Imaging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a unique disease that shows clinical behaviour, epidemiology and histopathology that is different from that of other squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now the preferred imaging modality in the assessment and staging of NPC, especially in relation to its superior soft tissue contrast, ability to demonstrate perineural tumour spread, parapharyngeal space, bone marrow involvement and its ability to show the involvement of adjacent structures, such as the adjacent paranasal sinuses and intracranial extension. An unders

Nasopharyngeal polyps in cats.

Nasopharyngeal polyps are non-neoplastic, inflammatory growths that arise from the middle ear or the eustachian tube and extend into the pharynx. The exact etiology of nasopharyngeal polyps is unclear; proposed etiologies include a response to chronic upper respiratory tract infection, chronic otitis media, ascending infection from the nasopharynx, or a congenital origin. Clinical signs usually relate to obstruction of the nasopharynx, with Horner's syndrome and head tilt being consistent with otitis media and otitis interna, respectively. Diagnostic tools include digital or visual examination

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare yet potentially destructive vascular tumor that typically affects adolescent males. While the etiology of these tumors remains unknown, great advances have been made in their diagnosis and treatment. When juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is diagnosed at an early stage, the prognosis is generally very good, as patients can be treated with a combination of pre-operative embolization and surgical resection. Advanced juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is much more difficult to treat, since orbital and intracranial involvement are common in the n

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma with dermatomyositis.

From 1976 to 1986, ten out of 1154 consecutive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were found to have dermatomyositis (DM). Their clinical features and treatment results were analyzed. The skin manifestation was typical of DM and myopathy occurred in seven patients. All the tumor on presentation were early stage and locoregional control after radiotherapy was satisfactory. All but one patient had DM prior to diagnosis of NPC. The prognosis of NPC was not affected by DM with survival being comparable to contemporary controls. The complication of radiotherapy were unusually severe. Chronic r

Nasopharyngeal cancer in Nigeria.

Nasopharyngeal cancer, once considered to be non-existent or rare in the African, is now accepted as being far from uncommon. Experience of this disease in Nigeria over a 15-year period is presented. As elsewhere there is a preponderance of males over females, but the peak age of incidence is lower than that observed in the Western world. Cancers of epithelial origin predominate. The commonest early sign of the disease is upper deep cervical adenopathy usually, but not always, with nasal and/or aural symptoms. Cranial nerve involvement has been observed early in about 30% of cases and occasion

Nasopharyngeal masses in adults.

Nasopharyngeal masses in adults present a perplexing problem because of the concern for malignancy. A retrospective review of the records, radiographs and biopsy histology of 57 patients presenting in one year with nasopharyngeal masses at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary suggests that persistent pain, epistaxis, trismus, or cervical mass are uncommon in patients with benign histology and should alert the clinician to the probability of malignancy. A high index of suspicion on the part of the clinician is essential for the successful recognition of early lesions. The roles of convention

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

A case of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a 14 year old boy is presented on account of the endocrinological investigation performed before, during, and after treatment with 15 mg/day diethylstilbestrol for more than one month. Previously, the tumor had recurred in spite of extensive surgery. Secondary sexual characteristics were normal and the development of puberty at the age of 12-13 years seemed not to have influenced tumor growth. In contrast to certain previous reports, normal functions were found regarding the pituitary, the gonads, the adrenal cortex, and the thyroid gland in ou

Reconstruction of nasopharyngeal defect with submental flap during surgery for nasopharyngeal malignant tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and effect of a pedicled submental flap in postoperative defect repair of nasopharyngeal malignant tumors. METHODS: Eight cases (six women, two men; age, 29-63 years) of postoperative defects after resection of malignant nasopharyngeal tumors with a lesion stage of (r) T1-3N0-2M0 were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative enhanced thin-slice computed tomography of the neck was performed to predict the submental flap reflux vein. The submental flap was prefabricated during the operation, and the nasopharyngeal mass was removed through the parapharynge

A comparison of nasopharyngeal endoscopy and lateral cephalometric radiography in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal airway obstruction.

Two auxiliary methods of diagnosing nasopharyngeal airway obstruction were compared. Cephalometric radiography and nasopharyngeal videoendoscopy were evaluated for efficacy in terms of reproducibility and validity. Thirty orthodontic patients (7 to 12 years of age) seeking otorhinolaryngologic treatment for mouth breathing, or mouth and nose breathing, had nasopharyngeal endoscopy and radiographic examinations performed on the same day. Two otorhinolaryngologists analyzed the results. Nasopharyngeal endoscopy was more reliable in identifying all the obstructive nasopharyngeal processes. Endosc

Position-Guided Nasopharyngeal Irrigation for Post-Radiotherapy Ulcer Care in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

To describe and standardize a position-guided nasopharyngeal irrigation protocol for post-radiotherapy nasopharyngeal ulceration (RINU) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a prospective comparative clinical setting was used among 184 patients diagnosed with RINU between January and March 2025. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either routine manual irrigation (n = 92) or irrigation using an improved position-guided device (n = 92). The protocol incorporates an anatomically guided, double-lumen catheter with a direction-controlled tip, an adjustable outer sheath, and a

Microbial etiology, susceptibility profile of postradiation nasopharyngeal necrosis patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Postradiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) is a notorious complication after radiotherapy that affects prognosis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). It is important for clinical doctors to realize this problem in order to cope with this severe clinical situation. The aim of our study was to assess the bacteriology of PRNN and to demonstrate the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern that should guide the clinicians towards more appropriate antibiotic use. METHODS: Sixty-nine NPC patients with PRNN in our department between March 2013 and December 2017 were retrospectiv

Radiation Therapy-Induced Changes of the Nasopharyngeal Commensal Microbiome in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients.

PURPOSE: The human commensal microbiome has been suggested to be involved in the regulation of response to anticancer therapies. However, little is known regarding changes in commensal microbes in patients with cancer during radiation therapy. We conducted a prospective, longitudinal proof-of-concept cohort study with patients with newly diagnosed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who underwent radiation therapy-based treatment. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected before radiation therapy, twice per week during radiation therapy, and after radiation therapy. The nasopharyn
