Back pain Knowledge and beliefs Survey (BacKS): development and assessment of measurement properties.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to assess people's knowledge and beliefs about low back pain. METHODS: This study followed the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments guidelines. An 18-item preliminary version of the Back pain Knowledge and beliefs Survey (BacKS) was generated based on evidence-based key messages and current clinical guidelines for low back pain. Four items were added following input from three consumers and seven experts. Focus groups (n=9) confirmed content validity. The 22-item version w

Exercise-induced pain within endurance exercise settings: Definitions, measurement, mechanisms and potential interventions.

Pain can be defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with or resembling that associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Though consistent with this definition, different types of pain result in different behavioural and psychophysiological responses. For example, the transient, non-threatening, acute muscle pain element of exercise-induced pain (EIP) is entirely different from other pain types like delayed onset muscle soreness, muscular injury or chronic pain. However, studies often conflate the definitions or assume parity between distinct pain types. Cons

Measurement of acute pain in infants: a review of behavioral and physiological variables.

BACKGROUND: The use of non-validated pain measurement tools to assess infant pain represents a serious iatrogenic threat to the developing neonatal nervous system. One partial explanation for this practice may be the contradictory empirical data from studies that use newborn pain management tools constructed for infants of different developmental stages or exposed to different environmental stressors. PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the evidence regarding the physiologic and behavioral variables that accurately assess and measure acute pain response in infants. METHODOLOGY…

Situational versus dispositional measurement of catastrophizing: associations with pain responses in multiple samples.

UNLABELLED: Catastrophizing is widely recognized as an important risk factor for adverse pain-related outcomes. However, questions remain surrounding the details of its assessment. In particular, recent laboratory studies suggest that evaluation of "situational" catastrophizing (ie, catastrophizing measured during or directly after the administration of noxious stimulation) may provide information distinct from that obtained by standard, or "dispositional" measures, which assess individuals' recall of catastrophizing in daily life. However, comparatively little research has systematically inve

Reliability and standard error of measurement of pressure pain thresholds at articular landmarks.

BACKGROUND: Pressure pain threshold (PPT) testing is a widely used quantitative sensory testing method to assess mechanical pain sensitivity. While reference values for PPT at articular-/joint-related and osseous landmarks are available, data on measurement reliability remain limited. This study aimed to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of PPT measurements and to report the standard error of measurement (SEM) for joint PPT. METHODS: Healthy participants aged 18-40 years were included in a two-part study. In Part A (N = 40), intra-rater reliability was assessed through three re

Functional Evaluation Using Inertial Measurement of Back School Therapy in Lower Back Pain.

Lower back pain is an extremely common health problem and globally causes more disability than any other condition. Among other rehabilitation approaches, back schools are interventions comprising both an educational component and exercises. Normally, the main outcome evaluated is pain reduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate not only the efficacy of back school therapy in reducing pain, but also the functional improvement. Patients with lower back pain were clinically and functionally evaluated; in particular, the timed "up and go" test with inertial movement sensor was studied before

Measurement of pain-like response to various NICU stimulants for high-risk infants.

BACKGROUND: Infants during neonatal intensive care are invariably exposed to various procedural and environmental stimuli in which the pain-like responses may vary depending on the nature of the stimuli and the infants' condition. AIM: To examine firstly the pain-like responses to frequent stimulants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) using CRIES, FLACC and PIPP, and secondly the clinical feasibility and validity of using these pain measurements for high-risk infants. STUDY DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: In a correlational study of 110 premature infants receiving neonatal intensive care, the p…

An analysis of the relevance of the Brief Pain Inventory interference items for measuring pain-related disability.

The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) pain interference subscale has been used as a measure of pain-related disability, a core outcome domain in the pain field. However, the pain interference subscale captures a broad range of experiences, and some items overlap with measures of distinct constructs. This overlap may inflate estimates in predictive studies and limits the precision with which treatment effects can be evaluated. To prompt reflection on appropriate use of the BPI pain interference items, this study investigated their relevance for assessing 'pain-related disability'. Participants with an

Different Scale, Different Pain? Discordant Pain Measurements After Surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) has been described as one of the worst pains known to humankind. However, pain severity in TN has been measured using several different scales, resulting in difficulty comparing illness burden and response to TN surgery across studies. We examined the degree of concordance between standardized scales evaluating pain severity in a cohort of patients undergoing surgery for TN. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated 39 surgical TN patients with 3 pain measurement instruments: a Visual Analog Pain Scale, the Brief Pain Inventory-Facial (BPI-F) Pa…

Developing a Measure to Quantify Ocular Pain Postoperatively: The Adaptation of the Ocular Pain Assessment Survey.

PURPOSE: Since quantification and communication of ocular pain is important for a healthier patient follow-up and postoperative guidance, reliable measures like the Ophthalmic Pain Assessment Survey (OPAS) are needed to assess the outcome and management of different operations. To address that need, we carried out the adaptation of OPAS into Turkish to reach different age groups and backgrounds, widening the use of OPAS on patients who underwent an ophthalmic operation. METHODS: We used back-translation method and achieved cultural adaptation through content validity scoring by 5 independent

A new measure to assess pain in people with haemophilia: The Multidimensional Haemophilia Pain Questionnaire (MHPQ).

People with haemophilia (PWH) experience acute pain during joint bleeds and might develop chronic pain due to joint degeneration. However, there is a lack of standardized measures to comprehensively assess pain in PWH. This study aimed to develop a multidimensional questionnaire for haemophilia-related pain, the Multidimensional Haemophilia Pain Questionnaire (MHPQ), and to present initial validation data among adults. The questionnaire distinguishes between acute/chronic pain and queries about pain locations, duration, frequency, triggering factors, intensity, interference, strategies, special

Measuring participation in patients with chronic back pain-the 5-Item Pain Disability Index.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Of the three broad outcome domains of body functions and structures, activities, and participation (eg, engaging in valued social roles) outlined in the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), it has been argued that participation is the most important to individuals, particularly those with chronic health problems. Yet, participation is not commonly measured in back pain research. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the construct validity of a modified 5-Item Pain Disability Index (PDI) scor

Cerebral responses to pain in patients with atypical facial pain measured by positron emission tomography.

The localised PET cerebral correlates of the painful experience in the normal human brain have previously been demonstrated. This study examined whether these responses are different in patients with chronic atypical facial pain. The regional cerebral responses to non-painful and painful thermal stimuli in six female patients with atypical facial pain and six matched female controls were studied by taking serial measurements of regional blood flow by PET. Both groups displayed highly significant differences in responses to painful heat compared with non-painful heat in the thalamus, anterior c
