In humans, skin and soft t … the isolate revealed 99.85% homology with P.multocida (GenBank accession no: NG_115137.1). Although Pasteurella multocida pneumonia is not commonly observed, the presence of underlying bronchiectasis in this patient facilitated the establishment of the bacteria. In order not to miss the diagnosis of pneumonia due to P.multocida, microbiological evaluation and molecular …

Pasteurella multocida is a common commensal microorganism found in the nasopharynx of domestic and wild animals. Humans acquire P multocida infection primarily through contact with animals or their mucous secretions. P multocida is infrequently encountered in clinical settings, and it is considered as a zoonotic pathogen. In this study, we present an interesting case of septic arthritis and bacteremia caused by P multocida in a 62-year-old patient. The patient was treated with surgical procedures and antibiotic therapy, which made significant improvement. This case study highlights the importa…

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of a wide range of disease (pasteurellosis) and a zoonotic pathogen in humans. Some pathogenic bacteria are able to exploit host plasminogen for migration across tissue barriers or evade from host innate immunity. However, there is no study on host plasminogen exploitation of P. multocida. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) has been reported to be a plasminogen receptor in many pathogenic bacteria, but its role in P. multocida exploiting plasminogen has not yet been characterized. The aim of this study was to detect the activity of P. …

This report presents a case of progressive septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by a rare pathogen, Pasteurella multocida, thought to be provoked by the use of systemic corticosteroids. Despite initial improvement after antibiotics and surgical procedure, the patient returned with new, associated symptoms 1 month later. This concurrent set of circumstances leading to a life-threatening condition has not been reported, to the best of our knowledge. Physicians aware of such a case will be better prepared to diagnose, treat, and educate their patients. Additionally, the diagnostic challenge …

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a commensal organism present in the oral cavities of many animals. It can cause various infections including soft tissue, joint, and respiratory infections in human beings, but intra-abdominal infection by P. multocida is rare. We report our experience with a case of acute cholecystitis with bacteremia caused by P. multocida.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 39-year-old female who underwent emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. The patient's blood and bile cultures were positive for P. multocida. She kept a dog and a cat as pets, bu…

Pasteurella multocida has been recognized as a contributor to debilitating and fatal porcine pneumonia for at least 120 years and there continues to be sustained, unabated high prevalence of the organism in cases submitted for diagnostic work up. Understanding of its role in disease has been limited, in part because of difficulty in reproducing the disease experimentally with capsular type A strains of P. multocida, the predominant type associated with porcine pneumonia. This limitation has stymied the development of improved methods for disease control. In this review, the reports of efforts …

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera and other diseases of production animals. Isolates are classified into five groups based on capsular antigens and into 16 serotypes based on LPS antigens. Strains causing fowl cholera are most frequently designated A:1, A:3 or A:4. Whole cell bacterins can provide some degree of protection, but only against the homologous LPS serotype. There is good evidence that cross-protective antigens are expressed only under in vivo conditions. Empirically derived, live, attenuated vaccines can protect against heterologous serotypes, but because…

Several case reports attest to the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida in raptors; however, the pathologic syndromes have not been fully described. We describe here the lesions encountered in 22 avian cholera cases in raptors. Besides septicemia-related lesions, a unique syndrome of esophageal abscesses was noted in 8 of the 11 (73%) Buteo hawks that succumbed to avian cholera. Esophageal abscesses were not noted in birds belonging to the order Strigiformes (owls) or family Falconidae (falcons and their relatives). Thus, the presence of white plaques in both the oropharynx and esophagus of …

The role of LPS in immunity was studied using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and active immunisation experiments. A panel of six MAbs produced against Pasteurella multocida serotype B:2 reacted with the LPS of serotypes B:2 and B:5, but not with other serotypes. The MAbs could opsonise P. multocida for phagocytosis by mouse macrophages, but were not bactericidal in the presence of complement. They conferred only partial passive protection in mice. Similar results showing only partial protection were obtained when purified LPS was used to actively immunise mice prior to challenge, suggesting that…

The phenotypic characteristics of 60 Zimbabwean isolates of Pasteurella multocida sensu stricto, from disease syndromes in different host species were studied. A number of representative strains were also serotyped. Consistent results were obtained in the tests for; catalase, oxidase, urease, indole, acid in glucose, inositol, salicin and sucrose. There was no obvious relationship between serotype, host or disease and the pattern of utilization of certain substrates by an isolate. This has been discussed in the context of recent proposals to reclassify Pasteurella and P. multocida on genotypic…

Specific-pathogen-free ICR mice were infected aerogenically with Pasteurella multocida and, beginning 1 hour later, were treated with aztreonam (50 mg/kg of body weight). The number of viable bacilli in the lungs, liver, and spleen were determined at intervals for up to 36 hours. Aztreonam was bactericidal for growing bacilli in vitro and, when injected 1 and 5 hours after aerogenic exposure, provided greater than 80% protection after dosage at the level of 12.5 mg/kg. Below this dosage level, viable organisms persisted in the lungs and the spleen and many of the minimally treated mice eventua…

Monitoring of rabbits at a commercial rabbitry for Pasteurella multocida infection revealed that the nares of 10 litters of New Zealand White rabbits were not colonized before weaning at 8 weeks of age, regardless of whether or not the does were infected. The earliest nasal infection was detected at 12 weeks of age, and by 22 weeks of age, 23% had P multocida infection. Rhinitis developed 2 or more weeks after infection was detected in most rabbits. A survey of 76 adult rabbits in the breeding colony revealed that 72% had P multocida infection. In 31 rabbits with rhinitis, 90% were infected, w…

Two patients with spontaneous Pasteurella multocida peritonitis in association with cirrhosis and ascites are described. Both patients had close contact with domestic animals, but neither had been bitten. Both patients died, but only one as a result of his infection. We are aware of only one previous report of cirrhosis with spontaneous peritonitis caused by this organism. P. multocida should be considered as a possible cause of peritonitis in cirrhotic patients with a history of close contact with animals, particularly cats.

Specific pathogen-free CD-1 mice are highly susceptible to infection by Pasteurella multocida strain 5A whether introduced intravenously, intraperitoneally, subcutaneously, or aerogenically. The growth of the challenge organism in the blood, liver, spleen, lung, and peritoneal cavity was quantitated hourly for up to 12 h. Unvaccinated mice died 9 to 12 h after intravenous challenge due to the uncontrolled growth of the organism in all tissues tested. The rate of removal of the bacteria from the blood and of phagocytosis by peritoneal macrophages was extremely slow. In the absence of specific o…

A 53-year-old male visited our hospital due to nasal obstruction persisting for 6 months and constant rhinorrhea. Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida was isolated from his nasal discharge and lavage fluid of the maxillary sinus, and also from the oral cavity of the dog he kept. The bacterial strains isolated from the patient and dog were identical in terms of biochemical properties, and drug sensitivity. Although serotype was different, the strain from the patient showed (A:6) and that from his dog showed (A:5). The microorganism is not present in the general environment. The patient had co…
