaneously, remaining daily precordial pain. Subsidiary examinations as cineangiocoronariography revealed 100% of arterial lumen constriction in the middle portion of the descending coronary artery, during systole, as well as in the diagnoalis and marginal branches. Multiple myocardial coronary bridges has been described in necropsy, but during cinecoronarioangiograp

Pseudo-Wellens Syndrome Caused by Myocardial Bridging.

BACKGROUND: Wellens syndrome is a preinfarction electrocardiographic pattern classically associated with critical proximal left anterior descending artery stenosis. However, nonatherosclerotic conditions, including myocardial bridging, may mimic this pattern. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old man presented with intermittent chest pain and Wellens T-wave changes in the anterior leads. High-sensitivity troponin T levels were normal. Coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries with a mid left anterior descending myocardial bridge and no fixed stenosis. Beta-blocker therapy was deferred owin…

Update review on myocardial bridging: New insights.

Myocardial bridging (MB) is a common congenital abnormality that remains asymptomatic in a large proportion of patients. The peak of clinical manifestation occurs during the third and fourth decades of life. MB provokes myocardial ischemia through different mechanisms including supply-demand mismatch, endothelial dysfunction, coronary microvascular dysfunction and external mechanical compression. The association between MB and atherosclerotic disease is controversial. Recent studies established a significant association of MB with myocardial infarction and non-obstructive coronary artery disea…

Simulated coronary arterial hemodynamics of myocardial bridging.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of myocardial bridge compression on blood flow, normal stress, circumferential stress and shear stress in mural coronary artery. An original mural coronary artery simulative device has been greatly improved and its measured hemodynamic parameters have been expanded from a single stress (normal stress) to multiple stresses to more fully and accurately simulate the true hemodynamic environment under normal stress, circumferential stress and shear stress. This device was used to more fully explore the relationship between hemodynamics and mur

Myocardial Bridging: An Up-to-Date Review.

Myocardial bridging is a congenital anomaly in which a segment of a coronary artery takes a "tunneled" intramuscular course under a "bridge" of overlying myocardium. This causes vessel compression in systole, resulting in hemodynamic changes that may be associated with angina, myocardial ischemia, acute coronary syndrome, left ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmias, and even sudden cardiac death. While described on autopsy for centuries, technological advances such as coronary computed tomography angiography and intravascular ultrasound have contributed greatly to our understanding of the anatom…

Relationship between myocardial bridging and coronary arteriosclerosis.

The objective of the study was to explore the prevalence and characteristics of myocardial bridging in patients who underwent coronary angiography and to also evaluate the correlation between bridged coronary segments and atherosclerosis. For this purpose, clinical materials of 1,500 patients who had received coronary angiography were retrospectively analyzed. The location and length of the myocardial bridge were recorded as well as the extent and location of coronary artery stenosis was described. Segments proximal and distal to the bridging were evaluated for coronary arteriosclerosis as wer…
