Phlebography of the internal spermatic vein in male patients suffering from infertility is a diagnostic procedure of low risk. In 432 patients examined for this condition, varicoceles were found, 67.5% of which occurred on the left, 13.8% on the right side. This fairly high number of varicoceles on the right side was surprising. It may be due to the technique, which requires standardisation and an experienced examiner in order to achieve a high rate of success. The possibility of a connection between unsatisfactory examination technique and unsatisfactory therapeutic results is discussed.

Twelve patients were examined by sonography and phlebography; of these, ten had suprarenal tumours and two suprarenal hyperplasia. The value of sonography and its place compared with radiological examinations is discussed. Sonography is an informative method of screening and should be employed whenever there is clinical suspicion of enlargement of the suprarenals before other radiological methods are used.

The authors describe a technique for retrograde phlebography of the orbit. A selection of the typical findings in 51 cases of orbital phlebography is presented. The diagnostic importance of the examination in cases of similar clinical symptoms has been stressed. This method is best suited to the investigation of cases of venous malformation, especially of the intra-orbital, peri-orbital and retro-orbital area. Side-effects and complications have been described. A comparative assessment against other competetive methods of investigation, like the computer tomography has been attempted.

Following a brief description of the anatomy of the adrenal gland the technique of adrenal phlebography is explained. So far this method has been used in 118 patients. This examination is indicated in cases with suspected hormon - active disease of the adrenal glands and to rule out spaceoccupying lesions as well as metastases in the adrenal gland. Characteristic radiologic findings are demonstrated. Causes for complications of this method and their possible prevention are discussed.

MR phlebography was recently proposed as a possible alternative to contrast venography in the detection of deep venous thrombosis. We focused our work on the study of the pelvic veins since it is at this level that contrast venography and the other noninvasive techniques, i.e., phlebography, impedance plethysmography and US, exhibit their major limitations. The frequency of recurrencies and of post-phlebitic syndrome after PE lead the Authors to perform phlebography of the legs before and after treatment of PE. A venous thrombosis was found in 124 cases out of 144 recent PE proven by angiopneumography. Phlebography of the internal spermatic vein was performed on 87 patients. In only two cases were slight complications (fever and chill) recorded after the examinations. The patients felt only a little discomfort during the examination. They did not have to be hospitalized before or after the examinations. In a few cases we saw sufficient values distally, at the level of L4-5. We have interpreted these cases as being normal.

Seventeen patients were investigated to localize carcinoid tumor growth in the small intestine and liver. Portography, selective phlebography of the intestinal veins, arteriography, and hormone assay (Serotonin, substance P) after simultaneous catheterization of the celiac artery and portal and caval veins were performed. Orbital phlebography has gained increasing importance in the evaluation of otologic and intracranial pathology. The practical use of this method in vascular and neoplastic lesions in the middle cranial fossa, as well as its probable value in cerebello-pontine angle tumours is reported.
