[Congenital pit of the optic disk in indocyanine green].

PURPOSE: Etiopathogeny of serous retinal detachment (SRD) in optic pits remains a mystery. Several hypotheses have been proposed that lead to different treatments based on the possible mechanisms which explain the occurrence of SRD. The literature data about fluorescein angiography mainly concern the angiographic aspects of the optic pit itself, and seldom the SRD. We have examined these fluorescein angiographic aspects of the SRD. Indocyanine cardiogreen video-angiography gives new information which question the last etiologic hypothesis. METHODS: Nine patients underwent a fluorescein angiog

Clinical identification of optic disk vascular alteration in glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Several characteristic vascular changes can be observed in the glaucomatous eyes, including changes in the vessel configuration and caliber, presence of collateral vessel on disk, and disk hemorrhage. PURPOSE: This video describes characteristic vascular changes in the optic nerve head, which can be observed on clinical examination in the glaucomatous eyes, and useful teaching points to identify the same. SYNOPSIS: In glaucoma, as the optic cup enlarges, the normal pattern and course of retinal vessels on the optic disk are altered and show characteristic changes. Identification …

[Optic Disk Drusen: Historical and Up-To-Date Aspects].

Optic disc drusen are an important differential diagnosis in the diagnostic evaluation of a prominent optic nerve head. Drusen of the optic disc occur in 0.34 to 2.4 % of human individuals and manifest themselves bilaterally in three of four cases. Drusen are found six times more often within histological sections than on funduscopic examination. It is known that optic disc drusen can occur in familial clusters without any other pathological ophthalmic findings. They can also be associated with retinitis pigmentosa, or with the Joubert or Alagille syndromes. Non-invasive diagnostic tools inclu

Occlusive vasculitis and optic disk neovascularization associated with neuroretinitis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of neuroretinitis associated with ischemic nasal branch retinal vein occlusion, periphlebitis, and neovascularization of the optic disk. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 32-year-old man presented with a typical image of neuroretinitis, retinal hemorrhages and sheathing of the retinal veins in the nasal retina. His left hand had been bitten by a kitten 8 weeks before. Serology for Bartonella henselae was negative. On the 6th week of follow-up, optic disk neovascularization developed, which required retinal photocoagulation. Photocoagulation was performed again at the…

Optic disk appearance in advanced age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE: To describe and quantify the appearance of the optic disk in patients with advanced age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). DESIGN: Retrospective comparative study. METHODS: A total of 316 charts were reviewed. From these, 45 subjects with advanced ARMD (defined as geographic atrophy or disciform scar) in at least one eye were enrolled. Patients with glaucoma or glaucoma visual field defects were excluded. The probability of glaucomatous optic nerve damage was scored by evaluation of stereoscopic optic disk photographs in a masked fashion, according to a predefined evaluation scale…

Unilateral and asymmetric optic disk swelling with intracranial abnormalities.

Although asymmetric or unilateral optic disk swelling is unusual in patients with increased intracranial pressure, we treated three such patients. Two (a 31-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both of whom were overweight) had benign intracranial hypertension. The third patient (a 64-year-old man) had a posterior fossa mass that was later discovered to be an anaplastic astrocytoma. Thus, unilateral optic disk edema does not exclude intracranial abnormalities. The papilledema may be unilateral rather than bilateral because of an anomaly of the optic nerve sheath or a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Absence of age-related optic disk changes in young children with optic nerve hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the ratio of optic disk diameter to disk-to-macula distance (DD/DM) in children with optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) changes over time. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen subjects (29 eyes) enrolled in a prospective registry study on ONH had fundus photography performed under the age of 24 months and again at 60 months. Using the ratio of the DD/DM method, the relative size of the optic disk was assessed twice for each photo by one masked expert examiner to determine whether any change in relative disk size occurred over time. RESULTS: There was no change in relative op…
