The case of a 34-year-old white male who died suddenly and unexpectedly of a thrombosed coronary artery aneurysm is presented. Coronary artery aneurysms have a prevalence of approximately 2%; over half of these are caused by atherosclerosis with the remainder due to syphilis, infections, trauma, congenital malformations, vasculitis, neoplasms, and connective tissue disorders (Ehlers-Danlos and Marfan's syndromes). Replacement of the media by atherosclerotic debris is the cause of atherosclerotic aneurysms. Complications include rupture and thrombosis. Sudden death has been reported in eight ot

A chondroma is a common benign cartilaginous tumor. However, a primary soft tissue chondroma of the posterior mediastinum is very rare. We herein report a case involving a 51-year-old man with a posterior mediastinal mass. The mass was dissected by thoracoscopy through the eighth intercostal space. Pathological examination led to a definitive diagnosis of a primary mediastinal chondroma with no criteria of malignancy. Preoperative diagnosis of a posterior mediastinal soft tissue chondroma is not easy because of its rarity and lack of typical features other than calcification. When a posterior

Mouth ulcers are one of the most common oral complaints. The term ulcer is used usually where there is damage to both epithelium and lamina propria, and a crater, sometimes made more obvious clinically by swelling caused by oedema or proliferation in the surrounding tissue. The term erosion is usually used where the damage is somewhat more superficial. Most ulcers/erosions are due to local causes such as trauma or burns. Some are caused by aphthae or malignant neoplasms, and a few have aetiology in obvious systemic disease. Ulcers of local cause, drugs, aphthous ulcers, Behcet's syndrome and m

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain differentiation, characterized morphologically by abundant myxoid stroma, a multinodular growth pattern, and uniform cells arranged in strands, clusters, and reticular networks. It usually occurs in adults in the fifth decade, most often in the deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities. The molecular hallmark of this tumor, present in over 90% of cases, is the fusion of NR4A3 with EWSR1 at 22q12.2 or TAF15 at 17q12. Many other tumors with uniform tumor cells embedded in a myxoid matrix can mimic Extraskeletal m

Fibrous tissues and tumors may appear hyperdense relative to muscles and solid viscera on CT both before and after IV contrast injection. In addition, fibrous tissues generally have a homogeneously hypoechoic sonographic appearance. The diagnostic value of these criteria is illustrated in a group of 21 fibrous tissue abnormalities that includes retroperitoneal, mediastinal, and perigraft fibrosis, sclerosing pseudotumor of the orbit, generalized fibromatosis, desmoids, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and normal tendons and ligaments. It is concluded that while hyperdensity on CT and echopenia

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors in the abdomen and occur in Germany with an incidence of 10 to 15 cases per million inhabitants. Clear identification and characterization are of major importance for the prognosis and therapy of patients. Similarly, they have to be differentiated from other mesenchymal neoplasias such as leiomyomatous, neurogenic, adipocytic, and fibroblastic tumors. Additionally, the number of translocation positive neoplasias is increasing, requiring the use of adequate molecular assays. The aim of this paper is to give practical advice

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm which could be favored by an hereditary predisposing factor. So far, malignant mesothelioma have never been described in patients with hereditary diseases of the connective tissue. Here, we report some cases of mesothelioma affecting subjects who were not exposed to inhalation of asbestos. One of these subjects was affected by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, whereas in two brothers, mesothelioma was associated with Marfan's syndrome. The observation of the same histologic subtype of mesothelioma in two brothers and the coexistence of two pathologic conditions

Primary serosal neoplasms demonstrate a wide spectrum of growth patterns and biologic aggressiveness. The adenomatoid tumor is uniformly benign, whereas the diffuse malignant mesothelioma pursues a downhill clinical course, rapidly leading to fatality. The cystic peritoneal mesothelioma occupies an intermediate position characterized by persistent and/or recurrent disease but without progression to death. The distinction of an epithelial mesothelioma from metastatic adenocarcinoma remains a challenging problem. In the vast majority of cases, this can be accomplished by combining routine histoc

Many malignant tumours other than squamous cell carcinoma may present in the oral cavity. Melanomas of the oral cavity are usually pigmented, aggressive tumours associated with a poor prognosis. Neoplasms of the minor salivary glands have a greater tendency to be malignant than those of the major glands, and some exhibit a predilection for occurring in the mouth. Many types of connective tissue malignant tumours (sarcomas) may arise in the mouth, including soft-tissue cancers and lesions of hematologic cells such as lymphoma, whereas osteosarcoma is the most common malignancy of the hard tissu

Myxofibrosarcoma is a common connective tissue neoplasm of malignant fibrocytes in a myxoid matrix favoring the extremities. Like many other tumors of connective tissue, soft tissue sarcoma exhibits high recurrence rates but is rarely known to metastasize. We present a patient with myxofibrosarcoma of the hand with metastases to the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum. The mediastinal metastasis presented clinically with gastrointestinal symptoms due to compression of the gastroesophageal junction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of metastatic myxofibrosarcoma of the hand and also the fi

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is rare paraneoplastic syndrome of hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, caused by phosphaturic factors secreted by small mesenchymal origin tumors with distinct pathological features, called 'phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors'. FGF23 is the most well-characterized of the phosphaturic factors. Tumors are often small and located anywhere in the body from head to toe, which makes the localisation challenging. Functional imaging by somatostatin receptor-based PET imaging is the first line investigation, which should be followed with CT or MRI based anatomical imaging. Once

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are neoplasms associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia. Patients typically present with pathologic fractures in the setting of chronic hypophosphatemic hyperphosphaturic osteomalacia, as well as gradual muscle weakness, bone pain, and difficulty walking. Because of their rarity and nonspecific symptomatology, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often go undiagnosed for years. Even when discovered on imaging, the tumors can be diagnostically challenging for radiologists. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often tend to be small and can be located nearly anywher

Abnormal collagen fibrils were identified by transmission electron microscopy in 22 human tumors of differing histogenesis. They were found in a review of 1400 electron microscopy cases. Abnormal collagen fibrils, described by others as amianthoid fibers, composite collagen, collagen flowers and intrafibrillar collagen dysplasia, have been found only rarely in human tumors but commonly in certain connective tissue diseases such as pseudoxanthoma elasticum, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, Marfan's syndrome, osteoarthritic cartilage, and emphysematous lung among others. Abnormalities in the cases descr

The urological examination includes the inspection of the external male genitals. Harmless normal variants, such as heterotopic sebaceous glands and pearly penile papules must be differentiated from malignant and infectious manifestations. Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus is a frequent connective tissue disease that can lead to functional impairments and an associated high level of suffering for those affected. Both conservative and invasive treatment options are available. Sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis, are gaining increasing importance in routine clinical and daily practice d

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are a group of rare connective tissue diseases with a well-documented association with malignancy. The mechanisms underlying the increased risk of neoplasms in the course of myositis are not fully understood. The Pubmed database has been thoroughly screened for articles concerning cancer-associated myositis (CAM). The article summarizes the current state of knowledge on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of CAM. Furthermore, it analyses potential risk and protective factors for developing CAM, with particular emphasis on the association with distinct serologic
