fMRI adaptation (fMRIa), the attenuation of fMRI signal which follows repeated presentation of a stimulus, is a well-documented phenomenon. Yet, the underlying neural mechanisms supporting this effect are not fully understood. Recently, short-term perceptual expectations, induced by specific experimental settings, were shown to play an important modulating role in fMRIa. Here we examined the role of long-term expectations, based on 3D structural statistical regularities, in the modulation of fMRIa. To this end, human participants underwent fMRI scanning while performing a same-different task o

PURPOSE: This study aimed at evaluating the effect of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) on oral stereognostic ability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 14 patients having OSMF with no tongue involvement or any restriction in tongue mobility; the control group comprised 15 patients free from any oral symptoms. All patients in both groups had at least 26 teeth present and were of ages 20 to 40 years. Oral stereognostic ability was evaluated on the basis of correct recognition responses to test pieces of 12 geometric forms made from raw carrot. Of the 12 test pieces, six were large,

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by dysfunctional connectivity between prefrontal cortex and sub-cortical structures, and altered meso-cortical and/or meso-striatal dopamine release. Since time processing is also regulated by fronto-striatal circuits and modulated by dopaminergic transmission, we hypothesized that time processing is abnormal in TS.
METHODS: We compared time processing abilities between nine children with TS-only (i.e. without major psychiatric comorbidities) and 10 age-matched healthy children, employing a time reproduction task in which subjects actively r

Chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) have shown a better performance compared to click-evoked ABRs, due to their temporal organization which compensates for the traveling wave delay achieving a synchronous discharge of the cochlea. In this paper we present the development and evaluation, in healthy subjects, of a series of notched noise embedded frequency specific chirps to evoke ABRs. Results of the ABRs using Phase Synchronization Stability are also reported. The assessment of frequency specific responses by using noise embedded chirps was possible, and the PSS analysis supported

Not all conceivable grammars are realized within human languages. Rules based on rigid distances, in which a certain word must occur at a fixed distance from another word, are never found in grammars of human languages. Distances between words are specified in terms of relative, non-rigid positions. The left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) (Broca's area) has been found to be involved in the computation of non-rigid but not of rigid syntax in the language domain. A fundamental question is therefore whether the neural activity underlying this non-rigid architecture is language-specific, given that

Retinal input that is suppressed from visual awareness can nevertheless produce measurable aftereffects, revealing neural processes that do not directly result in a conscious percept. We here report that the face identity-specific aftereffect requires a visible face; it is effectively cancelled by binocular suppression or by inattentional blindness of the inducing face. Conversely, the same suppression does not interfere with the orientation-specific aftereffect. Thus, the competition between incompatible or interfering visual inputs to reach awareness is resolved before those aspects of infor

The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of a urination management system by developing a smart band-based algorithm that recognizes the urination interval of women. We designed a device that recognizes the time and interval of urination based on the patient's specific posture and posture changes. The technology used for recognition applied the Radial Basis Function kernel-based Support Vector Machine, a teaching and learning method that facilitates multidimensional analysis by simultaneously judging the characteristics of complex learning data. PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace.
METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Mental imagery and visual perception rely on the same content-dependent brain areas in the high-level visual cortex (HVC). However, little is known about dynamic mechanisms in these areas during imagery and perception. Here we disentangled local and inter-regional dynamic mechanisms underlying imagery and perception in the HVC and the hippocampus (HC), a key region for memory retrieval during imagery. Nineteen healthy participants watched or imagined a familiar scene or face during fMRI acquisition. The neural code for familiar landmarks and faces was distributed across the HVC and the HC, alt

OBJECTIVE: To report 4 cases of hyperfamiliarity for faces (HFF) and review 5 previously reported cases.
METHODS: We identified cases of HFF from PubMed search and references in prior reports.
RESULTS: Three of our 4 cases had pathologic findings that were most extensive in the left temporal lobe. HFF occurred after a tonic-clonic seizure (cases 1 and 3), during simple partial seizures (case 2), and in the setting of an increase in simple partial seizure frequency but not during seizures (case 4). All 9 cases were adults with 1 or more seizures; symptoms first occurred after seizures in 5 ca

Learning to decipher acoustically distorted speech serves as a test case for the study of language-related skill acquisition in persons with developmental dyslexia (DD). Deciphering this type of input is rarely learned explicitly and does not yield conscious insights. Problems in implicit and procedural skill learning have been proposed as possible causes of DD. Here we examined the learning of time-compressed (accelerated) speech and its generalization to novel materials among young adults with DD compared to typical readers (TD). All participants completed a training session that involved ju

The speech signal is rife with variations in phonetic ambiguity. For instance, when talkers speak in a conversational register, they demonstrate less articulatory precision, leading to greater potential for confusability at the phonetic level compared with a clear speech register. Current psycholinguistic models assume that ambiguous speech sounds activate more than one phonological category and that competition at prelexical levels cascades to lexical levels of processing. Imaging studies have shown that the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) is modulated by phonetic competition between simul

The implication of the dorsal stream in manipulating auditory information in working memory has been recently established. However, the oscillatory dynamics within this network and its causal relationship with behavior remain undefined. Using simultaneous MEG/EEG, we show that theta oscillations in the dorsal stream predict participants' manipulation abilities during memory retention in a task requiring the comparison of two patterns differing in temporal order. We investigated the causal relationship between brain oscillations and behavior by applying theta-rhythmic TMS combined with EEG over

By adulthood, literate humans have been exposed to millions of visual scenes and pages of text. Does the human visual system become attuned to the statistics of its inputs? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined whether the brain responses to line configurations are proportional to their natural-scene frequency. To further distinguish prior cortical competence from adaptation induced by learning to read, we manipulated whether the selected configurations formed letters and whether they were presented on the horizontal meridian, the familiar location where words usually appear

Timing abnormalities have been reported in many neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD, motor-timing impairments are especially debilitating in gait. Despite impaired audiomotor synchronization, PD patients' gait improves when they walk with an auditory metronome or with music. Building on that research, we make recommendations for optimizing sensory cues to improve the efficacy of rhythmic cuing in gait rehabilitation. Adaptive rhythmic metronomes (that synchronize with the patient's walking) might be especially effective. In a recent study we showed that adaptive m

We present an approach to learning the kinematic model of a robotic manipulator arm from scratch using self-observation via a single monocular camera. We introduce a flexible model based on Bayesian networks that allows a robot to simultaneously identify its kinematic structure and to learn the geometrical relationships between its body parts as a function of the joint angles. Further, we show how the robot can monitor the prediction quality of its internal kinematic model and how to adapt it when its body changes-for example due to failure, repair, or material fatigue. In experiments carried

Many studies in visual face recognition have supported a special role for the right fusiform gyrus. Despite the fact that faces can also be recognized haptically, little is known about the neural correlates of haptic face recognition. In the current fMRI study, neurologically intact participants were intensively trained to identify specific facemasks (molded from live faces) and specific control objects. When these stimuli were presented in the scanner, facemasks activated left fusiform and right hippocampal/parahippocampal areas (and other regions) more than control objects, whereas the latte

In Calliphora erythrocephala the visual fixation behaviour in one-eyed flies and partial blinded flies has been investigated. One-eyed flies show approximately the same stripe and edge fixation response as intact flies. Elimination of the frontal eye parts including the binocular field of vision does not effect the visual stripe fixation. On the other hand, if only the frontal areas of both eyes including the binocular field of vision are left open, no preferential direction can be observed (Fig. 1--3). The results imply the existence of a fixation-sensitive area of the eye located outside the

In type 1 diabetes, diurnal activity routines are influential factors in insulin dose calculations. Bolus advisors have been developed to more accurately suggest doses of meal-related insulin based on carbohydrate intake, according to pre-set insulin to carbohydrate levels and insulin sensitivity factors. These parameters can be varied according to the time of day and their optimal setting relies on identifying the daily time periods of routines accurately. The main issues with reporting and adjustments of daily activity routines are the reliance on self-reporting which is prone to inaccuracy

Evidence of abnormalities in the perception of rapidly presented sounds in dyslexia has been interpreted as evidence of a prolonged time window within which sounds can influence the perception of temporally surrounding sounds. We recorded the magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm) to infrequent tone omissions in a group of six dyslexic adults and six IQ and age-matched controls. An MMNm is only elicited in response to a complete stimulus omission when successive inputs fall within the temporal window of integration (stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) approximately 160 ms). No MMNm responses were rec
