This article reports a new chiral separation method-biphasic recognition chiral extraction for the separation of mandelic acid enantiomers. Distribution behavior of mandelic acid enantiomers was studied in the extraction system with O,O'-di-benzoyl-(2S,3S)-4-toluoyl-tartaric acid (D-(+)-DTTA) in organic phase and beta-CD derivatives in aqueous phase, and the influence of the types and concentrations of extractants and pH on extraction efficiency was investigated. Effects of chelating agents on toxicity of copper to and bioaccumulation in Elsholtzia splendens were investigated. EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) inhibited plant growth, decreased the biomass, chlorophyll content and root activity. EDTA had very low or no influence on the toxicity of copper to Elsholtzia splendens. DTPA decreased copper-induced toxicity. DTPA decreased copper accumulation in Elsholtzia splendens. EDTA increased copper transfer from the subterranean part to the aerial part of the plant.

In this study, greatly enhanced Mn(II) adsorption was achieved by as-synthesized diethylenetriaminepentaacetate acid intercalated Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs-DTPA). The adsorption capacity of LDHs-DTPA was 83.5 mg/g, which is much higher than that of LDHs-EDTA (44.4 mg/g), LDHs-Oxalate (21.6 mg/g) and LDHs (28.8 mg/g). The present work investigated the physical and thermal characteristics of three polymorphic forms (namely, PF1, PF2, and PF3) of a diethyl ester analog of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (C2E2) produced under varying conditions. Efforts have been made in this study to stabilize the sewage sludge mixed with sugarcane trash in four different proportions: 20% (T(1)); 40% (T(2)); 60% (T(3)) and 80% (T(4)), under laboratory conditions using epigeic earthworm (Oligochaeta) Eisenia fetida. The composting potential of worm was also evaluated in 100% sewage sludge treatment (T(5)). The changes in chemical properties of substrate was measured at the end. PURPOSE: SLN identification could improve the pathological staging of prostate cancer. Prior SLN studies have been compromised by delayed radiotracer uptake rates and significant diffusion rates out of the sentinel nodes. Lymphoseek is a new radiopharmaceutical specifically designed for SLN mapping. It shows rapid and sustained SLN uptake.

In order to detect the varicocele, scrotal scintigraphies by using 99mTc-HSA-D were performed in 14 patients with male infertile or palpable mass in left scrotum on physical examinations. Abnormal pooling of 99mTc-HSA-D, indicative of varicocele lesion, could be found in left scrotum in 9 cases, confirmed surgically or clinically. Compared with 99mTc-HSA, 99mTc-HSA-D was superior in high uptake ratio of varicocele to soft tissue and in nonvisualization of bladder. Thus, 99mTc-HSA-D scrotal scintigraphy seemed to be of a great use to detect the varicocele.

Four cases of basal ganglia infarction demonstrated by radionuclide brain imaging are presented. Bilateral basal ganglia infarctions in two patients were probably related to methanol intoxication and meningoencephalitis, and unilateral basal ganglia infarctions in two other patients were presumably due to cerebral atherosclerosis and/or hypertension. Various causes and mechanisms of basal ganglia infarction as well as positive findings of radionuclide brain imaging are briefly reviewed.

Renal cyst epithelial transport of organic molecules was investigated during three separate cyst drainage procedures in a non-uremic patient with polycystic kidney disease (PCKD). Following constant intravenous insulin infusion, four of eight sampled cysts achieved concentrations exceeding those expected by glomerular filtration alone.
