This study was aimed to investigate the association of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for pepsinogen genes with peptic ulcer disease. Eighty unrelated controls, 61 patients with gastric ulcer, and 57 patients with duodenal ulcer were studied. Hypervolemia and stimulation of diuresis in dogs was found to decrease the amylolytic activity of the blood plasma and pepsinogen concentration. The number of enzymes bound with blood plasma albumins decreases in hyper-fermentation. The changing connexion of the plasma albumins with the enzymes entails a renal (as well as extrarenal) extraction of the enzymes from the organism and maintenance of their relatively constant concentration and activity in the blood.

We measured serum PG I levels by an Elisa technique before and after stimulation with pentagastrin in 260 patients (161 males and 99 females). The serum levels were correlated to basic acid output (BAO), maximum acid output (MAO) and peak acid output (PAO). Mercaptomethylimidazole (MMI), a potent antithyroid drug of the thionamide group, induces both acid and pepsinogen secretion independently in control and pylorus ligated mice. Serum group I pepsinogen (PG I) levels, basal acid output, and peak acid output (PAO) have been determined in 120 patients, 54 with duodenal ulcer, 14 with prepyloric ulcer, 12 with gastric ulcer, and 40 without ulcer. We have investigated the effect of therapy for Helicobacter pylori gastritis on serum concentrations of pepsinogen I and II in 43 patients.
