Epileptic feeling of multiple presences in the frontal space.

We describe the case of a patient who during a simple focal epileptic seizure due to vascular cerebral sequelae, reported the paroxysmal convincing feeling of the presence of several familiar persons in her peripersonal and extrapersonal space. Because the patient reported sensing multiple presences and recognizing them as family members, her case appears to contradict the hypothesis that the feeling of a non-existent human presence is an autoscopic phenomenon involving the neural "reduplication of the body". As an alternative hypothesis, I propose that the feeling of a non-existent presence m…

A primer for the optometric management of unilateral spatial inattention.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral spatial inattention (USI) (a.k.a. neglect, unilateral neglect, visual neglect) is a common occurrence after stroke. It can also occur subsequent to traumatic brain injury. Insult to the right inferior (posterior) parietal cortex is the structure that is virtually always involved, although other brain areas have been implicated. The major consequence of USI is that the patient is unaware of one side of the body, and/or one side of visual space. Current literature expresses this as USI in the individual's personal, peri-personal, and extra-personal spaces. METHODS: We dis…

Network QoS Impact on Spatial Perception through Sensory Substitution in Navigation Systems for Blind and Visually Impaired People.

A navigation system for individuals suffering from blindness or visual impairment provides information useful to reach a destination. Although there are different approaches, traditional designs are evolving into distributed systems with low-cost, front-end devices. These devices act as a medium between the user and the environment, encoding the information gathered on the surroundings according to theories on human perceptual and cognitive processes. Ultimately, they are rooted in sensorimotor coupling. The present work searches for temporal constraints due to such human-machine interfaces, w

Shaping multisensory action-space with tools: evidence from patients with cross-modal extinction.

Recent findings from neurophysiology, neuropsychology and psychology have shown that peri-personal space is represented through an integrated multisensory processing. In humans, the interaction between peri-personal space representation and action execution can be revealed through the use of tools that, by extending the reachable space, modify the strength of visual-tactile extinction. We have previously shown that the peri-hand space whereby vision and touch are integrated can be expanded, and contracted, depending upon tool-use. Here, we show that these dynamic changes critically depend upon…

Peri-Head Distance Coding in the Mouse Brainstem.

Perceiving object distance in peri-personal space is essential for guiding movement and avoiding danger. During active sensation, distance information is often anchored to the body via touch; yet how early somatosensory circuits extract distance information from tactile inputs remains unclear. Here, we investigate how second-order neurons in the mouse whisker brainstem encode peri-head distance. Using in vivo extracellular recordings in awake mice in a naturalistic wall-passing paradigm, we find brainstem neurons employ two distance-coding schemes: a "proximity" code, where firing increases mo…

The Association of Mobility Determinants and Life Space Among Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand the factors associated with life-space mobility so that mobility disability can be prevented/treated. The purpose of this study was to identify the association between mobility determinants and life space among older adults. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 249 community-dwelling older adults (mean age = 77.4 years, 65.5% female, 88% White), who were recruited for a randomized, controlled, clinical intervention trial. Associations between cognitive, physical, psychosocial, financial, and environmental mobility determinants and the

[The EEG rhythms and psychological indices of emotions in reactive depression].

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), an

Noise characteristics of surgical space suits.

Several studies indicate that the noise generated by performing orthopedic surgery has the potential to cause hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss was found in 50% of the orthopedic surgeons studied using audiometric testing, with a greater incidence associated with years of practice. Noise produced by several orthopedic surgical instruments such as saws, drills, and hammers during surgery exceeds 100 dB, especially during knee replacement procedures. In one study, surgical space suits (personal protection systems) were suggested to help protect against noise-induced hearing loss, although

The effects of gender violence/ harassment prevention programming in middle schools: a randomized experimental evaluation.

In this experiment, 123 sixth and seventh grade classrooms from Cleveland area schools were randomly assigned to one of two five-session curricula addressing gender violence/ sexual harassment (GV/SH) or to a no-treatment control. Three-student surveys were administered. Students in the law and justice curricula, compared to the control group, had significantly improved outcomes in awareness of their abusive behaviors, attitudes toward GV/SH and personal space, and knowledge. Students in the interaction curricula experienced lower rates of victimization, increased awareness of abusive behavior…

Decoding the Miss Daisy Syndrome: an examination of subjective responses to mobility change.

The subjective responses associated with personal life space and mobility status were explored. Thirty individuals participated in focus groups based on self-rated disability status, current places visited, and availability. Qualitative analyses revealed that most participants equated personal mobility with driving a vehicle. Attitudes concerning mobility status and preparedness for change varied based on disability level and personal experience. Fear of dependence from future mobility loss was prominent in all groups. Few participants acknowledged significant planning for future retirement fr

Recovery from unilateral neglect after right-hemisphere stroke.

PURPOSE: To show the recovery process for different forms of unilateral neglect (UN)--including personal neglect and neglect of far space--in relationship to impairment, disability, cognition and mood. METHOD: Patients were tested at 2-4 weeks, at 6 months and at 1 year. We used the Behaviour Inattention Test and a test for personal neglect. We also used the NIH Stroke Scale, the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the Mini-Mental State Evaluation and the Geriatric Depression Scale. RESULTS: Peripersonal neglect diminishes within 6 months, but complete recovery occurred in only 13%. The p

Dissociation between personal and extrapersonal neglect in a crossed aphasia study.

Abstract Several reports document crossed aphasia following a right cerebral infarct. However, few of them provide a detailed investigation of associated neuropsychological disorders. A personal neglect disorder with no difficulty in orienting attention in the contralesional space has not been frequently reported independently of lesion side for the language deficit. In most cases, the deficit is described in the acute period. We report the case of a patient who showed severe crossed aphasia several months after cerebral damage. In addition to his language deficit, he suffered from finger agno

Cortical and Subcortical Alpha-Band Electroencephalographic (EEG) Network Involved in the Interpersonal Space Sensitivity.

The presence of another human in our immediate or distant environment is a crucial factor for survival and social behavior. Our actions vary depending on the other person's relative proximity, involving integration of brain functions subserved by neural oscillations, to generate the most appropriate behavior. This study highlights the alpha EEG role and its neural generators in interpersonal space sensitivity (IPSS). To investigate this, participants stood face-to-face, gazing into each other's eyes, while wearing a mask preventing them from staring at each other. An auditory order instructed …

Functional tool actions in near and far space affect the distribution of visual attention along the tool.

Researchers propose 2 opposing views regarding visuospatial attentional distributions of tool space. Tool-use in far space either (a) remaps peripersonal space leading to distributed attention along the tool, or (b) shifts attention to the tool's functional end. However, most studies employ only one type of functional tool action to support their view. This study assessed whether attentional distributions are explained by different tool action types performed in space relative to the body. In Experiment 1, participants used a curved tool to push objects in far space or pull objects from far-to…

The Association Between Transportation and Life-Space Mobility in Community-Dwelling Older People With or Without Walking Difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine whether a persons' most frequently used mode of transportation is associated with life-space mobility and whether the association differs between persons with or without walking difficulties. METHOD: Life-space mobility was measured with the Life-Space Assessment in 848 community-dwelling men and women aged 75 to 90 years. Six separate mobility groups were formed according to the most frequently used mode of transportation (car driver, car passenger, public transportation) combined with the presence or absence of difficulties walking 2 km. Smart Life-Space Surveillance: Integrated Life-Space Mobility Monitoring Using a Sensor Fusion System for Older Adults Living Alone.

This study aims to verify the feasibility of measuring the living space of elderly people living alone. The system uses a low risk of identifying personal information by using motion sensors indoors and a smartwatch's GPS (Global Positioning System) records when going out. On the first day of the demonstration, the motion detection sensor system was installed in the home, and the subjects were instructed on using and charging the smartwatch. The participants continued their daily lives for 8 weeks. The indoor system recorded activities such as moving between rooms, using the toilet, and sleepi

Identifying peripersonal space boundaries in newborns.

Peripersonal space immediately surrounds the body and can be represented in the brain as a multisensory and sensorimotor interface mediating physical and social interactions between body and environment. Very little consideration has been given to the ontogeny of peripersonal spatial representations in early postnatal life, despite the crucial roles of peripersonal space and its adaptive relevance as the space where infants' earliest interactions take place. Here, we investigated whether peripersonal space could be considered a delimited portion of space with defined boundaries soon after birt…
