[Vasculitis of the nervous system in infectious diseases].

Vasculitis and vasculopathies of the central and peripheral nervous system can be caused by infectious diseases. Vasculitis can lead to stenosis, occlusion and aneurysm formation of blood vessels which may result in stroke or cerebral haemorrhage. In cases of peripheral nervous system involvement mononeuritis multiplex and symmetric peripheral neuropathy are possible. The diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, serology, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroradiologic examinations. In cases of peripheral neuropathy neurophysiologic examinations and biopsy of the sural nerve can lead to t

Ion channel diseases of the central nervous system.

In the last decade, advances in molecular genetics and cellular electrophysiology have increased our understanding of ion channel function. A number of diseases termed "channelopathies" have been discovered that are caused by ion channel dysfunction. Channelopathies can be caused by autoimmune, iatrogenic, toxic or genetic mechanisms. Mutations in genes encoding ion channel proteins that disrupt channel function are now the most commonly identified cause of channelopathies, perhaps because gene disruption is readily detected by the methods of molecular genetics. Ion channels are abundant in th

Parasitic diseases of the nervous system in Thailand.

In Thailand there are 3 parasites that commonly cause neurological diseases in man. 1) In gnathostomiasis man becomes an accidental host by eating infected under-cooked fresh water fish. The tissue nematode involved, Gnathostoma spinigerum, because of its high motility, may cause widespread damage in the spinal cord and brain stem. The common presenting neurological symptoms are severe nerve root pain, paralysis of limbs and urinary retention. Less frequently seen are cranial nerve palsies and symptoms of subarachnoid haemorrhage. The disease has significant morbidity and mortality. 2) Eosinop

The adaptive immune system in diseases of the central nervous system.

Tissues of the CNS, such as the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord, may be affected by a range of insults including genetic, autoimmune, infectious, or neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. The immune system is involved in the pathogenesis of many of these, either by causing tissue damage or alternatively by responding to disease and contributing to repair. It is clearly vital that cells of the immune system patrol the CNS and protect against infection. However, in contrast to other tissues, damage caused by immune pathology in the CNS can be irreparable. The nervous and immune systems have

Microglial ferroptosis mediated neuroinflammation in central nervous system diseases.

Microglial ferroptosis has become an important pathological mechanism in studies of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Rather than being viewed only as an endpoint of cell death, ferroptosis in microglia is increasingly recognized as a process that links iron dyshomeostasis, lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, and immune-inflammatory activation, thereby contributing to the sustained amplification of neuroinflammation. In this review, we summarize the molecular mechanisms by which microglial ferroptosis mediates neuroinflammatory responses, with a focus on iron homeostasis disruption, lip

KAT5: the epigenetic regulator of central nervous system diseases.

Abnormal epigenetic modifications are involved in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Histones play a crucial role in chromatin structure and function, whose post-translational modifications significantly impact gene expression and chromatin dynamics. Histone acetylation, governed by the balance between histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs), is one of the key modulators of chromatin accessibility and transcriptional activity. Lysine acetyltransferase 5 (KAT5, aka TIP60), a member of the MYST subfamily of HATs, is involved in many cellular processes, including DN

Imaging of Central Nervous System Diseases that Affect Vision.

This article provides a comprehensive imaging-based description of central nervous system diseases that impair vision, spanning infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, vascular, metabolic, neurodegenerative, congenital, traumatic, and idiopathic etiologies. It integrates visual pathway anatomy with characteristic clinical and imaging findings, emphasizing lesion localization from the retina to the occipital cortex. Advanced neuroimaging techniques, particularly MRI and CT, are highlighted as essential tools for diagnosis, prognostication, and management. By correlating areas of structural pathol…

Oral microbiota and central nervous system diseases: A review.

Oral microbiota is the second largest microbial colony in the body and forms a complex ecological community that influences oral and brain health. Impaired homeostasis of the oral microbiota can lead to pathological changes, resulting in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. However, the mechanisms and clinical value of how the oral microbiome influences the brain remain unclear. This review summarizes recent clinical findings on the role of the oral microbiota in CNS diseases and proposes potential approaches to understand the way the oral microbiota and brain communicate. We propose three u

[Role of succinylation modification in central nervous system diseases].

Succinylation is a post-translational modification that occurs on lysine residues and is mediated by succinyl-CoA, an intermediate of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. It can significantly affect protein conformation, activity, stability, and interactions with other molecules, thereby participating in the regulation of important biological processes such as cellular metabolism, energy homeostasis, and signaling pathways. In recent years, increasing evidence has shown that succinylation plays a key role in central nervous system (CNS) diseases, particularly in Alzheimer's disease, stroke, sub

The role of the nervous system in liver diseases.

The nervous system significantly participates in maintaining homeostasis, and modulating repair and regeneration processes in the liver. Moreover, the nervous system also plays an important role in the processes associated with the development and progression of liver disease, and can either potentiate or inhibit these processes. The aim of this review is to describe the mechanisms and pathways through which the nervous system influences the development and progression of liver diseases, such as alcohol-associated liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cholestatic liver disease, hepa

[B vitamins and diseases of the peripheral nervous system].

Various diseases of the peripheral nervous system are associated with metabolic disorders of B vitamins. A lack of neurotropic vitamins, which began in the early stages of the development of a bacterial disease, led to its more rapid development. The article analyzes data on B vitamin deficiency in the pathogenesis of the most dangerous diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Information is provided about the dangers of the clinical use of the drug Combilipen for the treatment of such patients.
