Early orthodontic treatment is an important means of preventing and treating dentofacial deformities during the period of growth and development. In this stage, children have great potential in growth and development, high adaptability of muscles and temporomandibular joint, and good responsiveness to orthodontic force. Therefore, orthodontic intervention and treatment in this stage can prevent and guide the normal growth and development of dentition, occlusion and maxillofacial complex. This article summarizes the commonly used orthodontic techniques and appliances in the mixed dentition, inc

A systematic review of the literature was performed regarding the clinical outcome (effectiveness) of bone anchorage devices in interceptive treatment for class III malocclusion. A search of Embase, PubMed and Web of Science databases yielded 285 papers. An additional two articles were retrieved through manual searching of the reference lists. After initial abstract selection, 32 potentially eligible articles were screened in detail, resulting in a final number of eight articles included in this review. Insufficient evidence was found regarding the effects of skeletal anchorage in interceptive

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession can be defined as the apical shift of the marginal gingiva from its normal position on the crown of the tooth to levels on the root surface beyond the cemento-enamel junction. The aetiology of this condition is multifactorial, but can result from a traumatic occlusion. The long-term prognosis of teeth with localised gingival recession can be uncertain. Successful management of these cases may involve either orthodontic or periodontal treatment in isolation or in combination.
AIM: To describe two patients in which localised gingival recession associated with ante

The purpose of this study conducted at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine is to investigate the possibility of limiting the development of an excessive vertical overbite and horizontal overjet during sleeping hours in young children prior to and during the eruption of the permanent incisors. A sample of 43 individuals, whose mean age was 6.17 years, wore a Preventive Eruption Guidance Appliance passively only while sleeping at night for 13 months (mean) to control the development of the overbite as the permanent incisors erupted and to correct the excessive overjet. The mean initial ov

Functional appliances are frequently used in the treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusions, either in isolation or, more commonly, before a course of fixed appliance therapy. Extensive speculation and investigation into the precise mode of action of these appliances has recently focused on their growth-restraining effect on the maxilla, their growth-enhancing effect on the mandible and dentoalveolar and soft tissue effects. The different types of functional appliances are described in this article, with emphasis placed on practitioners adopting a component approach to design. A checklist

Severe asymmetry in pre-adolescent children usually arises either from congenital anomalies, such as unilateral condylar hypoplasia, or as a result of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, condylar hyperplasia or early fracture of the mandible. Early surgical and orthodontic interceptive treatment of the asymmetry is important for normal development of the face and jaws.

Primary teeth play a critical role in the growth and development of a child. In addition to their role in esthetics, eating, speech, and to encourage normal function and resultant expected growth, the other main function of a primary tooth is to hold space for the permanent successor until it is ready to erupt. Space maintenance forms an integral part of preventive and interceptive orthodontics. After the premature loss of a tooth, not only do space maintainers maintain function and preserve arch length, they also maintain esthetics and eliminate any potential psychological damage a child coul

INTRODUCTION: Several orthodontic problems should already be treated at an early age to prevent the necessity of future complex and expensive procedures. Scientific evidence suggests that posterior crossbites, mild to moderate Class III, as well as certain Class II malocclusions, open bites and arch length discrepancies can benefit from simple, but efficient interceptive therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the existing evidence-based literature on early orthodontic treatment, and to illustrate its application and effectiveness by showcasing multiple clinical examples.
CONCLUSION: Early short-te

A modular, fixed-functional method has been described using a new generation of appliances that are smaller, more comfortable and more patient friendly, while gaining the advantages of a combined fixed-functional and postural therapy. The case has been made for the middle mixed dentition as the optimal starting time. Crowding, overbite and molar rotation are managed simply with a combined use of flexible lip bumpers, bite plane and sequential primary tooth extraction. In conclusion, Phase I Postural Therapy will be shown to have the following advantages: more biologically and patient friendly

Early correction of developing class III malocclusions remains a complex challenge. Treatment approaches for these young patients have been directed at growth modification. Encouraging outcomes have been reported with the use of Class III functional appliances including reverse twin block (RTB) appliance. The present paper tries to provide an insight into RTB appliance used for successful interceptive management of developing class III malocclusion in two children. RTBs were fabricated with bite registered in the position of maximum possible retrusion of mandible with interincisal clearance of

OBJECTIVES: Mouth breathing is a condition that alters normal skeletal and dental development while also affecting the surrounding orofacial muscles. Electromyography (EMG) provides an objective method to assess these muscular changes. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of the buccinator, orbicularis oris, mentalis, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius muscles in mouth breathers before and after interceptive therapy and compare these findings with those of nasal breathers.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Children aged 6 to 12 years were selected based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and categorize

The increasing demand for more aesthetic/comfortable orthodontic alternatives fostered the utilization of clear aligners in recent years. However, the efficacy of clear aligners for treating complex malocclusions is often treated with scepticism. This case series aims to evaluate the predictability of the Invisalign® First system in moderate and severe cases requiring interceptive orthodontic treatments in mixed dentition. A total of 23 patients with 102 interceptive orthodontic malocclusion traits were selected for orthodontic treatment with Invisalign® First and were examined over 18 months

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the participation of pediatric dentistry in multidisciplinary cleft palate teams (CPTs) at advanced pediatric dental residency programs.
METHODS: A survey was sent to the directors of advanced pediatric dentistry programs across the United States.
RESULTS: Of the 60 (90%) surveys returned, 18% of the programs were university-based, 40% hospital-based, and 42% combined programs. Overall, 92% of the programs reported pediatric dentistry's participation in CPTs. Orthodontics, plastic surgery, oral surgery, otolaryngology, and speech therapy

The interceptive orthodontic treatment of patients with complex dentofacial abnormalities is frequently inefficient and produces less than ideal outcomes. Therefore, postponing therapy to a single-phase surgical-orthodontic approach might be considered a reasonable option. However, other relevant aspects of the patient's quality of life, such as possible psychosocial problems and functional impairments, should also be considered before deciding whether to intercept a severe dentofacial malocclusion while the patient is still growing, or wait and treat later. This case report describes the nons
