In this study, aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA) was used as a high-efficiency microbial carrier, and the biological Al-PIA (BA-PIA) was prepared by artificial aeration. Laboratory static experiments were conducted to study the effect of BA-PIA on reducing nitrogen and phosphorus contents in water. Physicochemical characterization and isotope tracing method were applied to analyze the removal mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus. High-throughput techniques were used to analyze the characteristic bacterial genus in the BA-PIA system. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal experiment was

Regulation of nitrogenase, which converts nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonium (NH4+), typically involves a conserved set of regulatory proteins across diverse N2-fixing (diazotrophic) bacteria. However, the interactions and relative influence of these regulators can vary between species. The activity of NifA, the transcriptional activator of the nitrogen fixation (nif) gene, is tightly regulated in response to ammonium and oxygen. However, the mechanisms for the regulation of NifA activity are quite different among various nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Unlike the well-studied NifL-NifA regulatory systems in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Azotobacter vinelandii, in Rhodospirillum rubrum NifA is activated by a direct protein-protein interaction with the uridylylated form of GlnB, which in turn causes a conformational change in NifA. We report the identification of several substitutions i

Rhizobial nitrogen-fixing bacteria are the main inhabitants of the root nodules of legume plants. Studying the bacterial community of legume nodules is important in understanding plant growth and nutrient requirements. Culture-based technique was used to examine the bacterial community of these underground organs from Vigna subterranea L. Verdc (Bambara nut), an underutilized legume in Africa, for plant growth-promoting traits. In this study, Bambara nuts were planted to trap root-nodule bacteria, and the bacteria were morphologically, biochemically, and molecularly characterized. Five selecte

The increasing number of multidrug-resistant microbes now emerging necessitates the identification of novel antimicrobial agents. Plants produce a great variety of antimicrobial peptides including hundreds of small, nodule-specific cysteine-rich NCR peptides that, in the legume Medicago truncatula, govern the differentiation of endosymbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria and, in vitro, can display potent antibacterial activities. In this study, the potential candidacidal activity of 19 NCR peptides was investigated. Cationic NCR peptides having an isoelectric point above 9 were efficient in killing

Plants are increasingly recognized as active contributors to nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes. However, the physiological and biochemical processes underlying these plant-mediated N2O emissions remain poorly defined. This review synthesizes current understanding of direct N2O production pathways within plants, including chloroplast- and mitochondrial-associated processes involving nitrate and nitrite reductases, as well as cytochrome-mediated reactions under specific conditions. Plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere further influence N2O dynamics. Symbiotic nitrogen-fixing b

In the peanut production, the applications of herbicides and fungicides are a common practice. In this work, studies done under field conditions demonstrated that pesticides affected negatively the number and nitrogenase activity of diazotrophic populations of soil. Agrochemical effects were not transient, since these parameters were not recovered to pre-treatment levels even 1 year after pesticides application. Results obtained from greenhouse experiments revealed that the addition of herbicide or fungicides diminished the free-living diazotrophs number reaching levels found in soil amended w

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia) form a nodule symbiosis with legumes, but also induce certain effects on non-host plants. Here, we used a split-root system of barley to examine whether inoculation with Rhizobium sp. strain NGR234 on one side of a split-root system systemically affects arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) root colonization on the other side. Mutant strains of NGR234 deficient in Nod factor production (strain NGRΔnodABC), perception of flavonoids (strain NGRΔnodD1) and secretion of type 3 effector proteins (strain NGRΩrhcN) were included in this study. Inoculation resulted in a syste

Genes thuA and thuB in Sinorhizobium meliloti Rm1021 code for a major pathway for trehalose catabolism and are induced by trehalose but not by related structurally similar disaccharides like sucrose or maltose. S. meliloti strains mutated in either of these two genes were severely impaired in their ability to grow on trehalose as the sole source of carbon. ThuA and ThuB show no homology to any known enzymes in trehalose utilization. ThuA has similarity to proteins of unknown function in Mesorhizobium loti, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and Brucella melitensis, and ThuB possesses homology to dehyd

Legumes, which develop a symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, have an increased demand for iron. Iron is required for the synthesis of iron-containing proteins in the host, including the highly abundant leghemoglobin, and in bacteroids for nitrogenase and cytochromes of the electron transport chain. Deficiencies in iron can affect initiation and development of the nodule. Within root cells, iron is chelated with organic acids such as citrate and nicotianamine and distributed to other parts of the plant. Transport to the nitrogen-fixing bacteroids in infected cells of nodules is more compli

Bacterial symbionts, with their shorter generation times and capacity for horizontal gene transfer (HGT), play a critical role in allowing marine organisms to cope with environmental change. The closure of the Isthmus of Panama created distinct environmental conditions in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) and Caribbean, offering a "natural experiment" for studying how closely related animals evolve and adapt under environmental change. However, the role of bacterial symbionts in this process is often overlooked. We sequenced the genomes of endosymbiotic bacteria in two sets of sister species

Nitrogen fertilizer is crucial for agricultural output. However, prolonged overuse has resulted in nitrate leaching and potential soil acidification. Research on microbial fertilizer has become essential to enhance soil conditions and minimize nitrogen fertilizer usage. In alfalfa cultivation, research on efficient compound microbial agents remains limited, therefore this study concentrates on the investigation of dual microbial combinations. In the screening process, black soil was utilized with alfalfa plants as samples to identify a strain of rhizobacteria, Sinorhizobium meliloti LMGL3-1, e

The continuous growth of the global population and the need to ensure food security require the development of sustainable agricultural technologies capable of maintaining crop productivity while reducing environmental impact. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria belonging to the genera Azotobacter and Azospirillum have attracted increasing interest due to their ability to improve plant nutrition and stimulate physiological processes associated with growth and productivity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the commercial biostimulant Azotofertil, based on Azotobacter chroococcum

Biodegradable microplastics (MPs) are proposed as sustainable alternatives to conventional MPs, yet their distinct effects on soil microbial communities and ecological functions remain insufficiently understood. This study compares the impacts of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on soil microbial assemblages and nitrogen cycling. Fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse) activity was temporarily stimulated by 2 % (w/w) PLA and PVC MPs, while 7 % (w/w) PVC MPs initially inhibited FDAse activity before promoting it. PLA MPs (2 % and 7 %, w/w) dramat

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is emerging as an important signalling molecule that regulates plant growth and abiotic stress responses. However, the roles of H2 S in symbiotic nitrogen (N) assimilation and remobilization have not been characterized. Therefore, we examined how H2 S influences the soybean (Glycine max)/rhizobia interaction in terms of symbiotic N fixation and mobilization during N deficiency-induced senescence. H2 S enhanced biomass accumulation and delayed leaf senescence through effects on nodule numbers, leaf chlorophyll contents, leaf N resorption efficiency, and the N contents in

Nitrogen is often a limiting nutrient in natural habitats. Therefore, cyanobacteria have developed multiple responses, which are controlled by transcription factor NtcA and the PII-signaling protein, to adapt to nitrogen deficiency. Transcriptional analyses of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 under nitrogen-deficient conditions revealed a highly induced gene (sll0783) which is annotated as encoding a conserved protein with an unknown function. This gene is part of a cluster of seven genes and has potential NtcA-binding sites in the upstream region. Homologues of this cluster occur in some uni

The development of the knowledge on the mineral nutrition of plants begins between the 17th and 18th centuries when some European naturalists gave the first experimental evidences of what had been empirically known for about two millennia. The works of Hales and Ingenhousz were of absolute importance in relation to the transport of water and solutes, and assimilation of "fixed air" (carbon dioxide), respectively. The early chemistry introduced by Lavoisier benefited the first physiologists Senebier and De Saussure to reject the "theory of humus", which imposed the soil as the unique source of

Significant research is focused on the ability of riparian zones to reduce groundwater nitrate contamination. Owing to the extremely high redox activity of nitrate, naturally existing electron donors, such as organic matter and iron minerals, are crucial in facilitating nitrate reduction in the riparian zone. Here, we examined the coexistence of magnetite, an iron mineral, and nitrate, a frequently observed coexisting system in sediments, to investigate nitrate reduction features at various C/N ratios and evaluate the response of microbial communities to these settings. Additionally, we aimed

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a predominant constraint on plant growth in acidified soils, largely due to the sequestration of P by toxic aluminum (Al) compounds. Indigenous phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSBs) capable of mobilizing Al-P in these soils hold significant promise. A novel Al-P-solubilizing strain, Al-P Nguyenibacter sp. L1, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of healthy Lespedeza bicolor plants indigenous to acidic terrains. However, our understanding of the genomic landscape of bacterial species within the genus Nguyenibacter remains in its infancy. To further explore its b
