Possible role for glucagon in the control of Paget's disease of bone.

Paget's disease of bone is characterised by overactive osteoclasts that resorb bone at a higher rate than normal. Osteoblasts attempt to repair the damage by laying down new bone which in turn is resorbed leaving a chaotic pattern of lytic and dense sclerotic bone behind. Deformed bone enlarges, becomes vascularised, bends and fractures. No bone is exempt but the skull, pelvis, vertebrae and long bones are commonly affected. Pressure from pagetic bone impinges on the auditory, facial, optic, trigeminal nerves and the spinal cord, risking paraplegia or quadriplegia. Vascular complications inclu

Femoral fractures in Paget's disease.

Since the original description of osteitis deformans, the treatment of femoral fractures occurring in this disease process has been difficult. A retrospective study of 35 fractures treated over an 8-year period was undertaken to identify the factors that influenced the results. The fractures were classified according to four fracture patterns: subcapital, intertrochanteric, subtrochanteric, and shaft. Chart and radiographic analyses were then performed. The results identified subtrochanteric fractures, occurring in a somewhat younger population, to be the problem fracture. The other three frac…

Coincidence of Paget disease of bone and primary hyperparathyroidism.

The coincidence or association of some metabolic bone diseases is known although it occurs rarely. The authors present a very rare association of Paget's bone disease with primary hyperparathyroidism in a 65 year old male with overt Paget's disease of bone since 1985. For during five years the patient was treated symptomatically only. Later he developed a biochemical syndrome suspect from primary hyperparathyroidism with signs of preexisting Paget's disease of bone. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach is presented. After the removal of parathyroid adenoma, laboratory findings depicted rece

Changing Research Orientations in Paget's Disease of Bone: A Bibliometric Analysis.

IntroductionPaget's disease of bone (PDB) has long been studied as a condition characterized by disordered bone remodeling. In recent decades, research has increasingly incorporated molecular, genetic, and systemic perspectives, reflecting a broader understanding of the disease. Despite this apparent expansion, changes in the overall research orientation of the PDB field have not been systematically assessed at the field level.MethodsA bibliometric analysis was performed using PDB-related publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1999 and 2025. Publication trends, keyw

Rare association between ankylosing spondylitis and paget's disease: A case of pagetic vertebral ankylosis.

Paget's disease is a condition marked by abnormal bone remodeling, involving both excessive bone formation and destruction, predominantly in the elderly. Pagetic vertebral ankylosis is a rare manifestation, often associated with Paget's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. This form of acquired vertebral ankylosis is uncommon and occurs in cases with bone-bridging syndesmophytes or osteophytes. Here, we present a case of delayed diagnosis of Paget's disease in the lower vertebral column, progressing to cervicothoracic vertebral ankylosis secondary to an

Paget disease of bone. Diagnosis and indications for treatment.

BACKGROUND: Paget disease was first described in 1877 by Sir James Paget. It is a focal disorder of bone remodelling, involving increased bone resorption and formation. The aetiology is uncertain but both environmental and genetic factors are thought to be involved in pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of Paget disease. DISCUSSION: Paget disease is associated with musculoskeletal pain, significant disability and impaired quality of life. Complications include pathological fracture, arthritis in adjacent joints, hearing loss, othe

Paget's disease of the spine and its management.

A review of the literature was conducted to study the pathomechanics by which Paget's Disease of bone (PD) alters the spinal structures that result in distinct spinal pathologic entities such as pagetic spinal arthritis, spinal stenosis, and other pathologies, and to assess the best treatment options and available drugs. The spine is the second most commonly affected site with PD. About one-third of patients with spinal involvement exhibit symptoms of clinical stenosis. In only 12-24% of patients with PD of the spine is back pain attributed solely to PD, while in the majority of patients back

The neurologic complications of Paget's disease.

Paget's disease of bone is associated with involvement of the central and peripheral nervous system. The brain, spinal cord, cauda equina, spinal roots, and cranial nerves can be affected in Paget's disease due to their anatomic relationship to bone. Neurologic syndromes are uncommon but include headache, dementia, brain stem and cerebellar dysfunction, cranial neuropathies, myelopathy, cauda equina syndrome, and radiculopathies. The central complications result from pagetic involvement of the skull. Expansion of diseased bone can result in compression of cranial nerves as they exit their bony
