Rheumatologic manifestations of parvovirus B19 infection is a recent individualization. They are rather frequent and varied and meet at the young adult's. Generally, it is responsible for acute, bilateral and symmetrical arthritis, usually involving distal joints and sometimes associated to signs caused by viral infections. Prolonged articular forms were discribed but are rare being able to sometimes feign a nocive rheumatoid arthritis because of their clinical aspect and of a seropositivity. Axial manifestations were also reported. The diagnosis of the recent infection by the parvovirus B19 c…

Human parvovirus B19 infections may cause a widespread benign and self-limiting disease in children and adults, known as erythema infectiosum or fifth disease. A variety of further manifestations are associated with the infection such as arthralgias, arthritis, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, anemia and vasculitis, spontaneous abortion and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. Both in children and adults parvovirus B19 infections have been frequently implicated as a cause or trigger of various forms of autoimmune diseases affecting joints, connective tissue and large and small vessels. In additi…

Parvovirus B19, a member of the Erythrovirus genus, is the only member of the Parvoviridae family known to be pathogenic in humans. Erythroviruses are so named because of their tropism and selective replication in erythroid progenitor cells. Haematological consequences of B19 infection arise due to a direct cytotoxic effect on erythroid progenitors in bone marrow with interruption of erythrocyte production. In addition, the physiology of host haematopoiesis and competence of the immune response each determines clinical manifestations of B19 infection: in individuals with underlying haemolytic …

Parvovirus B19 is a common source of infection with a seroprevalence of 60-70 per cent in the adult population. The most common manifestation is erythema infectiosum ("fifth disease"), with exanthem, fever and upper airway symptoms in children. The infection can give rise to a multifaceted clinical picture and is probably underdiagnosed, particularly in risk groups (individuals with haemolytic anaemia or immunosuppression, and fetuses). Serological diagnosis can now be complemented with the demonstration of viral DNA using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test in various body fluids, or tis…

Human parvovirus B19 is an emerging DNA virus. B19 infection is common and widespread. Major manifestations of B19 infection are transient aplastic crisis, erythema infectiosum, hydrops fetalis, acute and chronic rheumatoid-like arthropathy, and, in the immunocompromised host, chronic or recurrent bone marrow suppression. A number of less common manifestations of B19 infection include various rash illnesses, neuropathies, and acute fulminant liver failure. Of rheumatologic interest, B19 infection must be differentiated from early presentation of more classic erosive rheumatoid arthritis and, i…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether parvovirus B19 infection is associated with Behçet's disease (BD).
METHODS: Serum samples from 41 patients with BD and from 40 age- and sex-matched controls were studied. An ELISA assay was used to detect antibodies against parvovirus B19.
RESULTS: Six patients with BD (15.7%) had anti-B19 IgM antibodies in their serum samples indicating a recent infection, while no positivity for IgM antibodies was detected in the control group (p = 0.03).
CONCLUSION: Although there have been several reports of B19 infection associated with vasculitis, our findings do not …

Infections with parvovirus B19 are often characterized by the well-known erythema infectiosum, usually accompanied by fever and arthralgia. Furthermore the virus may cause a lethal hydrops fetalis during the pregnancy or a severe aplastic crisis in patients suffer from chronic hemolytic anemia. We present three patients infected by parvovirus B19. Whose skin lesions included a non-specific exanthem, erythema multiforme, and purpura. The virus infection was confirmed both by serology and PCR identification. In conclusion the diagnosis of acute exanthems should include the search for virus infec…

In a 32-year-old women with clinical and scintigraphic signs of thyroiditis, serological screening showed positive IgG and IgM titres against Parvovirus B19 (PB19). Subacute thyroiditis has not previously been reported following PB19 infection. The present case suggests that subacute thyroiditis may be caused by PB19 infection. Further screening is necessary to establish whether this infection is more frequently associated with subacute thyroiditis than previously thought.

Human parvovirus B19 infections have been linked with the development of a short-lived symmetrical polyarthritis and, rarely, a more persistent arthritis. We prospectively looked for serological evidence of recent B19 infection in 25 early synovitis patients presenting within 12 weeks of symptom onset and compared them with 21 controls seen over the same time period. None of the control patients had evidence of recent B19 infection while 3 of the early synovitis patients had raised IgM anti-B19 antibody levels. Two had a transient arthritis and 1 developed persistent seropositive rheumatoid ar…

There are few reports in the literature of hepatitis as a manifestation of Parvovirus B19 infection. We describe a case of Parvovirus B19 associated acute cholestatic hepatitis diagnosed based on a positive serologic test (IgM) and molecular detection of parvovirus B19 DNA in peripheral blood. Parvovirus B19 infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patient presenting with acute hepatitis of unknown etiology.
