Intraventricular Astroblastoma in an Infant: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Astroblastomas are rare intracranial tumours of uncertain origin and are commonly present in the supratentorial compartment. Astroblastomas often affect children and young adults. Their occurrence in an intraventricular location, in an infant, is extremely uncommon. We describe a 1-year-old boy who presented with features of raised intracranial pressure. An MRI scan revealed an intralateral ventricular tumour. Complete excision was performed. Its histopathological examination revealed features consistent with astroblastoma. A follow-up MRI scan after 9 months did not show any residual tumour,

Utility of Gadolinium Use in the Imaging Follow-Up of Nonenhancing Primary Brain Neoplasms in Children.

Background and purpose Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) have been administered clinically since 1988. They are remarkably well tolerated by children and result in dose-dependent tissue deposition, even in patients with normal renal function. No adverse effects of gadolinium deposition in patients with normal renal function have been established. Given the uncertain effects of gadolinium deposition, we sought to analyze gadolinium use in the imaging follow-up of nonenhancing primary brain neoplasms in children. Materials and methods This retrospective, institutional review board-approve

Evaluation of intracranial lesions with inversion recovery half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo MR: initial observations.

PURPOSE: To determine the value of inversion recovery half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo (IR-HASTE) MR sequences in the characterization of a variety of intracranial lesions, with the focus on differentiating between epidermoids and nonneoplastic cystic lesions. METHODS: We used a 1.5-T MR unit to study five epidermoids, seven arachnoid cysts, seven other nonneoplastic cysts (three neuroepithelial cysts, two interhemispheric cysts, and two Rathke's cleft cysts), and eight solid neoplasms (three meningiomas, two astrocytomas, one subependymoma, one cavernoma, and one metastatic tumor) us

Cerebral astroblastoma with oligodendroglial-like cells: A case report.

RATIONALE: Astroblastoma is a rare tumor of the central nervous system with uncertain biological behavior and origin. Its histopathological features have been well established, while, to our knowledge, astroblastoma with oligodendroglial-like cells have not been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 15-year-old girl presented with nausea, vomiting, headache, and visual disturbance. DIAGNOSIS: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large neoplasm in the left temporal. Histologically, the tumor showed solid and pseudopapillary structure. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the tumor cells were pos

Gliomatosis cerebri in a patient with Ollier disease.

Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) is an uncommon brain tumour defined as a diffuse neoplastic glial cell infiltration of the brain, involving more than two cerebral lobes and, occasionally, the infratentorial structures or the spinal cord. GC of the oligodendroglial phenotype is extremely rare, especially in the paediatric setting. We describe an unusual case of oligodendroglial GC diagnosed in a 16-year-old boy with Ollier disease. To our knowledge this is the first case of GC reported in a child with Ollier disease.

The landscape of common genetic drivers and DNA methylation in low-grade (epilepsy-associated) neuroepithelial tumors: A review.

Low-grade neuroepithelial tumors (LNETs) represent an important group of central nervous system neoplasms, some of which may be associated to epilepsy. The concept of long-term epilepsy-associated tumors (LEATs) includes a heterogenous group of low-grade, cortically based tumors, associated to drug-resistant epilepsy, often requiring surgical treatment. LEATs entities can sometimes be poorly discriminated by histological features, precluding a confident classification in the absence of additional diagnostic tools. This study aimed to provide an updated review on the genomic findings and DNA me

Glioma of the acoustic nerve.

We report a case of astrocytoma of the acoustic nerve. Most gliomas arise from the brainstem, and seldom originate in the acoustic or other "true" cranial and spinal nerves. Clinical features of this rare acoustic tumor differ from those of brainstem gliomas, but are indistinguishable from typical acoustic neurilemoma. We discuss the diagnosis and histogenesis of glioma arising in the eighth cranial nerve. Demonstration of glial fibrillary acid protein, an antigen specific for astrocytes, is a new method of verifying the diagnosis. Review of the literature indicates that a few cases of epithel

Unveiling a genetic rarity: intracranial sarcomatous tumor with EWSR1::PATZ1 fusion-a case report and review of the literature.

PATZ1 fusion neuroepithelial tumors (NET) are beginning to be recognized as a distinct molecular class of neoplasms that most often occur in children and young adults. These tumors are polyphenotypic, show diverse morphologic features, may be low- or high-grade, and tend to have an intermediate prognosis. We present a rare case of a high-grade NET harboring an EWSR1::PATZ1 fusion, identified through DNA methylation profiling and validated by gene expression analysis. The case involved a 21-year-old female presenting with headaches and seizures. The tumor was supratentorial in close relation to

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumors of the posterior fossa.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (RGNT) of the fourth ventricle is a rare, recently described WHO Grade I neoplasm. The authors report 6 examples of RGNT arising primarily from the cerebellar vermis. All the patients were female, and the mean age of presentation was 24.8 years. The original diagnoses included pilocytic astrocytoma, ependymoma, cerebellar dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT), and oligodendroglioma. The cases showed classic pathological characteristics, although in 2 cases the lesions included DNT-like "floating neurons" involving Purkinje cells, a feature which has no

Bcl-2 expression in a papillary tumor of the pineal region.

Neuroepithelial papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) has been described by several groups and recognized by the 2007 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. The proto-oncogen Blc-2 can function as an apoptosis suppressor and can promote neoplastic transformation. It may also be involved in neuroendocrine differentiation in some tumors. As PTPRs express neuroendocrine markers, we investigated the expression of Bcl-2 in tumoral cells of a new case of PTPR in a 42-year-old woman. Bcl-2 immunostaining was detected in the cytoplasm of the tumoral cel

Pediatric high-grade neuroepithelial BCOR tandem duplicated tumor: An illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) high-grade neuroepithelial tumors with BCL-6 co-repressor (BCOR) exon 15 internal tandem-duplication (ITD) are rare, aggressive pediatric neoplasms characterized by poor prognosis and unclear treatment protocols. The diagnosis requires molecular confirmation, and early neurosurgical intervention is critical. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old male presented with progressive fatigue, ataxia, and signs of increased intracranial pressure. Imaging revealed a large left frontal mass with midline shift. Emergent bifrontal craniotomy was performed, achieving gros

Suprasellar chordoid neoplasm with expression of thyroid transcription factor 1: evidence that chordoid glioma of the third ventricle and pituicytoma may form part of a spectrum of lineage-related tumors of the basal forebrain.

Chordoid glioma of the third ventricle is a rare neuroepithelial tumor characterized by a unique histomorphology and exclusive association with the suprasellar/third ventricular compartment. Variously interpreted as either astrocytic- or ependymal-like, and speculatively ascribed to the lamina terminalis/subcommissural organ, its histogenesis remains, nevertheless, unsettled. Here, we report on a suprasellar chordoid glioma occurring in a 52-year-old man. Although displaying otherwise typical morphological features, the tumor was notable for expression of thyroid transcription factor 1, a mark

A morphologic classification of brain tumors found in several strains of mice.

Brain tumors were found in 42 mice from a total study population of 77,410 mice, which included several strains (BALB/c, C3H, C57BL/6, and hybrids of these strains). The brain tumors were classified on the basis of the new World Health Organization classification of human brain tumors. Tumors originated from neuroepithelial and meningeal tissues, blood vessels, and germ cells. The youngest animal with a tumor was 111 days of age. The tumor incidence was low, being 0.054% of the total study population, with 0.067% in controls and 0.052% in treated mice. Lipomas were the most common type of tumo

Cerebral astroblastoma: A case report and review of literature.

Astroblastomas are uncommon neuroepithelial tumors of uncertain origin. These occur predominantly in the cerebral hemisphere of young adults and children. They form only 0.45-2.8% of all neuroglial tumors. They can be easily misdiagnosed as they are rarely encountered in clinical practice and share common radiological and histopathologic appearance with other glial neoplasms. A 12-year-old female presented to us with progressive headache and diplopia. Her neurological examination showed right 6(th) nerve paresis with papilledema. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed well-demarcated,

Neuromastoma of the hard palate mucosa in an Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea).

A hard palate mass was surgically removed from an Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) and examined pathologically. The tumor consisted of sheets of small cells arranged in a tubular structure and cords or rosettes with fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for cytokeratin and neuron-specific enolase and partially positive for S-100 and doublecortin. These findings indicate that the tumor originated from the neuroectodermal tissue. Based on these findings, the tumor was classified as a neuromastoma (neuroepithelioma). Sensory cells locat

Glioneuronal and Neuronal Tumors of the Central Nervous System.

Glioneuronal and neuronal tumors (GNTs) are rare neoplasms composed of neural and glial elements frequently located in the temporal lobe. Epilepsy is the main symptom and diagnosis mostly occurs before adulthood. The great majority of GNTs are WHO grade I tumors, but anaplastic transformations and forms exist. Their common association with focal cortical dysplasia is well recognized and should be taken into consideration during neurophysiological presurgical and surgical planning since the aim of surgery should be the removal of the tumor and of the entire epileptogenic zone according to anato
