The hypothalamic-pituitary unit is a particularly radiosensitive region in the central nervous system. As a consequence, hypopituitarism commonly develops after radiation treatments for sellar and parasellar neoplasms, extrasellar brain tumours, head and neck tumours, and following whole body irradiation for systemic malignancies. Increasing tumour-related survival rates provide an expanding population at risk of developing hypopituitarism. In this population, long-term monitoring tailored to the individual risk profile is required to avoid the sequelae of untreated pituitary hormonal deficien

Malignant transformation of benign neoplasm after radiosurgery is usually diagnosed based on the initial presence of benign tumor, its exposure to ionizing radiation, elapsed time from radiation exposure to malignant progression, and different histological characteristics or growth rate of the regrowing tumor comparing with those originally treated. Three presented cases fulfilled these diagnostic criteria; however, it seems that progression of the tumors (schwannoma, meningioma, chordoma) resulted from the natural course of the disease, rather than represented side effects of gamma knife radi

Exposure to ionizing radiation is not thought to cause chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Challenging this notion are recent data suggesting CLL incidence may be increased by radiation exposure from the atomic bombs (after many decades), uranium mining and nuclear power facility accidents. To assess the effects of therapeutic ionizing radiation for the treatment of solid neoplasms we studied CLL risks in data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. Specifically, we compared the risks of developing CLL in persons with a 1(st) non-hematologic cancer treated with or

The skeletal effects of radiation are dependent upon many variables, but the pathologic features are consistent. Radiation may cause immediate or delayed cell death, cellular injury with recovery, arrest of cellular division, or abnormal repair with neoplasia. Radiation necrosis and radiation-induced neoplasm still occur despite the use of supervoltage therapy. Complications of radiotherapy are well known and have led to more judicious use of this therapeutic modality. With few exceptions, benign bone tumors are no longer treated with irradiation. Radiation necrosis may be difficult to differe

Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathies causing optic nerve damage and visual field defects, and is one of the leading causes of blindness. Nearly a century has passed since the first report of glaucoma manifested following ionizing radiation therapy of cancers. Nevertheless, associations between glaucoma and radiation exposures, a dose response relationship, and the mechanistic underpinnings remain incompletely understood. Here we review the current knowledge on manifestations and mechanisms of radiogenic glaucoma. There is some evidence that neovascular glaucoma is manifest relatively quic

PURPOSES: To compare the degree of curvature in the dose-response for chromosome aberrations and for radiation-induced cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comparison of the ratio of the quadratic and linear coefficients (in dose) in Japanese atomic bomb survivor cancer incidence data, based on follow-up to 1987 and taking account of random errors in DS86 dose estimates with the same ratio in four datasets of chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes measured in vitro and exposed to 60Co gamma radiation.
RESULTS: There are no statistically significant differences between the four in v

The subject of the reproductive toxicity of various forms of radiation can be anxiety provoking to the public on two accounts, since reproductive failure engenders an unusual level of guilt and anger in the affected families, and radiation effects are misunderstood and feared by the public. Reproductive problems include an array of genetic and acquired diseases affecting parents and their offspring. Many of these problems are associated with the risk of being induced by preconception and/or postconception exposures to environmental agents. For the various forms of radiation, namely, ionizing r

Introduction. Mortality rates from malignant neoplasms can be considered a key marker of adverse environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to assess the association between exposure to ionizing radiation and the risk of mortality from malignant neoplasms among the population of Kazakhstan living in areas adjacent to the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (SNTS). Materials and Methods. The main source of data used in this study was the mortality sub-register of the population living in territories adjacent to the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (SNTS). The main study group included resident

Over the last 60 years epidemiologic radiation studies have largely shifted from identifying the range of detriments from high radiation exposures to quantifying the magnitude and uncertainties of risks in the low-dose range. Similarly, my efforts began with relatively high-dose studies of cohorts from bygone eras: follow-up of children who were treated with x-ray for scalp ringworm, infants whose thymus glands were shrunk by radiation, and women who received x-ray therapy for breast infections. A follow-up study was conducted to estimate cataract risk among clean-up workers after the 1986 Che

There is almost no subject that elicits greater concern and less objective understanding than that of exposure of patients to radiation accompanying diagnostic radiologic procedures. One or more of the health effects (cancer, developmental abnormalties and genetic changes) attributed to low-level exposure to radiation are frequently misinterpreted as likely consequences rather than statistical risks following radiation exposure. Even less well understood is the small magnitude of the risks accompanying radiation exposure compared with those related to activities encountered during the daily ro

Radiation-induced (RI) secondary cancers were not a major clinical concern even as little as 15 years ago. However, advances in cancer diagnostics, therapy, and supportive care have saved numerous lives and many former cancer patients are now living for 5, 10, 20, and more years beyond their initial diagnosis. The majority of these patients have received radiotherapy as a part of their treatment regimen and are now beginning to develop secondary cancers arising from normal tissue exposure to damaging effects of ionizing radiation. Because historically patients rarely survived past the extended

To determine if barbiturates would protect brain at high doses of radiation, survival rates in rats that received whole-brain x-irradiation during pentobarbital- or lidocaine-induced anesthesia were compared with those of control animals that received no medication and of animals anesthetized with ketamine. The animals were shielded so that respiratory and digestive tissues would not be damaged by the radiation. Survival rates in rats that received whole-brain irradiation as a single 7500-rad dose under pentobarbital- or lidocaine-induced anesthesia was increased from between from 0% and 20% t

Ocular surface tumors, originating from either the conjunctiva or the cornea, primarily fall into three categories of malignant or premalignant neoplasms: ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), ocular surface melanocytic tumors, and conjunctival lymphoid tumors. These neoplasms can originate from either the conjunctiva or the cornea. Exposure to space radiation, particularly galactic cosmic rays, and solar particle events, poses a significant threat to astronaut health, including the development of ocular malignancies. As such, the objective of this study was to describe the exposure risk f

Exposure to radon progeny results in heterogeneous dose distributions in many different spatial scales. The aim of this review is to provide an overview on the state of the art in epidemiology, clinical observations, cell biology, dosimetry, and modelling related to radon exposure and its association with lung cancer, along with priorities for future research. Particular attention is paid on the effects of spatial variation in dose delivery within the organs, a factor not considered in radiation protection. It is concluded that a multidisciplinary approach is required to improve risk assessmen

Moderate to high doses of ionizing radiation (IR) are known to increase the risk of cancer, particularly following childhood exposure. Concerns remain regarding risks from lower doses and the role of cancer-predisposing factors (CPF; genetic disorders, immunodeficiency, mutations/variants in DNA damage detection or repair genes) on radiation-induced cancer (RIC) risk. We conducted a systematic review of evidence that CPFs modify RIC risk in young people. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE for epidemiologic studies of cancer risk in humans (<25 years) with

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation therapy is commonly utilized in the majority of solid cancers and many hematologic malignancies and other disorders. While it has an undeniably major role in improving cancer survival, radiation therapy has long been recognized to have various negative effects, ranging from mild to severe. In this manuscript, we review several intracranial manifestations of therapeutic radiation, with particular attention to those that may be encountered by radiologists.
METHODS: We conducted an extensive literature review of known complications of intracranial radiation ther
