The Prevalence of Epstein-Barr Virus in Plasma Cell Neoplasms is Higher in HIV-Positive Individuals.

AIMS: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is causally associated with many hematolymphoid malignancies. This laboratory-based study aimed to establish the prevalence of EBV in plasma cell neoplasms in a large South African cohort and to determine whether there is any correlation between EBV-positivity and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status in patients with plasma cell neoplasms, including plasma cell myeloma and plasmacytoma (solitary plasmacytoma of bone and extraosseous plasmacytoma). METHODS: This single-institution retrospective study included all patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of

Ultrasonography in tumors arising from the spine and bony pelvis.

Gray scale ultrasonography is a useful tool in evaluating pelvic and abdominal soft tissue masses that may be associated with bone neoplasms. Four patients are described: two with giant cell tumors, one with Ewing's sarcoma, and one with a sacrococcygeal teratoma. Ultrasound is especially helpful in assessing the extent of disease, treatment planning, and in following the results of therapy.

Non-Hepatosplenic Extramedullary Hematopoiesis Masquerading as Metastatic Malignant Melanoma.

Non-hepatosplenic extramedullary hematopoiesis (NHS-EMH), the formation of blood cellular elements outside the medulla of the bone marrow and outside the liver and spleen, has been noted among patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms and other serious hematological diseases. However, NHS-EMH is rarely identified among individuals without concurrent hematological disease. Since the radiologic features of NHS-EMH are nonspecific, lesions may be mistaken for metastatic disease when observed in patients with known solid tumors. We report an unusual case of a patient with a simultaneous presentat

Unveiling Multiple Myeloma: Actively Bleeding Extramedullary Gastric Myelomas Lead to Diagnosis.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a disease of plasma cell replication, leading to a disruption of hematopoiesis, which commonly presents clinically with anemia and fatigue. Extramedullary myelomas are plasma cell collections in bone or soft tissue associated with MM and most often occur later in the disease process. We present a case of a patient with symptomatic anemia with actively bleeding gastric nodules, which were later found to be extramedullary gastric myelomas when pathology demonstrated kappa-restricted plasma cell neoplasms. To confirm the overall diagnosis, a bone marrow biopsy verified th

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst presenting as an enlarging neck mass: Case report and review of the head and neck literature.

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cysts (STABCs) are rare neoplasms histopathologically identical to aneurysmal bone cysts. These benign lesions are characterized by thin, peripheral ossification and no skeletal continuity. STABC may be difficult to distinguish from myositis ossificans (MO) and malignant entities from imaging and fine needle aspiration, due to rarity and overlapping features. We present a case of a STABC occurring in the paraspinal cervical muscles. The imaging, histopathology, molecular analysis, and treatment are discussed. Four other published cases of STABC of the head and neck

IL-6 transgenic mouse model for extraosseous plasmacytoma.

Plasma cell neoplasms in humans comprise plasma cell myeloma, otherwise known as multiple myeloma, Ig deposition and heavy chain diseases, and plasmacytoma (PCT). A subset of PCT, designated extramedullary PCT, is distinguished from multiple myeloma and solitary PCT of bone by its distribution among various tissue sites but not the bone marrow. Extramedullary (extraosseus) PCT are rare spontaneous neoplasms of mice but are readily induced in a susceptible strain, BALB/c, by treatment with pristane. The tumors develop in peritoneal granulomas and are characterized by Myc-activating T(12;15) chr

New Insights into Clonal Mast Cell Disorders Including Mastocytosis.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that involve the clonal expansion of mast cells into one or more organ systems, which typically involves the skin and hematopoietic systems. Systemic mastocytosis consists of a multifocal infiltration of mast cells into various noncutaneous tissue sites, especially the bone marrow. Diagnosis requires tissue confirmation, and algorithms have been developed to assist clinicians in this process. The current classification system focuses on delineating prognostic categories. Therapeutic approaches include symptomatic management, prevention of comp

Secondary Extramedullary Myeloma of the Gallbladder: A Case Report.

Extramedullary myeloma (EMM) is an infrequent but well-established manifestation of multiple myeloma (MM), defined as a soft tissue plasma cell neoplasm without bone marrow involvement. Gallbladder involvement in EMM, however, is a very rare occurrence, with only 8 cases found in the English medical literature. Here, we present a case of an older adult male with a gallbladder mass in the presence of increasing serum kappa light chains after a normal bone marrow biopsy confirmed the complete remission of a previous MM diagnosis. Histopathologic evaluation of a biopsied sample confirmed the mass

Atypical chronic myeloid leukemia as defined in the WHO classification is a JAK2 V617F negative neoplasm.

Atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) as defined by the WHO classification is a rare hematopoietic stem cell disorder, which shows both myeloproliferative as well as myelodysplastic features. Because of the presence of neutrophilic leukocytosis, aCML may resemble chronic myelogenous leukemia. However, in contrast with the latter, aCML lacks a Philadelphia chromosome or the BCR/ABL fusion gene. The molecular pathogenesis of aCML and its relationship to other myeloproliferative neoplasms is unknown. To clarify these points, the presence of JAK2 V617F was examined by a retrospective analysis o

[Benign metastasizing uterine leiomyoma with lung metastasis: problems of diagnosis and treatment].

Uterine leiomyoma (LM) is a smooth muscle tumor occurring in 30% of women of reproductive age. This neoplasm is the most common benign tumor of female genitals. Uterus is the most frequent localization of tumor. However, LM can be detected in external genitalia, ovaries, bladder and urethra. Despite the benign nature, LM is characterized by metastasizing as one of the main properties of malignant neoplasms. For the first time, Steiner described this case in 1939. The author found similar histological structure of pulmonary and uterine neoplasms. LM metastases in bone tissue, skin, mediastinum,

Neoplastic diseases of the spermatic cord: an overview of pathological features, evaluation, and management.

Extracellular tumors found with the spermatic cord, known as neoplasms, are usually identified to be benign. However, the accurate and timely diagnosis of spermatic cord masses is highly crucial, especially when most results are often overlooked or unclear. In this review, we discuss the anatomy and embryology of the spermatic cord. Upon rooting these fundamental concepts, we discuss an array of benign and malignant neoplastic tumors, including their origin, pathological features, clinical evaluation and management, as well as other case-specific characteristics of unique presentation. Many of

What's new in adipocytic neoplasia?

Adipocytic tumors are frequently encountered in routine practice, and while the vast majority represent commonly encountered tumor types (e.g., benign lipoma), the heterogeneity and rarity of other adipocytic neoplasms can pose diagnostic challenges. Atypical and malignant adipocytic tumors account for approximately 20% of all sarcomas. The 2013 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of soft tissue and bone tumors recognizes four major liposarcoma subtypes, characterized by distinct clinical behavior, distinctive morphologies, as well as unique genetic findings: atypical lipomatous tum

Digital Lesions in Dogs: A Statistical Breed Analysis of 2912 Cases.

Breed predispositions to canine digital neoplasms are well known. However, there is currently no statistical analysis identifying the least affected breeds. To this end, 2912 canine amputated digits submitted from 2014-2019 to the Laboklin GmbH & Co. KG for routine diagnostics were statistically analyzed. The study population consisted of 155 different breeds (most common: 634 Mongrels, 411 Schnauzers, 197 Labrador Retrievers, 93 Golden Retrievers). Non-neoplastic processes were present in 1246 (43%), tumor-like lesions in 138 (5%), and neoplasms in 1528 cases (52%). Benign tumors (n = 335) we

Tumour and tumour-like lesions of the patella--a multicentre experience.

Fifty-nine cases of lesions presenting in the patella were identified after review of the databases of four European bone tumour registries. Of the 59 cases, 46% were non neoplastic, 39% were benign and 15% were malignant. The commonest benign neoplasm was giant cell tumour (GCT) (11 cases). Younger patients were more likely to have a benign neoplasm. Lesions in patients less than 40 years of age included giant cell tumour, chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), osteomyelitis, osteoid osteoma and solitary bone cyst. In patients older than 40 years, the following were common lesions: intr

Epithelioid osteosarcoma of the scapula.

Epithelioid and epithelial neoplasms of bone are rare. They include different epithelioid variants of vascular lesions, osteoblastoma, chondroblastoma and most importantly metastatic carcinoma. Up to now, only few cases of epithelioid osteosarcoma were described. In this case the authors report a 53-year-old patient presented with a medical history of chronic shoulder pain for 3 years. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI and computed tomography (CT) showed a destructive, partially calcified osseous lesion of the scapula with expansion into the surrounding soft tissue, suggestive of a primary bone

Intra-osseous ganglion. Report of four cases and review of the literature.

Intraosseous ganglia are histologically identical to their soft tissue counterparts. Most commonly seen adjacent to the hip, ankles, knee, or wrist, they are often mistaken for other neoplasms occurring in the epiphysis. We discuss the characteristic clinical, radiological, and pathologic features of four cases of intraosseous ganglia. Intraosseous ganglia should be included in the differential diagnosis of well-demarcated lucent epiphyseal lesions of bone.

Salivary duct carcinoma with heterotopic ossification in the parotid gland: A case report.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is one of the most aggressive salivary gland carcinomas. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature bone in non-skeletal tissues. HO can occur in a number of neoplastic lesions. However, its occurrence is markedly rare in salivary gland neoplasms and to the best of our knowledge, SDC with HO has not yet been reported. Therefore, the present report describes the first reported case of SDC with HO in the parotid gland and reviews the clinicopathological features of salivary gland neoplasms with HO. A 38-year-old Japanese male presented with a mass in t

Case report 592: Bone graft donor site of tibia.

A case is presented in which a donor site for a bone graft from the proximal end of the tibia caused diagnostic difficulty. The bony defect produced in such procedures is easily confused with a variety of neoplastic and neoplasm-like lesions. The clinical history, use of immediate postoperative films, and knowledge concerning the common sites for obtaining bone graft donor tissue are critical in offering the correct diagnosis.

The first case of myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma affecting the maxillary bone.

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS) is rare and malignant soft-tissue neoplasms that typically present in the extremities. In the literature, MIFS has been reported in the groin, back, neck, nose, and temporal regions in addition to the extremities. We report a case of MIFS presenting with the complaints of nasal bleeding, purulent nasal discharge, and swelling on the right side of his face. Polypoid tissues protruded from the middle meatus were observed and initial diagnosis was inverted papilloma. The painless tumor was initially mistaken for low-grade myxofibrosarcoma in biopsy. Ma

Malignant Lymphoma Mimicking an Infection After Shoulder Surgery.

Involvement of the musculoskeletal system by primary or metastatic malignant neoplasms mimicking common orthopaedic conditions is well recognized. The diagnosis may be delayed in the absence of radiographic abnormalities. Twenty-five percent of lymphoma cases have skeletal involvement, and they can affect both bone and soft tissue. Lymphoma is sometimes discovered by means of routine histologic examination of tissue collected at the time of orthopaedic surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of lymphoma occurring at the site of prior shoulder surgery and mimicking an in
