A nasal neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) extending into the brain in a heifer produced mouth breathing and proptosis. The mass filled much of the left nasal cavity, palatine sinus and maxillary sinus, with turbinate atrophy and deviation of the septum. Caudally the neoplasm extended into the nasopharynx and olfactory bulb. It was a cellular neoplasm composed of small, undifferentiated piriform cells showing infrequent pseudorosettes and immature axonal processes. Mitosis was common is some areas.

A "dumbbell" neuroblastoma is a malignant neoplasm usually primary in the mediastinum or retroperitoneum with posterior extension through an intervertebral foramen to additional tumor within the spinal canal. Neurologic deficits are found in almost all cases. Nineteen patients with such tumors were reviewed with respect to diagnosis, management, and results. Treatment consisted of prompt laminectomy with total or subtotal excision of the extradural tumor. The primary tumor in the mediastinum or retroperitoneal area was removed at a second stage. All patients received postoperative radiation th…

Olfactory neuroblastomas are uncommon malignancies that arise from olfactory receptor cells located high in the nasal cavity. Accurate diagnosis plays a crucial role in determining clinical results and guiding treatment decisions. Diagnosis can be a major challenge for pathologists, especially when dealing with tumours with poor differentiation. The discovery of several molecular and immunohistochemical markers would help to overcome classification difficulties. Due to the paucity of large-scale studies, standardisation of diagnosis, treatment and prediction of outcome remains a challenge. Sur…

Neuroblastoma is the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumor derived from primitive neural crest cells of the sympathetic nervous system. Although one-fifths of all neuroblastomas occurs within the thorax, thoracic neuroblastomas detected in fetus have been rarely reported. We report a case of fetal thoracic neuroblastoma with massive pleural effusion detected with prenatal ultrasonography. A 34-year-old Korean second-gravida was referred to our hospital at 30 weeks of gestation for evaluation, after the right lung mass found in the fetus. Approximately 3 cm, well-defined, hyperechoic m…

Neuroblastoma the most common malignant tumor of childhood, which is often localized in the retroperitoneal space, mainly in the adrenal glands, paravertebral retroperitoneal space, at rare in the posterior mediastinum, in the neck, presacral area. First symptoms of neuroblastoma are nonspecific, mimic various diseases. In the following clinical manifestations depend on the localization of the tumor, stage presence and location of metastases. In the diagnosis of neuroblastoma using ultrasonography and computed tomography. Of the 26 children whose neuroblastoma detected in different periods hav…

BACKGROUND: Tumors known derived from kidneys which take place in secondary hyperaldosteronism etiology are juxtaglomerular cell tumor and Wilms' tumor. Neuroblastoma presenting with hyperaldosteronism is rare.
CASE: A 15-month-old girl who had been having diarrhea and fever for 2 weeks presented with a 3 day history of bilious vomiting, metabolic acidosis and severe hypokalemia. She was referred to our hospital with the pre-diagnosis of unknown manifest hypertension etiology, diarrhea, and paralytic ileus after having therapy-resistant hypokalemia and severe resistant acidosis. On her examin…

Neuroblastoma is a common solid tumor of childhood that can involve the abdomen, thorax, pelvis, or the head and neck. The clinical manifestations are dependent on the widespread distribution of neural crest tissue and the length of the sympathetic chain involvement. Abdominal pain and hypertension may occur as a result of renal vasculature compression; respiratory distress may be evident in thoracic tumors; and Homer's syndrome or heterochromia of the iris may manifest from neuroblastoma of the head and neck. In addition, symptoms of cord compression and back pain may result from spinal cord …

OBJECT: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ON) is a rare neoplasm arising from the olfactory epithelium and found in the upper nasal cavity. The authors studied the frequency with which ON is misdiagnosed with other tumors of the paranasal sinuses such as neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), pituitary adenoma, melanoma, lymphoma, and sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC). Based on the belief that misdiagnosis commonly occurs, they emphasized the importance of establishing the correct diagnosis, because the treatment regimens and prognosis of these tumor types are often significantly different.

The authors present material of 12 cases olfactory neuroblastoma observed in Head and Neck Department of Cancer Center in Warsaw from 1961 to 1998. The tumors were seen in 8 women and 4 men. According to Kadish staging there were one A, three B, and eight C stages tumors. Patient in stage A was treated with surgery and radiotherapy. One patient in stage B was treated with surgery and radiotherapy. Two patients in stage B were treated with radiotherapy alone. Six patients in stage C were treated also with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Two patients in stage C were treated with surgery …

BACKGROUND: Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) greatly impairs quality of life (QoL). Thus, patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, using validated scoring instruments, are probably the most accurate tools available for assessing the efficacy of medications that treat CIU, such as second-generation antihistamines.
RESEARCH METHODS: A structured search of the MEDLINE database was conducted to identify English-language papers published between 1 January 1991 and 30 September 2007 on the treatment of CIU with the second-generation antihistamines cetirizine, desloratadine, fexofenadine, and levo

Primary neuroblastoma of the head and neck is rare. The clinical presentation and physical findings are related to the child's age, the stage and location of the primary tumor, and its attendant biological behavior. The differential diagnosis is varied, and initial evaluation includes a thorough physical examination, selected laboratory studies, and specific high-yield imaging techniques. The prognosis of these lesions has been increasingly favorable, even when the disease is not localized. Carefully planned surgical approaches provide local control, and radiation and chemotherapy may be benef…

PURPOSE: To evaluate MR in the diagnosis and staging of olfactory neuroblastoma.
METHODS: Five patients with histologically proved olfactory neuroblastomas were studied by MR. Four also had CT scans.
RESULTS: The extent of disease delineated by MR agreed with surgical findings and surgical staging of the tumor in all five patients. All cases of olfactory neuroblastomas originated in the nasal cavity and involved the ethmoid sinuses. In three of the five cases, the tumors extended to the anterior skull base. In one case MR correctly suggested skull base involvement missed on CT. Lesions were …

Neuroblastoma is a common solid tumor of infancy and childhood. From 1967 to 1986 we evaluated and treated 58 children with neuroblastoma; in ten (17%) of these children, symptomatic hepatic metastasis developed. The ten children ranged in age from 2 days to 2 years 3 months. The most common symptoms attributable to hepatic metastasis were abdominal enlargement, abdominal pain, respiratory difficulty due to upward pressure on the diaphragm, and obstruction of the inferior vena cava. At the time of initial diagnosis, two children had stage III disease, three had stage IV disease, and five had s…

Neuroblastoma IV-S (IV-Special) stage has been reviewed according to the current concepts as stated by Evans et al. Biological and clinical features of such a stage of disease are presented. These data suggest that the occurrence of different sites of involvement can be observed in addition to those definided previously. General views of treatment also described.
