Experimental study of an implantable fiber-optic microphone on human cadavers.

In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study about a novel fiber optical vibrometer, aimed to be used as a totally implantable fiber-optic microphone for hearing aids. The sensor head, implanted inside the human cadaver middle ear, detects the amplitude of the incus vibrations, which are produced by an external acoustical source. The probe beam of coherent vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) radiation is directed to the incus and the phase-modulated reflected beam is captured and demodulated. The problem of interferometric fading was solved using two quasi-quadratu

Dual-wavelength fiber-optic technique to assist needle cricothyroidotomy.

The traditional needle cricothyroidotomy procedure is performed blindly without any medical equipment. Complications including posterior tracheal wall perforation, accidental vessel puncture, and missed tracheal puncture are reported. Therefore, we proposed a dual-wavelength fiber-optic technique based on the technique of near-infrared spectroscopy to assist operators performing needle cricothyroidotomy in a swine model. We embedded optical fibers in a 16-gauge intravenous needle catheter. Real-time data were displayed on an oscilloscope, and we used the program to analyze the data immediately

Acquired myelinated nerve fibers in association with optic disk drusen.

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are a well-recognized anomaly of the ocular fundus associated with many ocular and systemic conditions. Myelination is almost always congenital and stable, but progression has been documented in rare cases. Optic disk drusen are the result of a degenerative process at the optic nerve head and are often found incidentally on ophthalmologic examination. To our knowledge, optic disk drusen have only been reported once in association with acquired and progressive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. We present 2 such cases and consider the implications for the pathogene

Optical D-fiber-based volatile organic compound sensor.

A fiber-optic sensor used to detect volatile organic compounds is described. The sensor consists of a single-mode D-fiber with a 2.5 microm polydimethylsiloxane layer. The layer is applied to the fiber flat after removal of a section of the fiber's cladding to increase evanescent interaction of the light with the layer. Absorption of volatile organic compounds into the polymer alters the refractive index of the layer, resulting in a birefringent change of the fiber. This change is observed as a shift in polarization of the light carried by the fiber. The sensor has a short length of 3 cm and a

Effects of age on nerve fibers in the rhesus monkey optic nerve.

During normal aging there is a reduction in white matter volume in the cerebral hemispheres and structural abnormalities in myelin in some parts of the central nervous system, but whether nerve fibers are lost with age and whether the myelin changes are ubiquitous is not known. Studying the optic nerve, which is a circumscribed bundle of nerve fibers, offers an opportunity to gain further insight into the effects of normal aging on white matter. The present study examined the optic nerves from young (4-10 years) and old (27-33 years) rhesus monkeys using light and electron microscopy. These ne

A fiber-optic sensor system for monitoring chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants.

We have developed and field-tested a fiber-optic chemical sensor system for use in environmental monitoring and remediation. The system detects chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants with colorimetry, and is based on an irreversible chemical reaction between the target compound and a specific reagent. The reaction products are detected by their absorption at 560 nm and can be monitored remotely with optical fibers. Continuous measurements are made possible by renewing the reagent from a reservoir with a miniature pumping system. The sensor has been evaluated against gas chromatography standards an

Detecting silent whales using seabed fiber-optic cables.

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has emerged as a powerful tool for passive whale monitoring, enabling both the detection of vocalizations and the simultaneous tracking of multiple individuals. However, a fundamental limitation of passive acoustic monitoring is that most methods rely on acoustic data, which is only available when whales vocalize. This clearly demonstrates the need for new sensing methods that can detect silent whales. In this paper, we detect hydrodynamic pressure and velocity fields in the low-frequency DAS data induced by a whale's motion and develop methods to analyze the

Fiber-optic fluorescence reader for multiplex point-of-care monitoring.

We present a compact fiber-optic fluorescence reader for quantitative, multiplex point-of-care (PoC) analysis of lateral flow assays (LFAs). The system uses a dual-port fiber Bragg grating (FBG) spectrometer for spectral discrimination and interchangeable excitation sources covering 400-800 nm to support multiple fluorophores. As a proof of principle, we quantified piperacillin in human serum with an europium nanoparticle-based competitive LFA, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 12.9 mg/L and a dynamic range of 10-500 mg/L. The reader-LFA system showed strong agreement with a laboratory r

Tissue-adhesive hydrogel optical fiber for peripheral optogenetic neuromodulation.

While hydrogel optical fibers hold promises for visceral peripheral optogenetics, their utility is limited by poor tissue adhesion, unstable light delivery, and micromisplacement under physiological motion, leading to off-target illumination. To address these challenges, we developed tissue-adhesive hydrogel optical fibers (TAHOFs) integrating a poly(HEMA) light-guiding core (ncore = 1.429 ± 0.004) with a bioadhesive cladding (ncladding = 1.343 ± 0.002), achieving dual functionality through refractive index contrast (Δn = 0.086) and robust tissue integration (11.5 ± 1.8 kPa). This architecture

Dissolved oxygen sensing characteristics in blood by hydrogel optical fiber.

In this paper, a hydrogel fiber optic sensing probe with a fluorescence indicator doped in the core is proposed for dissolved oxygen detection in blood. The hydrogel fiber was made by photocrosslinking with a core-cladding structure made from PEGDA precursor solutions with different concentrations. By changing the concentration of the fluorescent indicator doped in the core of the hydrogel optical fiber and changing the length of the fiber and the thickness of the cladding, the sensing performance of the fiber for dissolved oxygen was optimized, and it was found that the effect of photobleachi

Resonant fiber-optic thermometry with high resolution and wide range.

We report a high-resolution and wide-range thermometer using a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FP) combined with beat frequency interrogation. Two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are locked to the FBG-FP sensing head and a hydrogen cyanide H13C14N (HCN) gas cell, respectively, both using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. The light beams from two lasers are brought together to interfere on a photodetector producing a beat frequency signal which provides a measure of the temperature change. Our sensor exhibits a dynamic range of ∼109 °C, a high resolution of 2×10-4 °C with an

Supercontinuum generation in a carbon disulfide core microstructured optical fiber.

We demonstrate supercontinuum generation in a liquid-core microstructured optical fiber using carbon disulfide as the core material. The fiber provides a specific dispersion landscape with a zero-dispersion wavelength approaching the telecommunication domain where the corresponding capillary-type counterpart shows unsuitable dispersion properties for soliton fission. The experiments were conducted using two pump lasers with different pulse duration (30 fs and 90 fs) giving rise to different non-instantaneous contributions of carbon disulfide in each case. The presented results demonstrate an e

External Corrosion Detection of Oil Pipelines Using Fiber Optics.

Oil flowlines, the first "pipeline" system connected to the wellhead, are pipelines that are 5 to 30.5 cm (two to twelve inches) in diameter, most susceptible to corrosion, and very difficult to inspect. Herein, an external corrosion detection sensor for oil and gas pipelines, consisting of a semicircular plastic strip, a flat dog-bone-shaped sacrificial metal plate made out of the same pipeline material, and an optical fiber with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, is described. In the actual application, multiple FBG optical fibers are attached to an oil and gas pipeline using straps or strip

An evaluation of in-office flexible fiber-optic biopsies for laryngopharyngeal lesions.

BACKGROUND: Operative endoscopy and flexible fiber-optic in-office tissue biopsy are common techniques to assess suspicious laryngopharyngeal lesions. METHODS: The primary outcome was the delay to the initiation of treatment. Secondary outcomes were delay to biopsy, histopathological diagnosis, and assessment at a multidisciplinary oncology clinic. A retrospective analysis was performed to assess the relative delays between these approaches to biopsy of laryngopharyngeal lesions. RESULTS: There were 114 patients in the study cohort; 44 in-office and 70 operative endoscopic biopsies). The mea

Identification of Histophilus somni by a nanomaterial optical fiber biosensor assay.

Histophilus somni is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for respiratory and systemic diseases of cattle and sheep. Rapid and accurate detection of H. somni is essential to distinguish H. somni from other potential pathogens for proper control and treatment of infections. Nanomaterial optical fiber biosensors (NOFS) recognize analyte interactions, such as DNA hybridization, with high specificity and sensitivity, and were applied to detect H. somni DNA in culture and clinical samples. An ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) film was fabricated on a long-period grating optical fiber, and a b

Fiber-optic Raman spectroscopy for in vivo diagnosis of gastric dysplasia.

This study aims to assess the clinical utility of a rapid fiber-optic Raman spectroscopy technique developed for enhancing in vivo diagnosis of gastric precancer during endoscopic examination. We have developed a real-time fiber-optic Raman spectroscopy system capable of simultaneously acquiring both fingerprint (FP) (i.e., 800-1800 cm(-1)) and high-wavenumber (HW) (i.e., 2800-3600 cm(-1)) Raman spectra from gastric tissue in vivo at endoscopy. A total of 5792 high-quality in vivo FP/HW Raman spectra (normal (n = 5160); dysplasia (n = 155), and adenocarcinoma (n = 477)) were acquired in real-t
