Congenital stationary night blindness: an animal model.

Electroretinographic studies of myctalopic Appaloosa horses demonstrated photopic and scotopic abnormalities similar to those in humans with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) of the Schubert-Bornschein type. The phototopic abnormalities consisted of reduced b-wave amplitudes and slower than normal b-wave implict time. The dark-adapted ERG's consisted of a simple negative potential; the scotopic b-wave was nonrecordable. However, a normal c-wave was present in the dark-adapted response. Histologic studies demonstrated no structural abnormalities that could explain the functional defe…

[Clinical features of congenital stationary night blindness].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical features of Chinese patients with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB). METHODS: An observational serial case study was conducted for 22 patients diagnosed as CSNB at Department of Ophthalmology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital from December 2003 through December 2011. Sixteen patients (72.7%) were males and 6 patients (27.3%) were females. Their age range was 4-73 years old. All of them underwent detailed ocular examinations including electroretinogram (ERG). Thirteen patients underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) while 9 had visual fie…

Photoreceptor calcium channels: insight from night blindness.

The genetic locus for incomplete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2) has been identified as the CACNA1f gene, encoding the alpha 1F calcium channel subunit, a member of the L-type family of calcium channels. The electroretinogram associated with CSNB2 implicates alpha 1F in synaptic transmission between retinal photoreceptors and bipolar cells. Using a recently developed monoclonal antibody to alpha 1F, we localize the channel to ribbon active zones in rod photoreceptor terminals of the mouse retina, supporting a role for alpha 1F in mediating glutamate release from rods. Detergent e…

[ERG characteristics of congenital stationary night blindness].

The ERG of 9 cases (18 eyes) of congenital stationary night blindness with normal fundi or myopia were tested. All eyes showed absence of rod ERG and cone ERG with normal a-wave. Scotopic mixed ERG were of the negative type in 7 eyes and the subnormal type in 11 eyes. The b/a ratio was reduced in all eyes. The ERG characteristics are useful for the classification, estimation of the probable location of the lesion, and differential diagnosis of the disease.

Rayleigh match in congenital stationary night blindness.

Rayleigh matches performed by 13 patients with Schubert-Bornschein type congenital stationary night blindness with normal color vision, revealed that they use consistently slightly more red light primary in order to achieve a brighter yellow match than a control group with normal color vision and visual acuity. The matching differences between the two groups were statistically significant.

Possible pathogenesis of congenital stationary night blindness.

We reported a case of congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) who showed Schubert-Bornschein type electroretinogram (ERG) in the right eye and nearly normal ERG in the left eye with absolute glaucoma. From the electrophysiological findings of both eyes and histological findings of the enucleated eye, we concluded that the mechanism of night blindness in CSNB is an abnormal inhibition in the bipolar cell layer. The experiments in rabbits by vincristine intravenous and intravitreous administrations did not give rise to a negative type ERG, but to a decrease of the amplitude of all ERG compo…

Functional abnormalities in vincristine-induced night blindness.

Various noninvasive test procedures were used to evaluate retinal function in a patient who had become night blind following vincristine chemotherapy. The results obtained were strikingly similar to those reported previously in subjects with recessively inherited stationary night blindness; the dark-adaptation curve was monophasic (ie, no evidence of a scotopic branch), rhodopsin kinetics were entirely normal, and spectral threshold data revealed the presence of residual rod-mediated vision. Also like the heritable condition, the b-wave of the ERG was depressed grossly despite normal a-wave po…
