RATIONALE: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, being the most prevalent malignant neoplasm among salivary gland tumors, represents the leading incidence rate among primary parotid malignancies. This pathological entity predominantly affects young and middle-aged females, typically presenting as a painless parotid mass. Due to its variable disease progression and nonspecific clinical manifestations, preoperative misdiagnosis as a benign tumor is frequently encountered. However, when parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma progresses to involve the jugular foramen region, a complex anatomica

A variety of non-neoplastic diseases and benign and malignant lesions may involve parotid glands. In clinical practice, effective diagnosis is crucial to ensure proper treatment and achieve a good therapeutic effect. Unclear anamnesis and short medical history are factors that make diagnosis difficult, especially when cancer should be excluded. We present a case series of four patients who reported to the outpatient clinic with a unilateral nodule in the parotid region. The clinical presentation prevented an unequivocal diagnosis. The suspicion of a neoplastic disease resulted in profound diag…

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the one-stage reconstruction of primary or secondary neoplastic defects in the parotid masseter area.
METHODS: Fifty-eight cases of soft tissue defects reconstruction caused by tumors in the parotid masseter area from 2014 to 2018 were analyzed. The minimum area of defect was 4 cm × 5 cm, and the maximum area was 12 cm × 12 cm. According to the characteristics of the defect and the condition of the patient, the individualized repair method was adopted. Among them, 40 cases were repaired with adjacent flaps, 6 cases with pectoralis major

Synovial sarcoma involving the head is rare, and data on the clinicopathologic characteristics of such tumors are scant. In this study, we examined 36 synovial sarcomas of the head excluding tumors in the oral cavity, sinonasal tract, submandibular area, neck, and intracranial space. There were 19 men and 17 women with a mean age of 35 years (range: 4 to 85 y). There was a marked predilection for the parotid (n=14) and temporal regions (n=9), and cheek (n=4). Other locations included mastoid area (n=2), infratemporal fossa (n=2), and one each from the supra-auricular scalp, maxillary, submaxil

PURPOSE: Xerostomia is one of the most likely late toxic effects of radiotherapy treatment in patients with head-and-neck cancers. Modern treatment techniques can incorporate knowledge of complication risk into treatment plans. To this end, the authors attempt to quantify the regional radiotherapy dose-dependence of salivary output loss and recovery in a prospective study.
METHODS: Salivary output was collected from patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment for head-and-neck cancers at the BC Cancer Agency between February 2008 and May 2013. Regional dose-dependence (i.e., dose susceptibilit

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous melanoma is on the rise in the United States, and the head and neck region is the primary site in 20% of patients. Lymph node status is the best indicator of prognosis for melanoma. In the head and neck, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy presents particular challenges, with the parotid region posing difficulties that include locating the lymph nodes, less frequent visualization of blue dye, and the possibility of higher morbidity because of the proximity of lymph nodes to important neurovascular structures. Surgical approaches to the SLN dissection in the parotid region …

Facial nerve schwannomas arising in the accessory parotid gland region are extremely rare, and paediatric cases have not been reported previously. We present the case of a girl in middle childhood who developed a painless, gradually enlarging mass in the mid-cheek area. Radiologic evaluation revealed a well-defined lesion with imaging features suggestive of a benign neoplasm. A transoral surgical approach was chosen to avoid cutaneous scarring and minimise surgical morbidity. Complete excision was achieved without injury to the facial nerve or Stensen's duct, and histopathology revealed a beni

The present study was performed on 12 heads of donkey's cadavers of both sexes for different anatomic techniques and on 20 live adult donkeys for ultrasonographic approaches of local anesthetic techniques. The aim was to achieve safe desensitization of the ear canal and tympanic membrane in addition to measuring different parameters of the structures occupying the infra-auricular parotid region. The internal auricular nerve was divided into two fine branches and constituting, at its origin, a characteristic V-shape with the caudal auricular nerve. The styloid process of auricular cartilage was…

PURPOSE: To discuss the implications of three examples of periparotid recurrence after definitive intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for head and neck cancer (HNC).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We present 3 patients with HNC who underwent definitive IMRT with concurrent chemotherapy and later had treatment failure in or near a spared parotid gland. Two patients had bilateral multilevel nodal disease, and all had Level II nodal disease ipsilateral to the site of recurrence. The patients were treated using dose-painting IMRT with a dose of 70 Gy to the gross tumor volume and 59.4 Gy or 54 Gy to

PURPOSE: Masses in the accessory parotid gland (APG) region are clinically rare and their management can lead to conflicts between the need for tumor resection and facial cosmesis. The aim of this study was to analyze the pathological classifications and management of APG lesions in our hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 1993 to March 2017, 130 patients with primary tumors in the APG region who underwent surgical treatment were enrolled. Follow-up surveys after surgery were then carried out.
RESULTS: Among the 130 patients, 53.8% of lesions were benign (n = 70), 23.8% were maligna

INTRODUCTION: New surgical methods have enabled resection of previously in-operable tumours in the region of the parotid gland and ear. This has translated to deeper target volumes being treated with adjuvant radiotherapy. Due to the limitations of existing conformal techniques, alternative planning approaches are required to cover the target volume with appropriate sparing of adjacent critical structures. Although intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) may be able to achieve these goals compared with the existing conformal method, a new orbital sparing radiation therapy (OSRaT) techniqu
