The construction of perceptual grouping displays using GERT.

To study perceptual grouping processes, vision scientists often use stimuli consisting of spatially separated local elements that, together, elicit the percept of a global structure. We developed a set of methods for constructing such displays and implemented them in an open-source MATLAB toolbox, GERT (Grouping Elements Rendering Toolbox). The main purpose of GERT is to embed a contour in a field of randomly positioned elements, while avoiding the introduction of a local density cue. However, GERT's modular implementation enables the user to create a far greater variety of perceptual grouping

Shades of Déjerine--forging a causal link between the visual word form area and reading.

In 1892, the French neurologist Jules Déjerine suggested that pure alexia resulted from an occipital lesion that selectively disconnected visual input from a region of the brain that housed "optical images of words." In this issue of Neuron, Gaillard and colleagues offer evidence consistent with Déjerine's proposal and provide new insights to the functional role of the "visual word form area."

Visual search for object orientation can be modulated by canonical orientation.

The authors studied the influence of canonical orientation on visual search for object orientation. Displays consisted of pictures of animals whose axis of elongation was either vertical or tilted in their canonical orientation. Target orientation could be either congruent or incongruent with the object's canonical orientation. In Experiment 1, vertical canonical targets were detected faster when they were tilted (incongruent) than when they were vertical (congruent). This search asymmetry was reversed for tilted canonical targets. The effect of canonical orientation was partially preserved wh

Pattern-onset and OFFset visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of hemianopic field defects.

BACKGROUND: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assess the function of the visual pathway from the retina to the primary visual cortex. There is much evidence that monocular pattern-reversal and flash VEPs can distinguish dysfunction due to chiasmal and post-chiasmal afferent pathway lesions. There is less evidence about the use of pattern-onset/OFFset VEPs to identify post-chiasmic dysfunction. METHODS: We present nine patients with a range of visual pathway defects that caused dense hemianopic field defects. These patients had pattern onset-OFFset VEPs recorded from an array of occipital electr

Possible functions of contextual modulations and receptive field nonlinearities: pop-out and texture segmentation.

When analyzing a visual image, the brain has to achieve several goals quickly. One crucial goal is to rapidly detect parts of the visual scene that might be behaviorally relevant, while another one is to segment the image into objects, to enable an internal representation of the world. Both of these processes can be driven by local variations in any of several image attributes such as luminance, color, and texture. Here, focusing on texture defined by local orientation, we propose that the two processes are mediated by separate mechanisms that function in parallel. More specifically, differenc

Ambiguity and invariance: two fundamental challenges for visual processing.

The visual system is tasked with extracting stimulus content (e.g. the identity of an object) from the spatiotemporal light pattern falling on the retina. However, visual information can be ambiguous with regard to content (e.g. an object when viewed from far away), requiring the system to also consider contextual information. Additionally, visual information originating from the same content can differ (e.g. the same object viewed from different angles), requiring the system to extract content invariant to these differences. In this review, we explore these challenges from experimental and th

A model of human pattern perception: association fields for adaptive spatial filters.

Visual neurons in the primary visual cortex 'look' at the retinal image through a four-dimensional array of spatial receptive fields (filter-elements): two spatial dimensions and, at each spatial location, two Fourier dimensions of spatial frequency and orientation. In general, visual objects activate filter-elements along each of these dimensions, suggesting a need for some kind of linking mechanism that determines whether two or more filter-elements are responding to the same or different contours or objects. In the spatial domain, a (spatial) association field between filter-elements, arran

The extrastriate body area (also) subserves visual body detection.

The extrastriate body area (EBA) has been implicated in many body-related tasks, from emotional body perception to embodied cognition, raising the question of whether the EBA is a visual body-selective area. Here, I review evidence that the EBA is visually tuned to body shape, even in the near-absence of attention, and is causally involved in visual body detection. The EBA's bottom-up tuning to body shape can account for the prioritized visual awareness and detection of bodies observed in behavioral studies. The EBA may have evolved to ensure the rapid visual detection of conspecifics, a cruci

Altered large-scale organization of shape processing in visual agnosia.

Recent findings suggest that both dorsal and ventral visual pathways process shape information. Nevertheless, a lesion to the ventral pathway alone can result in visual agnosia, an impairment in shape perception. Here, we explored the neural basis of shape processing in a patient with visual agnosia following a circumscribed right hemisphere ventral lesion and evaluated longitudinal changes in the neural profile of shape representations. The results revealed a reduction of shape sensitivity slopes along the patient's right ventral pathway and a similar reduction in the contralesional left vent

Foveated metamers of the early visual system.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise has been reported to suppress colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism of suppression by exercise and its effect on the Wnt pathway, which is particularly involved in the early stage of carcinogenesis, remain unclear. In this study, we subjected ApcMin/+ mice to exercise by shaking stimuli to investigate the mechanisms of suppressing colorectal cancer, and focused on the Ca2+ pathway, which is one of the β-catenin-independent Wnt signaling pathways that suppress the accumulation of β-catenin. METHODS: Mice in the exercise group were subjected to exercise by shaking stimul

Shared texture-like representations underlie deep neural network alignment with human visual processing.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) excel at predicting neural responses across the visual hierarchy,1,2,3,4,5 a success widely interpreted as evidence of shared object recognition computations.6,7 Yet improving DNN object recognition accuracy does not reliably increase neural predictivity,8,9 and even untrained networks predict brain responses above chance.9,10,11 This disconnect suggests that object recognition may not drive DNN-brain alignment. Texture-like statistics are represented in both DNNs and mid-level visual cortex (A.V. Jagadeesh and M. Livingstone, 2024, ICLR, presentation).12,13,1416 In

Visual memory.

Visual memory allows us to behave adaptively in the world we live. In this tutorial we will review the types of visual memory storage that have been identified. These storage processes begin the instant a visual stimulus appears and continue through to remembering objects and scenes that were encountered decades ago. The different types of memory storage have different properties of capacity and resolution. We will discuss how our memories allow us to link new information to information that we have acquired across our life spans. We will also discuss how this linking between new information a

The dynamics of cortical interactions in visual recognition of object category: living versus nonliving.

Noninvasive brain imaging studies have shown that higher visual processing of objects occurs in neural populations that are separable along broad semantic categories, particularly living versus nonliving objects. However, because of their limited temporal resolution, these studies have not been able to determine whether broad semantic categories are also reflected in the dynamics of neural interactions within cortical networks. We investigated the time course of neural propagation among cortical areas activated during object naming in 12 patients implanted with subdural electrode grids prior t

Encoding of Partially Occluded and Occluding Objects in Primate Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Object segmentation-the process of parsing visual scenes-is essential for object recognition and scene understanding. We investigated how responses of neurons in macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex contribute to object segmentation under partial occlusion. Specifically, we asked whether IT responses to occluding and occluded objects are bound together as in the visual image or linearly separable reflecting their segmentation. We recorded the activity of 121 IT neurons while two male animals performed a shape discrimination task under partial occlusion. We found that for a majority (60%) of n

Orthographic connectivity in Arabic reading: a case study of an individual with deep dyslexia and letter-by-letter reading.

Arabic orthography is complex, partly as a consequence of variations in orthographic connectivity. In this article, we present the case study of CHS, an Arabic individual with deep dyslexia associated with letter-by-letter reading. In the experimental study, we specifically explored the influence of orthographic connectivity on CHS's word recognition and reading abilities. Our results show that CHS's performance was better preserved for words and non-words made up of connected letters than made up of non-connected letters. CHS demonstrated impairment of visuoperceptual mechanisms, which affect

Linguistic-visual routines and name activation in visual world studies of spoken word recognition.

We address a longstanding issue in visual world studies of speech and spoken word recognition: What role does retrieval of object names play in mediating eye movements to displayed objects? We propose a novel "linguistic-visual routines" linking hypothesis in which the representations of spoken words are linked to schematic visual representations and visuomotor routines, without involvement of object names. When triggered during reference resolution, these routines direct gaze to objects in a co-present visual world that are consistent with the schematic visual representations. To evaluate pos

A century of prosopometamorphopsia studies.

Prosopometamorphopsia is an extremely rare disorder of visual perception characterised by facial distortions. We here review 81 cases (eight new ones and 73 cases published over the past century) to shed light on the perception of face gestalts. Our analysis indicates that the brain systems underlying the perception of face gestalts have genuine network properties, in the sense that they are widely disseminated and built such that spatially normal perception of faces can be maintained even when large parts of the network are compromised. We found that bilateral facial distortions were primaril

The Emergence of Topography and Hemispheric Lateralization in High-Level Vision.

This article reviews research that examines the topographic organization of the human brain, the role of development, breakdown and plasticity, and the constraints that give rise to the replicable organization across individuals and cultures. To address these questions, we evaluate the topographic arrangement of regions in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) that respond strongly to the viewing of faces and words, and demonstrate that both categories drive responses in both hemispheres albeit to a greater degree in the right hemisphere for faces and left hemisphere for words. We hypothesize that thi

Resistance of a short-term memory concealed information test with famous faces to countermeasures.

The concealed information test (CIT) aims at identifying knowledge that a person wants to hide, by measuring physiological indices during the presentation of known versus unknown items. Recently, Lancry-Dayan et al. (Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition, 7 (2), 291-302, 2018) proposed a new version of this test that included a short-term memory task to maximize differences between responses to items. Participants were asked to memorize four pictures of faces that included one face of an acquaintance. The authors observed that participants looked at the familiar face during the f

Repetition effects in human ERPs to faces.

In the present paper, we review research conducted over the past 25 years addressing the effects of repeating various kinds of information in faces (e.g., pictorial, spatial configural, identity, semantic) on different components in human event-related brain potentials (ERPs). This body of evidence suggests that several ERP components are systematically linked to different functional components of face identity processing. Specifically, we argue (1) that repetition of the category of faces (categorical adaptation) strongly affects the occipitotemporal N170 amplitude, which is systematically su
