The national immunization program of The Netherlands.

After a brief explanation of the immunization policy in the Netherlands, the national immunization program is described, with special attention given to coupling of the municipal population records with a computerized database of individual immunization records at the provincial level. The Dutch program achieves coverage rates greater than 90% for all routine immunizations. Participation in the program is free of charge to every child living in the country up to the age of 13 years, but there is no obligation or requirement to be immunized. Financing of the program is also discussed.

[Autochthonous babesiosis in dogs in the Netherlands?].

For the first time cases of babesiosis have been diagnosed in dogs that had not been abroad. Three cases were seen in the province of Gelderland (Bennekom, Elspeet), two in North-Holland (Koog aan de Zaan). A female Dermacentor reticulatus tick, the main vector of the disease in Europe, was found on one of the dogs at Koog; previously specimens of this tick species had only occasionally been seen on dogs returning from abroad. Serological evidence was obtained that in at least four of the cases European Babesia canis, transmitted by Dermacentor ticks, was involved.

Some provisional data are given of the polio-epidemic in The Netherlands in 1978. Contrary to previous outbreaks, the present epidemic did not only affect areas with low vaccination acceptance rates, cases were also reported from many municipalities with acceptance rates of 90% and over. The epidemic caused by type 1 started mid-April 1978 in the centre of the country. Up to 1st November 110 cases were reported from a belt running from South-West (Zeeland) to North-East (Overijssel). [The history of electroconvulsive therapy in the Netherlands].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has a tumultuous history in the Netherlands. It was found to have particularly favorable results in patients with severe depression or catatonia. Inconvenient side effects such as fractures, muscle tears and memory loss, however, became apparent. Due to technical developments and application of anesthesia, these side effects decreased considerably. In the 1960s, the use of ECT decreased due to the rise of psychopharmaceuticals and the emergence of the antipsychiatry movement. The procedure regained popularity in the 1980s, following the favorable, yet cautious r…

Persistent Postthyroidectomy Hypoparathyroidism in the Netherlands.

IMPORTANCE: Hypoparathyroidism is one of the most common complications after total or completion thyroidectomy. The reported incidence rate of hypoparathyroidism in the literature is highly variable. Data that provide a better understanding of the magnitude of this postoperative complication are warranted and can provide a stepping stone for further collaborations that aim to reduce complication rates and establish uniform treatment protocols. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of postoperative, persistent hypoparathyroidism after total or completion thyroidectomy in patients who were refer

Zoonotic Endocarditis in a Man, the Netherlands.

In 2017, endocarditis caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus was diagnosed in a man in the Netherlands who had daily contact with horses. Whole-genome sequencing of isolates from the man and his horses confirmed the same clone, indicating horse-to-human transmission. Systematic reporting of all zoonotic cases would help with risk assessment.

Diagnostic Delay of Endometriosis in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endometriosis has a long diagnostic delay that is influenced by varying socio-economic and healthcare factors. In the Dutch situation, these factors are not yet identified. The aim of this study is to determine the length of the diagnostic delay of endometriosis in the Netherlands and to identify which variables affect this delay. METHODS: A retrospective study among 139 patients diagnosed with endometriosis in a secondary care hospital with a specialized multidisciplinary endometriosis team. The diagnostic process was evaluated using a questionnaire-guided telephonic intervi…

Timing of detection of anencephaly in The Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the gestational age at detection and prevalence of anencephaly in the North of The Netherlands over a 5-year period. METHODS: A case list of all cases of anencephaly from two fetal medicine units was compiled. Cases were included if the estimated due date was between 1 August 2008 and 31 July 2013. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of anencephaly was 5.4 per 10.000 pregnancies (n = 110). The majority of cases (69%) was detected before 18 weeks' gestation. Factors determining successful early diagnosis were competence level of the sonographers, wi…

Gambling and problem gambling in The Netherlands.

AIMS: To provide an overview of gambling in the Netherlands, focusing on historical background, policy, legislation, prevalence of problem gambling, availability of treatment options and research base. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: Contradictions between gambling policy and practice have been present in the past 15-20 years, and have led to an increasingly stricter gambling regulation to retain the government policy to restrict gambling within a national monopoly. Conversely, political efforts have been made to legalize internet gambling, but have not yet been approved. Compared to ot…

Prevalence of Dupuytren disease in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren disease is a fibroproliferative disease of palmar fascias of the hand. The prevalence of Dupuytren disease and the association with potential risk factors have been the subject of several studies, although there is a paucity of such data from The Netherlands. METHODS: To study the prevalence of Dupuytren disease, the authors drew a random sample of 1360 individuals, stratified by age, from the northern part of The Netherlands. Of this sample, 763 individuals aged 50 to 89 years participated in this cross-sectional study. The authors examined both hands for signs of Dupuy…

Hospitalization due to varicella in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, incidence of physician's consultations and hospitalizations for varicella is low compared to other countries. Better knowledge about the severity of varicella among Dutch hospitalized patients is needed. Therefore, a medical record research was conducted among hospitalized patients with diagnosis varicella. METHODS: Hospital admissions due to varicella in 2003-2006 were obtained from the National Medical Register. Retrospectively, additional data were retrieved from the medical record of patients hospitalized with varicella in 23 Dutch hospitals using a standar…

Congenital toxoplasmosis and DALYs in the Netherlands.

The calculation of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) enables public health policy makers to compare the burden of disease of a specific disease with that of other (infectious) diseases. The incidence of a disease is important for the calculation of DALYs. To estimate the incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis (CT), a random sample of 10,008 dried blood spot filter paper cards from babies born in 2006 in the Netherlands were tested for Toxoplasma gondii-specific IgM antibodies. Eighteen samples were confirmed as positive for IgM, resulting in an observed birth incidence of CT of 1.8 cases p…
