Ethics support personnel's perceptions of patient and parent participation in clinical ethics support services in pediatric oncology.

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing discourse about patient and parent participation (PPP) in Clinical Ethics Support Services (CESS), and this paper focuses specifically on case-based CESS. Participation in CESS is increasing slowly in many contexts due to practical and moral complexity. To gain deeper understanding of PPP in CESS, we need to delve into stakeholders' perspectives and the landscape in which they operate. The aim of the study was to explore perceptions regarding feasibility and moral appropriateness of PPP in CESS in pediatric oncology. METHODS: Nordic healthcare personnel (n = 26

Patient Participation in Multidisciplinary Team Meetings in Residential Mental Health Services: An Explorative Study of Patients' Perception.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of evidence of mental health patients' perception on patient participation in multidisciplinary team meetings (MTMs) is a potential threat to the person-centeredness of care. AIM: To explore the perceptions of mental health patients regarding patient participation in MTMs and to identify factors associated with these perceptions. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, 127 former and 109 currently admitted mental health patients completed the Patient Participation during Team Meetings Questionnaire (PaPaT-Q). The STROBE-checklist was used for reporting the study. RESULTS:

Feasibility and acceptability of a toolkit to guide patient and family participation in intensive care unit rounds.

BACKGROUND: Engaging families in multidisciplinary bedside patient care rounds in the intensive care unit (ICU) can improve communication, shared decision-making, and family satisfaction, yet few interventions support structured family involvement. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of an ICU rounds toolkit designed to promote family participation in rounds. METHODS: We conducted a pilot prospective study using a before-and-after quasi-experimental design combined with structured rounds observations in a 12-bed general systems ICU in Calgary, Alberta. The intervention

Sickle cell disease: embedding patient participation into an international conference can transform the role of lived experience.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited chronic life-threatening disorder with increasing prevalence in Europe. People living with SCD in Europe mainly belong to vulnerable minorities, have a lower level of health education and suffer from isolation compared to those living with other chronic conditions. As a result, SCD patients are much less likely to partner in the design of research related to their condition and are limited in their ability to influence the research agenda. Aiming to increase the influence of patient voice in the development of SCD-related research, we set o

Commentary on Patient Participation in Clinical Ethics Support Deliberation: Perspectives from Parents and Clinicians in a Children's Hospital.

AbstractWhether and how patients should participate in clinical ethics discussions is an important contemporary debate. Murdoch recently reported clinicians' and ethics service members' views from England and the United States on patient participation in ethics consultation. In response to the call for further understanding, we report parents' and clinicians' experiences of active parental and child involvement in ethics case reviews (ECRs), including the then-novel use of videoconference ECRs during the pandemic in a UK tertiary children's hospital. Between January 2018 and May 2023, parents

Cognitive behavioral therapy for bipolar disorder: patient-level participation barriers and ketogenic metabolic therapy as a candidate adjunct.

This conceptual analysis synthesizes patient-level participation barriers described in the bipolar disorder CBT literature and considers ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) as a candidate adjunct within a delivery-focused framework. CBT is an evidence-based adjunctive psychotherapy for bipolar disorder, but its clinical value depends on whether patients initiate treatment, sustain session continuity, and complete between-session practice that supports skill use in daily life. In routine care, psychotherapy uptake remains limited, discontinuation can occur early, and patient-level barriers can co

Cystic fibrosis prevalence in the United States and participation in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry in 2020.

BACKGROUND: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) collects data on individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) in the United States (US). In 2012, the US CF population was estimated at 33,292 to 34,327 individuals, with 81-84% CFFPR participation. METHODS: In this study, we update these estimates via simulation to account for uncertainty in CF incidence by race or Hispanic ethnicity, initiation of CF newborn screening (NBS) programs by state, and updated cumulative survival for CF births 1968-2020. We defined registry participation as the proportion of individuals alive as of 2020

Patient participation in surgical site marking: can this be an additional tool to help avoid wrong-site surgery?

INTRODUCTION: Wrong-site surgery is defined as an operation conducted at the wrong site, on the wrong person, or resulting in the wrong procedure. Since 1993, more than 2200 wrong-site surgeries have been reported by the National Practitioner Data Base. A 2005 survey reported, 5.6% of replying academy fellows encountered a wrong-site surgery incident. Multiple interventions have been since suggested for prevention of these occurrences by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This institutional rev

Patient perspectives on clinical trial participation for novel advanced therapies: a focus group study in systemic lupus erythematosus.

To identify barriers and facilitators in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) regarding participation in clinical trials for novel/advanced agents, such as cellular therapies. Adults from our SLE research registry participated in 1-hour virtual focus groups concerning their perspectives on clinical trials for novel/advanced SLE therapies. Sessions, facilitated by trained moderators, were recorded and transcribed. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to code the data and generate themes/sub-themes. Nineteen patients participated in four focus groups (two in English, two in French). Th

Participation in Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Collection as a Part of Routine Supportive Care Delivery in Oncology.

PURPOSE: The use of electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) in supportive cancer care can lead to benefits, such as identifying at-risk patients in need of closer monitoring and treatment. Despite these benefits, most studies examining ePROMs in this area were for clinical trials rather than standard care. Since there is a need to identify which patients are more likely to participate in ePROMs, this study assessed ePROM participation rates and factors influencing greater participation among patients receiving supportive care. METHODS: This retrospective data analysis took place

Patient-Reported Factors Influencing Clinical Trial Participation: An In-depth Analysis of Patients With Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic systemic autoimmune disease, has only three approved therapies, despite a rapidly expanding number of clinical trials. Trials in SLE struggle to recruit patients and fail to fully enroll. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), another chronic autoimmune disease, has had more success in clinical trial enrollment. This article's goal is to analyze literature to compare patient perspectives on factors determining clinical trial participation in SLE and RA populations. A literature review regarding patient attitudes, perceptions, perspectives about, and barriers t

A patient-focused, theory-guided approach to survey design identified barriers to and drivers of clinical trial participation.

OBJECTIVES: Despite clear evidence showing that many clinical trials fail or are delayed because of poor patient recruitment, there is surprisingly little empirically supported guidance for trialists seeking to optimize their trial recruitment strategies. We propose that the challenges of recruitment can be better understood and addressed by thinking of research participation as one or more behaviors, subject to the same forces as other human behaviors. In this article, we describe an adaptable, behavioral theory-driven approach for designing pretrial surveys of the barriers and drivers releva
