Peroneal intraneural ganglia are rare, and their management is controversial. Presently, the accepted treatment of intraneural ganglia is decompression and ligation of the articular nerve branch. Although this treatment prevents recurrence of the ganglia, the resultant motor deficit of foot drop in the case of intraneural peroneal ganglia is unsatisfying. Foot drop is classically treated with splinting or tendon transfers to the foot. We have recently published a case report of a peroneal intraneural ganglion treated by transferring a motor nerve branch of flexor hallucis longus into a nerve b

Double crush syndrome (DCS) is a clinical condition involving impingement of the spinal and peripheral nerves. DCS of the lower limbs has been recognized; however, no detailed reports have been published. Herein, we report a rare case of the coexistence of L5 radiculopathy and peroneal nerve entrapment neuropathy. The patient suffered from pain in the left lower leg and left foot combined with muscle weakness in the left leg without a Tinel-like sign in the peroneal tunnel area. MRI showed a deficit in the left L5 nerve root sleeve, and X-ray imaging revealed L5 spondylolysis. Lumbar fusion su

Sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic yield of the superficial peroneal nerve (SPN)/peroneus brevis muscle (PBM) biopsy in 43 patients with clinically suspected vasculitic neuropathy was studied. Biopsies were classified as "definite", "suspicious" or "possible" in accordance with established criteria. Vasculitis was detected in 27 patients (21 with non-systemic vasculitis, and six with systemic vasculitis). In patients with "definite" vasculitis (n=13), the sensitivity of SPN/PBM biopsy was 76.4% with 100% specificity. By including patients suspicious for vasculitis (n=10), sensitivity inc

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in peroneal neuropathy are not well documented and the prognostic value of imaging remains uncertain. Upper limits of cross-sectional area (CSA) on ultrasound (US) have been established, but uncertainty regarding generalizability remains. We aimed to describe MRI findings of the peroneal nerve in patients and healthy controls and to compare these results to US findings and clinical characteristics.
METHODS: We prospectively included patients with foot drop and electrodiagnostically confirmed peroneal neuropathy, and performed clinic

RATIONALE: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common type of peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities. The peroneal nerve is usually compressed at the lateral aspect of the fibular head. Compression by ganglion cysts are one of the numerous underlying etiologies for peroneal nerve neuropathy and are most frequently located around the fibular neck and proximal tibiofibular joint. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an extraneural ganglion cyst located at the level of the distal thigh that resulted in compressive peroneal neuropathy.

RATIONALE: Most cases of foot drop are known to result from lower motor neuron pathologies, particularly lumbar radiculopathy and peripheral neuropathy, including common peroneal neuropathy. To improve the prognosis of foot drop, it is important to quickly and accurately diagnose the etiology and provide appropriate treatment.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old female patient with a history of L4-5 intervertebral disc herniation presented with right foot drop that had developed 1 month previously.
DIAGNOSIS: Electrodiagnostic examination revealed common peroneal neuropathy combined with L5 radi

The aim of this study is to evaluate the simultaneous recording of the medial dorsal cutaneous nerve (MDCN) and the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve (IDCN) in the investigation of peripheral neuropathy. We obtained MDCN and IDCN recordings in 35 patients with peripheral neuropathy and in 41 healthy subjects to determine the specificity of the sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude of each branch separately and of both simultaneously by using the maximal amplitude of either branch. The patients with peripheral neuropathy had low MDCN and IDCN SNAP amplitude in 60% and 14.3% respecti

Peroneal nerve entrapment is most common in the popliteal fossa, but is rarely caused by a ganglion. Although ganglionic cysts are very common lesions, they seldom cause serious complications. Ganglionic cysts developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. We report on two cases of compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve caused by an extraneural ganglion and its evaluation with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography. The differential diagnosis should involve L5 root pathology, a posttraumatic intraneural hemorrhage, a

Fourteen patients belonging to eight families were studied. At least one member of each family presented a clinical picture of spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) and lowered motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV). Muscular atrophy of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth type was found in 11 cases. The average MNCV of the median nerve was less than half the value in the controls (P less than 0.001). Morphometric analysis of the superficial peroneal nerve showed a considerable reduction (P less than 0.001) in myelinated fibres, primarily those of large diameter (P less than 0.001), a high average density of

The most frequent mononeuropathy in the lower extremity has been reported as the common peroneal nerve entrapment neuropathy (CPNe) around the head and neck of the fibula, although the mechanism of the neuropathy in this area cannot be fully explained. Therefore, the aim of this cadaveric study was to evaluate the relationship between morphologic variations of the distal biceps femoris muscle (BFM) and the course of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) and to investigate the incidence and morphological characteristics of anatomical variations in the BFM associated with CPNe. The popliteal region an

RATIONALE: Common peroneal neuropathy (CPN) is a common peripheral neuropathy usually caused by trauma or prolonged compression. Nontraumatic and recurrent cases, however, are rare, especially in older adults. This report presents a case of recurrent nontraumatic CPN, emphasizing the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old male presented with sudden right-sided foot drop, numbness, and paresthesia without recent trauma.
DIAGNOSES: Magnetic resonance imaging and electrodiagnostic studies confirmed nontraumatic CPN with compression near the fibular head.

We report the case of a 61-year old patient with no particular previous history who complained of pain with paraesthesias at the level of the anterolateral compartment of the left leg irradiating to the dorsal side of the ankle and the foot which lasted over six months. These pains were made worse by effort. Clinical examination showed partial sensitivity deficit and positive Tinel's sign in the territory of the superficial peroneal nerve (A). Electromyography (EMG) confirmed peroneal nerve involvement with decreased amplitude of sensory potentials. X-ray ruled out the presence of an underlyin

Ankle sprain is only rarely reported as the cause of peroneal nerve palsy and occurs predominantly in adults. Peroneal nerve palsy following an ankle sprain is extremely rare in children. Furthermore, peroneal nerve palsy most commonly results from a severe ankle sprain with considerable pain and edema. Peroneal nerve palsy after minor ankle torsion without major clinical symptoms of ankle sprain is uncommon. Here, we report the case of a 9-year-old boy who developed right peroneal neuropathy, leading to foot drop, following minor ankle plantar flexion/inversion torsion. Electrophysiological f

A family is described in which a mother and three of her five children showed myoclonic epilepsy. The mother and one son were also ataxic; one other son had additional features of Friedreich's ataxia, and a daughter had peroneal muscular atrophy as well as myoclonic epilepsy and ataxia. Although some of these disorders have been associated in previously reported families, the occurrence of all three disorders in members of one family seems to be unique. It is concluded that this family shows the manifestations of one, probably dominant, gene. The differences in age of onset and manifestations

OBJECTIVE: Common peroneal (fibular) neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremity. Despite this, there are surprisingly few studies on the topic, and a knowledge gap remains in the literature. As one attempts to address this knowledge gap, a core outcome set (COS) is needed to guide the planning phases of future studies to allow synthesis and comparability of these studies. The objective of this study was to develop the COS-common peroneal neuropathy (CoPe) using a modified Delphi approach.
METHODS: A 5-stage approach was used to develop the COS-CoPe: 1) stage 1, consor
