Associated postmortem dental findings as an aid to personal identification.

The use of the unique features of the human dentition to aid in personal identification is well accepted within the forensic field. Indeed, despite advances in DNA and other identification methodologies, comparative dental identifications still play a major role in identifying the victims of violence, disaster or other misfortune. The classic comparative dental identification employs the use of postmortem and antemortem dental records (principally written notes and radiographs) to determine similarities and exclude discrepancies. In many cases the tentative identification of the individual is

Presbyopia and the dentist: the effect of age on clinical vision.

Vision is extremely important in dentistry where many clinical tasks requiring fine discrimination are performed. Presbyopia, an inability to focus sharply on near objects, affects all dentists in the later years of their practising lives and may have adverse effects on the practice of dentistry. This study examined the visual acuity of 172 practising dentists using a reduced Snellen chart imaged at 25 cm and 33 cm. Twenty-seven per cent failed the near vision test, having acuity of less than 6/9 at 25 cm, while 18 per cent had acuity of less than 6/7.5 at 33 cm; 96 per cent of those who faile

Sources of dentists' stress.

Almost 1,000 American dentists attending the 1982 Association annual meeting completed a self-administered questionnaire on sources of stress in dental practice. Most respondents identified dentistry as more stressful than other occupations. However, most believed that other dentists were under more stress than themselves. Dentists use a variety of ways to cope with their stress but a fourth report they do nothing. The stressors particularly noted included falling behind schedule, striving for technical perfection, causing pain or anxiety in patients, canceled or late appointments, and lack of

Pleural plaques in dentists from occupational asbestos exposure: a report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: White asbestos (chrysotile) has been used in dentistry since 1930 when it was introduced as a lining material for casting rings. METHODS: All three patients presented with pleural plaques on chest X-rays as well as on CT-scans. They were working as dentists for 35-45 years. Under the instructions of the first dentist we represented precisely the whole process of manipulating a kind of paper that contained asbestos. In order to measure asbestos fibers concentration we used the membrane filter method and phase contrast optical microscopy. Dry asbestos sheets were scanned with x-ray

Repetitive motion hand disorders.

The clinical management of cumulative trauma disorder is based upon the identification and treatment of individual component pathologies and, frequently, referral to a knowledgeable occupational therapist with an understanding of ergonomic behavioral, postural, and workspace modification. Most commonly these individual pathologic entities are carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and De Quervain's tenosynovitis. In this article, the anatomy, diagnosis, and treatment of each of these disorders will be considered separately. In addition, since these clinical entities a

[Cutaneous and mucosal reactions to dental materials].

The concentration of substances released by dental materials is usually too low to cause systemic-toxic effects, but there is the potential to induce dermatoses in especially dentists as well as mucositis in mainly dental patients. The cytotoxic irritative and allergic diseases are successively described categorized according to their pathogenesis. The identification of the diseases, which often have a similar appearance, depends on history-taking and patch testing. Non-dental sensitization is of diagnostic importance.

Contact dermatitis caused by 2-HEMA and GM dentin primer solutions applied to guinea pigs and humans.

The purposes of this study were to examine whether 2-HEMA, GM, and methacrylic acid cause contact dermatitis, and to determine the optimum concentrations of these primers for sensitization and challenge in guinea pigs. A sensitizing concentration of 0.2% 2-HEMA resulted in strong rubefaction and several vesiculopapules in response to the challenge, and a sensitizing concentration of 0.5% GM produced strong rubefaction at 24 hours. We also observed the development of contact dermatitis on human brachia in a closed-patch test. Skin that was treated with both 2-HEMA and GM clearly showed the onse
