How to radiologically identify a spontaneous regression of sporadic vestibular schwannoma?

BACKGROUND: The natural history of sporadic vestibular schwannoma is unpredictable, with tumors growing, non-growing and even showing spontaneous regression in some rare cases. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aims to describe the radiologic signs characterizing and identifying the shrinking vestibular schwannoma. METHODS: Involution was considered to have occurred if tumor size had decreased by 2 mm or more on its largest diameter. All magnetic resonance imaging scans were reviewed for tumor size, internal auditory meatus size, and tumor characteristics. Volumetric measurements were perf

Distinct spontaneous shrinkage of a sporadic vestibular schwannoma.

We present a case with outspoken spontaneous vestibular schwannoma shrinkage and review the related literature. The patient was initially diagnosed with a left-sided, intrameatal vestibular schwannoma, which subsequently grew into the cerebello-pontine angle (CPA), followed by total shrinkage of the CPA component without any intervention over a 12-year observation period. The literature on spontaneous tumor shrinkage was retrieved by searching the subject terms "vestibular schwannoma, conservative management" in PubMed/MEDLINE database, without a time limit. Of the published data, the articles

Kaposi's sarcoma: a reversible hyperplasia.

Kaposi's sarcoma has many unusual features: for example, the pronounced male preponderance; its appearance in "crops" rather than as primary tumour with metastases; a substantial rate of spontaneous remission; the predictability of involved sites; the lack of aneuploidy; and the strong association with immunodeficiency. These features and other evidence suggest that it is not a malignant neoplasm but a benign, potentially controllable and reversible hyperplasia.

Spontaneous Regression of Diffuse Periosteal Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy in the Tibia, With 13-Year Follow-up.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare entity primarily affecting the craniofacial bones during the first year of life, with only 5 reported cases involving peripheral long bones. We herein present a case of MNTI in the tibia of an infant, with a somewhat atypical presentation, and a noteworthy clinical course characterized by progressive spontaneous resolution without therapy, thus sparing the child the trauma of amputation. There is no evidence of active residual or recurrent disease with 13-year follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, essentially all reported cases of

Evidence for frequent regression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia-grade 2.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the fraction of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 (CIN 2) that might regress if untreated using data from the Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance/Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions Triage Study (ALTS). METHODS: We compared the cumulative occurrence of CIN 2 (n=397) and CIN 3 or more severe (n=542) diagnosed by the Pathology Quality Control Group in three trial arms-immediate colposcopy, human papillomavirus (HPV) triage, and conservative management-over the 2-year duration of the ALTS trial. A nonparametric test of trend was used to test for

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 lesions can regress.

Up to 30% of cervical intraepithelial grades 2-3 (CIN2-3) lesions regress, but some believe that "regression" is due to "curative" punch biopsies. If this is true, CIN2-3 in the resection margins of the biopsies would be associated with more frequent "persistent" CIN2-3. If, however, immunology-related regression exists, regression would increase with increasing biopsy-cone interval. In 61 punch biopsies diagnosed as CIN3 at careful review by two independent gynaecological pathologists, CIN3 in the resection margins and duration of the biopsy-cone interval was evaluated in relation to CIN2-3-o

[Breast cancer diagnosed in the pre-clinical stage with the phenomena of histological regression (author's transl)].

The discovery of carcinomatous cells in a discharge from a breast, without any other clinical, mammographic or thermographic sign, allowed the removal of a carcinoma in its pre-clinical stage. The histological study in a series of cuts showed a carcinoma that was still intraductal and which showed signs of cellular regression accompanied by marked peri-canalicular sclerosis associated with inflammatory infiltration. This observation allows commentaries to be made concerning the immunological process that goes with carcinoma in its intra-epithelial stage and permits the possibility of predictin

Fever as a factor contributing to long-term survival in a patient with metastatic melanoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is a cancer that arises from pigment cells in the skin called melanocytes. The long-term survival of a patient with advanced melanoma is rare. CASE: We present a unique case of a female patient who has suffered from malignant melanoma for more than 13 years. The disease progressed quickly, and 19 months after diagnosis, the patient was classified as having stage IV melanoma. After several years, the patient had several episodes of fever that were not deliberately treated with medication. After each episode of fever, the patient observed the disappearance of tumo

[Spontaneous regression of primary intracranial germinoma: a case report].

Here we report a case in which an intracranial germinoma displayed spontaneous regression. An 11-year-old boy presented with polyuria and headache. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed tumors in the suprasellar and pineal regions, and obstructive hydrocephalus. As repeat MRI demonstrated shrinkage of these tumors, resection was deferred. The patient was discharged and followed up with serial MRI. The tumor continued to regress for three weeks; however, the patient was readmitted due to tumor regrowth. We performed endoscopic biopsy, and histopathologic diagnos

[Spontaneous regression of lung cancer in an elderly patient: a case report].

An 82 year-old male was referred to us because of a nodule in the upper lobe of his right lung, which was incidentally found by computed tomography (CT) carried out in the course of treating pneumonia. The nodule was identified as non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the lung by bronchoscopy. A close investigation revealed the tumor to be cT1bN3M1b, clinical Stage IV. Although we only adopted a wait-and-see approach because of his age and his suspected myelodysplastic syndrome, the nodule had regressed on CT images after a year. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography showed app

Spontaneous Involution of Congenital Melanocytic Nevus With Halo Phenomenon.

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a neural crest-derived hamartoma, which appear at or soon after birth. CMN has a dynamic course and may show variable changes over time, including spontaneous involution. Spontaneous involution of CMN is a rare phenomenon and is often reported in association with halo phenomenon or vitiligo. The mechanism of halo phenomenon is yet to be investigated but is suggested to be a destruction of melanocytes by immune responses of cytotoxic T cells or IgM autoantibodies. Here, the authors report an interesting case of spontaneously regressed medium-sized CMN with

Multicentric juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma occurring primarily in the trigone of the lateral ventricle.

The authors report a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (JPA) in the trigone of an 11-year-old girl, apparently with disseminated lesions that disappeared spontaneously after the removal of primary lesion. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance images (MRIs) showed features suggestive of the development of multicentric spread of the tumor at the initial diagnosis. Histologically the primary tumor showed the typical features of a JPA. Serial postoperative MRIs demonstrated that everything except a remnant of the primary tumor seemed to regress spontaneously without any adjuvant therapy. The site of
