Personality difficulty: A useful addition to the literature on personality disturbance.

The term personality difficulty has become part of the personality disorders and related traits section of the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases. People with this condition make great use of health services as it can be associated with distress and poor social functioning. In the WHO guidebook, Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements for ICD-11 Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CDDR) (2024) personality difficulty is included to aid clinicians in diagnosing mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders. It is not a diagnosis but h

Personality Organization, Personality Styles, and the Emotional Reactions of Treating Clinicians.

This study explores the relationship between clinicians' emotional reactions and patients' level of personality organization and personality style assessed according to the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual-2 (Lingiardi & McWilliams, 2017). Level of personality pathology was positively associated with helpless and overwhelmed responses and negatively with positive responses. Parental and disengaged responses were associated with schizoid, anxious and dependent personalities. Parental and criticized responses were associated with narcissistic personalities; their depressed versions were positivel

[Personality and personality disorders in the elderly: diagnostic, course and management].

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about personality and personality disorders in the elderly. This paper summarizes the literature in these fields. METHODS: Articles were selected using a Medline and Google Scholar search. The keywords were personality, personality disorder, aging and elderly. RESULTS: Personality is not fixed and can change across the life-time including in the elderly. Personality disorders are frequent with a prevalence estimated between 10 and 20%. These rates are essentially equivalent to that of younger groups. Clinical presentation of these disorders may change over time. Lo

Personality trait dimensions and the pharmacological treatment of borderline personality disorder.

The number of well-designed placebo-controlled studies on pharmacological treatment of borderline personality disorder has been small. We present a breakdown of results of placebo-controlled pharmacological studies, sorting target symptoms into the trait dimensions of affective instability, anxiety inhibition, cognitive-perceptual disturbances, and impulsivity-aggression. Twenty randomized placebo-controlled pharmacological trials studying typical and atypical antipsychotics, selective serotonin reuptake and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and benzodi

Typus melancholicus personality type and the five-factor model of personality.

Personality traits are significant factors in the development and course of depression. Apart from the classical five-factor model of personality, other personality constellations, such as Tellenbach's Typus melancholicus, have been described in association with depressive disorder. Several instruments have been developed to assess the Typus melancholicus personality (TMP). A systematic comparison of these instruments has not been done to date. The goal of this study was the comparison of four questionnaires used in assessing TMP. Four TMP questionnaires were compared and their relationship to

Rethinking the comparison of borderline personality disorder and multiple personality disorder.

This article has made a number of points that assert what is today a minority position within the fields of MPD/DID and BPD. We hope our views will stimulate attempts by others to rethink their positions and test our assertions, so that issues surrounding these two disorders can be sharpened. For the sake of the clarity of future work, we summarize in outline form the essence of our viewpoint. 1. BPD and MPD/DID have similar appearing symptoms, such as identity problems, unstable affect modulation, self-destructive behaviors, chaotic impulse control, and troubled interpersonal relationships, b

[Passive-aggressive personality and dependent personality-- current status of the question].

The author makes a critical review of the literature concerning dependent and passive-aggressive personalities. After putting them in a historic perspective, he presents the various etiologic hypotheses. Special attention is given to the clinical and therapeutic aspects. The author concludes that despite the supposed high incidence of these two personality disorders, the reliability of the diagnoses and the natural history of the disorders remain to be explored in a prospective and systematic manner, before definite conclusions can be drawn regarding therapy.

Comparing personality dysfunction, maladaptive personality traits, and borderline personality disorder as models of emotion dysregulation in three adult samples.

The categorical borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis identifies people who struggle to manage negative emotions. As the field transitions to dimensional personality disorder (PD) models, it is important to know whether alternative diagnostic constructs capture emotion regulation difficulties to the same degree. If not, it may make sense to modify the dimensional models or else retain the BPD syndrome to preserve its incremental utility for clinical description, treatment planning, and prognosis. In three adult samples (total N = 1,197), we modeled self-rated emotion dysregulation as

Can DSM-IV borderline personality disorder be diagnosed via dimensional personality traits? Implications for the DSM-5 personality disorder proposal.

The proposal for the diagnosis of personality disorders (PDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5;American Psychiatric Association, in preparation) involves, in part, the use of elevated scores on dimensional personality traits. For instance, the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in the DSM-5 will require evidence of self- and interpersonal impairment as well as elevated scores on traits of emotional lability, anxiousness, separation insecurity, depressivity, impulsivity, risk taking, and hostility. Using a sample of individuals fro

The Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire predicts functioning styles of personality disorder: a trial in healthy subjects and personality-disorder patients.

Normal personality traits, as measured by the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), predicted some personality disorders in a sample of healthy volunteers. Whether these predictions could be more pronounced in patients with personality disorders remains unknown. We administered the ZKPQ and the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), which describes the functioning styles of personality disorder, in 134 patients with a range of personality disorders and in 268 age-, gender- and education level-matched healthy volunteers. Cluster A patients scored lowest on Sociability, cluster B highe

A multimetric examination of self-reported personality functioning and personality trait development.

Personality functioning, or Criterion A of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders, captures deficits in intrapersonal and interpersonal capacities, is believed to be relatively malleable, and is associated with normal range personality (e.g., Big Five traits). Questions about changes in personality functioning are of critical relevance for theory development and psychotherapeutic treatment of personality pathology; yet, little is known about its longitudinal development. Using a sample of German-speaking young adults (N = 1,440, Mage = 25.57), we examined 1-year unconditional and event

Bipolarity of maladaptive personality traits in the alternative model of personality disorders.

It has been posited that extremely high or extremely low levels of any personality trait in the five-factor model can be maladaptive. However, the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition (DSM-5) is composed almost exclusively of unipolar maladaptive traits. The lack of maladaptively low neuroticism and high extraversion fails to fully cover psychopathy; the lack of maladaptively high extraversion fails to cover histrionic personality disorder; the lack of maladaptively high agreeableness fails to cover

The Predictive Role of Personality Disorders and Personality Traits in Death Anxiety.

The current study investigates the interplay between personality traits, personality disorders, and death anxiety in a sample of 2331 participants (49% males; 51% females) across two phases. The Death Anxiety Scale, the Psychosocial Personality Inventory, and the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire were utilized. The findings revealed significant predictive relationships between personality disorders and death anxiety. Positive correlations were observed between death anxiety and nine personality disorders, including avoidant (r = .227), borderline (r = .123), dependent (r = .157), depressive

Cluster analysis of personality traits in psychiatric patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Though the heterogeneous expression of symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is well-known, it is far from fully understood. Hybrid models combining dimensional and categorical ways of diagnosing BPD have been suggested to better handle this heterogeneity, but more research is needed. The aim of this study was to identify potential clusters in BPD, and evaluate if these clusters differed in diagnostic composition, severity, psychiatric symptoms, emotion regulation and control, or sociodemographic features. METHODS: Clusters were based on personality traits measured wit

Relationship Between Big Five Personality Dimensions, Chronotype, and DSM-V Personality Disorders.

Morningness-eveningness (M/E) is an important variable in individual differences and has an impact on many areas of life including general and mental health. In previous work eveningness has shown to correlate to personality disorders (PDs) and mental instability such as psychoticism, depression, and bipolar disorders. Therefore, a relationship between M/E and PDs can be assumed but has never been tested. The aim of this study was to assess a possible relationship between DSM-5-PDs and circadian timing (chronotype; M/E). We used the Morningness-Eveningness Stability Scale improved and clock ti

[Gender differences in alcohol dependence: personality variables, psychopathological profile and personality disorders].

In this paper, gender differences in personality, psychopathology and personality disorders of alcohol-dependent patients are described. The sample consisted of 158 alcohol-dependent patients attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic (105 men and 55 women). All participants were assessed with various assessment tools related to personality (Impulsiveness Scale, Sensation Seeking Scale and STAI), psychopathology (SCL-90-R, BDI and Inadaptation Scale) and personality disorders (IPDE). There were no differences in personality variables, but the women had more anxiety and depressive symptoms and a

The typology of hypochondrical development of personality is presented on the basis of observation of 142 patients, 82 males and 60 females, mean age 45,7+/-3,8 years, with cardiac, dermatological and oncologic pathologies. 7 types of hypochondrical development of personality were singled out as paranoiac, aberrant type, overvalued, neurotic, masked hypochondria, "new life" type and hypochondrical dysthymia, and patterns of their formation were specified. Auditory P300 does not differentiate borderline personality disorder from schizotypal personality disorder.

The P300 response to an auditory two-tone discrimination task has previously been reported to have prolonged latency and reduced amplitude in schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. In this study, P300 was recorded from 23 subjects with borderline personality disorder, 12 subjects fulfilling criteria for both borderline and schizotypal personality, and 11 subjects with schizotypal personality. The mean P300 latency was similar in each of these groups and was significantly longer than in 32 patients with neuroses and other personality disorders and 74 nonpatient controls. These findi

Identity and Personality Pathology: A Convergence Across the DSM-5 Personality Disorder Model and the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders.

Long-standing theory regarding personality pathology as well as the recently proposed DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) posit that self/identity problems are a hallmark feature cutting across forms of personality pathology. With emergence of the AMPD, researchers have started to focus empirical investigations on identity pathology as a transdiagnostic factor across personality pathology. The current study investigated identity pathology across indicators of personality pathology from both the current categorical perspective (DSM-5 PD) and the dimensional perspective in t
