Boosting nutritional value: the role of iron fortification in meat and meat products.

Iron deficiency is a widespread nutritional problem affecting millions of people globally, leading to various health issues including anemia. Iron fortification of meat and meat products has emerged as an effective strategy to combat this issue. This review explores the process and benefits of iron fortification, focusing on the types of iron compounds suitable for fortification, such as ferrous sulfate and ferric pyrophosphate, their bioavailability, and their impact on the sensory and nutritional qualities of meat products. Technological challenges and solutions, including encapsulation, che

Predictive values of four nutritional indices for adverse outcomes in patients with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition, evaluated by nutritional indices, is reportedly related to a poor prognosis in patients with hypertension. However, clinical evidence on which index is more suitable for predicting a kidney prognosis is limited, and it has not been evaluated in hypertension. The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the predictive values of four nutritional indices: Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI); Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI); Triglycerides × Total cholesterol × Body weight Index (TCBI); and the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score. METHODS: A r

Nutritional value of a new source of cheese coproduct fed to weanling pigs.

Three experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that values for standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and metabolizable energy (ME) in a the cheese coproduct are greater than in fish meal or enzyme-treated soybean meal (ESBM). The second objective was to test the hypothesis that pigs fed a diet containing cheese coproduct will have growth performance that is not different from that of pigs fed other sources of protein. In experiment 1, eight ileal-cannulated barrows (11.0 ± 0.4 kg) were allotted to a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four diets and four per

The Prognostic Value and Treatment Strategies of Nutritional Status in Heart Failure Patients.

Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome caused by a variety of reasons leading to abnormal changes in the structure and/or function of the heart, with ventricular systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction, which is a serious manifestation or late stage of various heart diseases. The overall prognosis of patients is poor, and risk assessment of patients with HF is currently a hot topic of research due to the large heterogeneity of etiology, phenotype, and genetic background of HF patients. Besides, the nutritional level and status of HF patients are affected by various aspects. Patients with m

The Value of Nutritional Status in the Prognostic Analysis of Patients with AIDS-Related Lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have suggested that indexes of nutritional status, such as body mass index (BMI), serum albumin (ALB), serum pre-albumin (PA), and hemoglobin, may be used as risk factors for the prognosis of HIV or lymphoma. Therefore, this study aimed to retrospectively analyze and explore the value of nutritional status in the prognostic assessment of patients with AIDS-related lymphoma (ARL). METHODS: In this retrospective study, the clinical data of 69 patients with ARL were collected. All patients had a definite diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by pathological examination and me

The prognostic value of the controlling nutritional status score in patients with multiple myeloma.

The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score predicts the prognosis in several tumors. However, its prognostic significance in multiple myeloma (MM) remains unclear. The present study investigated the correlation between the CONUT score and the survival outcomes of MM patients. A total of 178 patients newly diagnosed with MM were retrospectively enrolled. Patients with a high CONUT score (≥5) had a significantly shorter median overall survival (OS) than those with a low CONUT score (≤4) (33 vs. 57 months, p < .001). In a multivariate analysis among patients with International Staging Syste

Millipedes as food for humans: their nutritional and possible antimalarial value-a first report.

The first record of millipedes (Diplopoda) being regularly used for food by humans (the Bobo people of Burkina Faso) is given, including information on how the millipedes are prepared. The species in question are Tymbodesmus falcatus (Karsch, 1881) and Sphenodesmus sheribongensis (Schiøtz, 1966) (Gomphodesmidae) and an unidentified species of Spirostreptidae. New information on the nutritional value of millipedes is provided; unsaturated fatty acids, calcium, and iron contents are particularly high. The millipedes' defensive secretions, hydrogen cyanide and benzoquinones, present a severe chal

The value of hepatobiliary scans in fasted patients receiving total parenteral nutrition.

Hepatobiliary scanning is considered to be a highly accurate method for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. False-positive scans (failure to visualize the gallbladder in the absence of cholecystitis) have been reported to occur in fasted patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). To determine the prevalence of false-positive scans in this patient population and identify factors that might be associated with scan outcome, hepatobiliary imaging was performed in fasted patients receiving TPN and without clinical evidence of acute cholecystitis. Gallbladder nonvisualization occurred in

[Diagnostic value of visual evoked potential in toxic and nutritional optic neuropathies].

BACKGROUND: Toxic/nutritional optic neuropathy (TON) is a diagnosis of exclusion after an extensive work-up. In cases of a non-contributory history or atypical presentation, formal diagnosis can sometimes be difficult and delay management. The goal of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of checkerboard visual evoked potentials (VEP) for toxic/nutritional optic neuropathy. The working hypothesis was that, in TON, VEPs are more affected than best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). We assumed that, for BCVA ≥ 1/20 and ≥ 2/10, the 60' and 15' checkerboard VEP responses would be respective

The Clinical Value of Nutritional Care before and during Active Cancer Treatment.

Malnutrition and muscle wasting are frequently reported in cancer patients, either linked to the tumor itself or caused by oncologic therapies. Understanding the value of nutritional care during cancer treatment remains crucial. In fact, cancer-associated sarcopenia plays a key role in determining higher rates of morbidity, mortality, treatment-induced toxicities, prolonged hospitalizations and reduced adherence to anticancer treatment, worsening quality of life and survival. Planning baseline screening to intercept nutritional troubles earlier, organizing timely reassessments, and providing a

Enteral nutrition as a primary therapy for intestinal lymphangiectasia: value of elemental diet and polymeric diet compared with total parenteral nutrition.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a rare disease requiring oral fat restriction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of enteral nutrition compared to that of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). We retrospectively reviewed nine patients with IL presenting with protein-losing enteropathy. Of these, seven patients not responding to a low-fat diet were treated with elemental diet (ED), polymeric diet (PD) containing medium-chain triglycerides, or TPN. Improvement in serum total protein was observed in two of three on ED and in one of two on PD, compared with three of three on TPN. E

Value of prognostic nutritional index for survival prediction in trans-catheter aortic valve replacement compared to other common nutritional indexes.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status predicts outcomes after TAVR. Predictive value of Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) was investigated in patients undergoing TAVR, and compared to other nutritional indexes. METHODS: A cohort of 114 patients undergoing TAVR in a high-volume centre was studied. A prospective 1-year follow-up was completed. PNI was estimated as follows: (10 × serum albumin[g/dl])+(0.005 × total lymphocytes [1000/μl]). One-year survival was compared in patients with PNI above vs below median; Kaplan-Meier curves were created. A multivariate analysis was used to assess predictive va
