Management of Central and Peripheral Nervous System Tumors in Patients with Neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), and schwannomatosis represent a diverse group of genetic tumor predispositio … ides an update regarding considerations and approaches when treating the tumors associated with the neurofibromatoses (NF), including risk and prognosis metrics, clinical trial results, surgical techniques, and radiation therapy recommendations.

Neurofibromatosis type 1.

The neurofibromatoses are a group of three heterogeneous disorders that include neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), and schwannomatosis. NF1 is the most common of these three conditions, and represents one of the most frequently diagnosed cancer predisposition disorders involving the nervous system. While NF1 primarily affects the central and peripheral nervous system, multisystem involvement is the rule, with dermatologic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and orthopedic affectation often reported. Importantly, NF1 is a disorder of heterogeneity, such that affected…

Optimizing biologically targeted clinical trials for neurofibromatosis.

INTRODUCTION: The neurofibromatoses (neurofibromatosis type 1, NF1 and neurofibromatosis type 2, NF2) comprise the most common inherited conditions in which affected children and adults develop tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system. In this review, the authors discuss how the establishment of the Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trials Consortium (NFCTC) has positively impacted on the design and execution of treatment studies for individuals with NF1 and NF2. AREAS COVERED: Using an extensive PUBMED search in collaboration with select NFCTC members expert in distinct NF topics, the au…

[Neurofibromatosis].

BACKGROUND & FOCUS: While the Neurofibromatoses have been observed and classified by their phenotypes for several centuries, their great variability constitutes a considerable challenge in diagnostics and therapy selection. This article focuses on highlighting the three most frequent sub-types NF1, NF2 and NF3. METHODS: All three NF types are outlined by the following measures: the history of their clinical detection, the typical appearance, the underlying genetic constitution and its consequences, the official diagnostic criteria, the mandatory diagnostic steps and finally the treatment oppo…

[How to recognize neurofibromatosis?].

Neurofibromatosis 1 is a hereditary symptom predisposing to cancer, affecting some 1,500 Finnish people. This systemic disease is most commonly detected through cutaneous findings. Although the cutaneous symptoms are harmless, they impair the patients' quality of life. The disease is, however, insidious, as the complications often become manifested from unexpected organ systems. For example cancers originally from nervous systems and severe bone lesions require rapid diagnosis and treatment. The healthcare personnel should thus be aware of the diagnosis of NF syndrome, and the patients should

Segmental neurofibromatosis: report of two cases.

Neurofibromatosis (NF), or von Recklinghausen's disease is comprised of a heterogeneous group of disorders, primarily affecting the skin, soft tissue, bone and central nervous system. Segmental neurofibromatosis (SN) is a rare form of NF, characterized by "café-au-lait" macules, freckles, and/or neurofibromas limited to a body segment. There are approximately 150 cases reported in the English published work. Bilateral segmental neurofibromatosis is a rare subtype of SN, manifesting with bilateral involvement of the body segments. Herein, we report two patients with SN; one associated with pect

Neurofibromatosis--review of the literature and case report.

Neurofibromatoses are genetic disorders of the nervous system that primarily affect the development and growth of neural (nerve) cell tissues. These disorders cause tumors to grow on nerves, and produce other abnormalities such as skin changes and bone deformities. Although many affected persons inherit the disorder, between 30 and 50 percent of new cases arise spontaneously through mutation in the individual's genes. We report on seven cases of type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1) diagnosed from 2001 to 2006 at our Department. There were four female and three male patients, mean age 46.1 and 49 yea…

[Cardiorenal syndrome in an 85-year-old patient with neurofibromatosis. Case report].

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a hereditary disease characterized by the formation and growth of benign tumors of neuroectodermal origin. There are three main nosological forms: NF1, NF2, NF3. It is believed that the disease debuts in childhood and significantly reduces the life expectancy of patients. The main cause of death in middle age are cardiovascular diseases and malignant neoplasms. There are isolated publications on NF in patients over 60 years old. The relationship between NF and cardiorenal syndrome has not been sufficiently studied. The development of vasculitis with vasculopathy is de
