Pathogenesis of nasal polyps: an update.

The cause of nasal polyp formation is still unknown. Genetic predisposition has been suggested, but there are scanty data to support such th … and growth factors play important roles in the persistence of mucosal inflammation associated with nasal polyps. Arachidonic acid metabolites seem to be particularly important in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps in patients with aspirin hypersensitivity rhinosinusitis/asthma syndrome.

[Epithelial cell proliferation in nasal polyps].

The mechanism stimulating the growth of nasal polyps remains unclear. The fact that nasal polyps formation is connected with increase of the epithelial surface suggests that the dysregulation of epithelial cell proliferation takes part in their pathogenesis. Furthermore, macroscopically nonsuspected nasal polyp, usually benign tissue lesion, occasionally may be misdiagnosed such as neoplasm. Only a few studies have undertaken the subject of cell proliferation in nonneoplastic respiratory epithelium. We examined 30 nasal polyps specimens by immunohistochemistry to recognize the expression of nu…

[Cytological examination of nasal polyps smears].

Cytological evaluation of smears taken from the surface of nasal polyps were presented. 30 patients were examined. In 60% of the smears the prevalence of neutrophils were noticed. The metaplasia of stratified squamous cell epithelium, lesion of cell's nuclei and blurring of cytoplasm were observed in this cases. In 23 cytograms predominance of eosinophils were found. In cytograms with predominance of eosinophils, numerous stratified columnar epithelium were present. According to cytological examination the polyps were divided to neutrophil and eosinophil type. Cytograms taken from eosinophil p…

Nasal polyps and immunoglobulin E (IgE).

Nasal polyps are usually found in nonallergic individuals. However, when nasal polyps and atopy occur together, a special interaction exists. Total and specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) are found in significantly greater concentration in nasal polyp tissue than in serum and tonsil tissue. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is also more concentrated in nasal polyps than serum. Patients with nasal polyps and allergies seem to have a greater recurrence rate after surgical polypectomy. Frequently, polyp recurrence occurs during specific pollen seasons in sensitive individuals. Upper respiratory infections are a…

Nasal polyps: medical or surgical management?

Nasal polyposis is considered to be a non-IgE-mediated inflammatory condition of the nose and sinuses, often associated with chronic non-all … atment with systemic corticosteroids is an alternative method of inducing remission and controlling nasal polyps. However, in most patients with nasal polyps, treatment consists of both medical and surgical management.

Mast cell degranulation in nasal polyps.

Light- and electronmicroscopic observations as well as immunohistochemical studies were made on nasal polyps from 15 patients. The patients included 2 cases of aspirin intolerance (AA), 6 cases of allergic rhinitis (NA) and 7 cases of chronic rhinitis (CS) with negative skin tests against major inhalant allergens. Nasal polyps commonly contained many inflammatory cells such as neutrophils (PMN), eosinophils, plasma cells, mast cells, lymphocytes and macrophages. Two morphological features were conspicuous in our study: 1) PMN migration and attachment to the basal lamina, 2) accelerated degranu…

Nasal polyps and the severity of asthma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Upper airway pathologies often accompany asthma. Because this represents a single airway, the diagnosis, follow up and treatment of both upper and lower respiratory diseases is essential. Samter Syndrome (SS) is known to be associated with more severe asthma. The presence of nasal polyps (NPs) is also associated with asthma. However, the incidence of NPs in asthma and the effect of NPs on asthma severity are not well documented. METHODS: Three hundred and forty-two asthma patients were evaluated by endoscopic nasal examination, pulmonary function test, skin prick te…

[Metaplastic ossification in nasal polyp].

Metaplasia is the production by cells of a kind of tissue other than that corresponding to their lineage, ie it represents the conversion of one tissue into another. Bony metaplasia has frequently been described in polyps of the gastrointestinal tract. In nasal polyposis it is an extremely uncommon finding. We describe the case of a 42 year-old female presenting nasal obstruction due to a unilateral nasal tumour. She was operated on by means of endoscopic sinonasal surgery and the definitive diagnosis was nasal polyposis with areas of bony metaplasia.

[The role of chemokines in nasal polyps].

Nasal polyposis is an inflammatory condition of the nose and the sinuses characterised by a marked infiltration of eosinophils in addition t … inates. The increased levels of eosinophil-stimulating chemokines, such as Eotaxin and Eotaxin-2 in nasal polyps suggest that they may be important regulators of eosinophil recruitment in this inflammatory disease.

Amphotericin B nasal spray has no effect on nasal polyps.

Nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis are the products of an inflammatory process. Recently, fungal involvement has been thought to stimulate the development of polyps, and administration of antifungal agents was therefore considered a potential treatment. Several studies have been published indicating amphotericin B as an effective treatment for nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis. The aim of our investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of intranasal applied amphotericin B on the growth of nasal polyps in a three-month, prospective, open trial. Our results show that nasal amphotericin…

Nasal Polyp - An Incidental Paraganglioma.

The nose is an uncommon site for head and neck paraganglioma. The diagnosis is seldom established pre-operatively; its rarity, infrequent functionality and often benign biologic outcome underlie this fact. We present one such case in a 60-year-old man who presented with right nasal obstruction and episodic epistaxis. Rhinoscopy revealed a fleshy polypoid mass arising from the anterior cartilaginous nasal septum. Imaging studies excluded extra-nasal extension. The tumor was highly vascular showing numerous variable sized, mostly thin walled branching blood vessels akin to stag-horn shape simula

Inflammatory Septal Nasal Polyp.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal polyps are benign prolapsed mucosal lesions which commonly arise from the paranasal sinuses and lateral walls of the nose especially the contact areas of osteomeatal complex. Though nasal polyps arising from the nasal septum have been reported, those arising from its anterior part are extremely rare and present a diagnostic dilemma. Aetiology is multifactorial and is mainly a result of the inflammatory response of the lining mucosa. CASE REPORT: The case of a 28-year-old male, with a history of progressively increasing nasal complaints since 4 months and with a nasal mass …

A rhinolith surrounded by a nasal polyp.

Rhinoliths are uncommon mineralized nasal mass in children and adolescents. We reported a case of unilateral rhinolith that presented as a nasal polyp. A 29-year-old woman who had right-sided nasal purulent discharge, nasal obstruction, intermittent epistaxis, and posterior nasal drip for 6 months was admitted to our department. Nasal examination revealed a nasal mass between the inferior turbinate and the nasal septum, presenting as a nasal polyp or a nasal tumor. Paranasal sinus computed tomographic scan confirmed a calcified mass in soft tissue. We removed the rhinolith and the soft tissue

Ameloblastoma: a rare nasal polyp.

Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic neoplasm of enamel organ type tissue which does not undergo transformation to the point of enamel formation. We present the second case in the English literature of maxillary ameloblastoma that presented with nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea, and the first to be excised using a combined maxillotomy and endoscopic ethmoidectomy. The patient had no previous dental history. The unusual presenting symptoms, as well as the highly destructive nature of these lesions when arising in the maxilla, make them worthy of consideration in the differential diagnosis of nasal

[Nasal polyps is not a homogenous pathology].

UNLABELLED: Nasal polyposis is still a disease of unknown etiology. Looking at its clinical course it seems to be not homogenous pathology. Inflammation of the mucosa, mainly eosinophilic is probably the most important factor, which leads to the development of nasal polyps. THE AIM OF STUDY: To analyze and compare the history data and eosinophilic inflammation parameters in patients with nasal polyps. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 67 patients with nasal polyposis were included into the study. They were divided into three groups: PP-primary nasal polyps (n = 33-49.2%); A-polyps and bronchial asthma w…
