Development of resistance to noise.

Recent investigations have demonstrated that in animal models repeated exposures to mid-intensity noise induce a progressive reduction of the temporary threshold shift (TTS) following the exposures. This phenomenon is named "conditioning" and it is actually able to reduce the permanent threshold shift (PTS) following exposure to high intensity noise; this finding is named "toughening". In the present work the fundamental steps of the research concerning the toughening are reviewed and the biological mechanisms supposed to be underlying this phenomenon discussed. The few preliminary results of

Low noise resonant amplification by optical injection locking and residual phase noise cancellation.

We demonstrate a resonant optical amplifier that combines injection locking with feed-forward cancellation of residual phase noise. The wavelength-agnostic architecture uses a diode laser as a power amplifier while preserving the spectral purity of a weak reference. The residual phase error is measured via optical heterodyne detection and canceled using feed-forward phase correction. The amplifier achieves up to 38 dB phase noise reduction over injection locking alone at Fourier frequencies above 1 kHz for injection ratios down to -57 dB. This approach enables amplification of low-power, low-n

Road Traffic Noise, Noise Difference Between Residential Facades, and Risk of Parkinson Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Transportation noise has been proposed as a risk factor for Parkinson disease (PD), but epidemiological evidence remains limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether long-term residential exposure to road traffic noise is associated with a higher risk of PD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a Danish nationwide prospective cohort study with follow-up from 2000 to 2017. Danish residents 40 years and older were eligible. Analyses were conducted from April to May 2026. EXPOSURES: Based on complete residential address history from 1990 onward, 10-year time-w

When "noise" isn't simply noise: deterministic postural drive during noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Age- and disease-related vestibular decline contributes to dizziness and postural instability, motivating interventions, such as noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS). nGVS is often applied at imperceptible amplitudes and interpreted through a stochastic resonance (SR) mechanism, but because galvanic stimulation directly modulates vestibular afferents, even imperceptible currents may deterministically influence balance. The present study tested whether low nGVS stimulus amplitudes (<1 mA), commonly used in stochastic resonance paradigms, directly drive postural behavior. Twenty healthy

Acoustic differences in tinnitus between noise-induced and non-noise-induced hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, the perception of sound without external stimuli, varies across hearing loss types. The present study compared the acoustic characteristics of tinnitus in patients with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and in those with hearing loss unrelated to noise exposure. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the acoustic characteristics of tinnitus in patients with noise-induced and non-noise-induced hearing loss. METHODS: A total of 403 patients with tinnitus were divided into those with noise-induced and non-noise-induced hearing loss. Patients were evaluated by pure tone audiometry

NoiseMol: A noise-robusted data augmentation via perturbing noise for molecular property prediction.

Simplified Molecular-Input Line-Entry System (SMILES) is one of a widely used molecular representation methods for molecular property prediction. We conjecture that all the characters in the SMILES string of a molecule are essential for making up the molecules, but most of them make little contribution to determining a particular property of the molecule. Therefore, we verified the conjecture in the pre-experiment. Motivated by the result, we propose to inject proper noisy information into the SMILES to augment the training data by increasing the diversity of the labeled molecules. To this end

Cochlear toughening, protection, and potentiation of noise-induced trauma by non-Gaussian noise.

An interrupted noise exposure of sufficient intensity, presented on a daily repeating cycle, produces a threshold shift (TS) following the first day of exposure. TSs measured on subsequent days of the exposure sequence have been shown to decrease relative to the initial TS. This reduction of TS, despite the continuing daily exposure regime, has been called a cochlear toughening effect and the exposures referred to as toughening exposures. Four groups of chinchillas were exposed to one of four different noises presented on an interrupted (6 h/day for 20 days) or noninterrupted (24 h/day for 5 d

Increased noise severity limits potentiation of noise induced hearing loss by carbon monoxide.

This study evaluates the influence of noise intensity and duration on auditory dysfunction due to simultaneous exposure to noise and carbon monoxide (CO). Previous studies have demonstrated that CO potentiates noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is not known whether auditory dysfunction due to combined exposure parallels impairment due to noise alone. Based on the 5 dB exchange rate between noise intensity and exposure doubling time, equivalent noise exposure conditions were used. Long Evans hooded rats were divided into groups that received noise alone (95, 100 and 105 dB SPL), and noise pl

Teratogenic effects of noise and cadmium in mice: does noise have teratogenic potential?

The teratogenicity of combined exposure to noise and cadmium was studied in mice. ICR mice were exposed to a wide octave-band of noise at 100 dB(C) for 6 h on d 7 of pregnancy in one of two ways: continuous exposure or intermittent (15 min on/15 min off). Cadmium sulfate at 1 or 2 mg/kg was intraperitoneally injected on d 7 of pregnancy. Four groups were exposed to both cadmium and noise. On d 18 of pregnancy, fetuses were examined for external and skeletal malformations. Another experiment was performed with two other patterns of noise exposure: continuous exposure for 3 h, and intermittent e

Noise annoyance with regard to neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and personality variables.

To evaluate the relation between annoyance to environmental noise, general neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and other individual characteristics, experiments were undertaken in which 93 subjects assessed their subjective annoyance after exposure to noise under laboratory conditions. Evaluations were made of the discomfort threshold for pulsating sound, the light discomfort, and heat and cold discomfort. The heart rate and discomfort after exposure to a series of impulse noises was also determined. Subjective noise sensitivity, attitudes to noise, mood and personalit

Impulse noise and continuous noise of equivalent frequency spectrum and total sound energy.

It has been proposed that impulse noise and continuous noise affect the inner ear differently and investigations have found impulse noise to be harmful to both the inner hair cells and the outer hair cells. Scanning electron microscopy and non-standard methods for statistical analysis have facilitated the evaluation of different types of morphological changes after exposure to various kinds of noise. Morphological differences were compared in groups of guinea pigs exposed to either impulse noise or continuous noise of equivalent duration, spectral content and energy. Functionally, the groups a

Decision trees and labeling of low noise pavements as support for noise action plans.

Low noise pavements (LNPs) are a market driven trend to mitigate the high road traffic noise exposure levels. Their improvement towards acoustic efficiency and durability over time is a challenge since these factors can conflict with road primary functions, such as safety. LNPs are not always the most cost-effective solution in health effects prevention. Whilst Green Public Procurement (GPP) highlighted the importance of reducing rolling noise emissions by introducing new regulations for new-layed LNPs, the fixed minimum requirements are not exhaustive. Generally, limits are set following the
