Calcium metabolism in adult outpatients with epilepsy receiving long-term anticonvulsant therapy.

Long-term anticonvulsant drug therapy may lead to abnormalities of calcium metabolism resulting in osteomalacia. The prevalence and severity of altered calcium metabolism was studied in an adult outpatient population of persons with epilepsy receiving anticonvulsant therapy for a minimum of 2 years. Assessment of calcium metabolism was based on serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and of plasma parathyroid hormone, intestinal absorption of isotopic calcium and skeletal bone mineral mass as determined by in vivo neutron activation or x-

Removal efficacy and mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus by biological aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (BA-PIA).

In this study, aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA) was used as a high-efficiency microbial carrier, and the biological Al-PIA (BA-PIA) was prepared by artificial aeration. Laboratory static experiments were conducted to study the effect of BA-PIA on reducing nitrogen and phosphorus contents in water. Physicochemical characterization and isotope tracing method were applied to analyze the removal mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus. High-throughput techniques were used to analyze the characteristic bacterial genus in the BA-PIA system. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal experiment was

Methodological aspects of methylphosphonic acid analysis: Determination in river and coastal water samples.

Methylphosphonic acid (MPn) is suspected to play an important role in aquatic systems like rivers or the open ocean. To gain more insights into the importance of MPn, e.g., for the aquatic phosphorus cycle, an analytical method for its quantitative determination was developed. The method is based on the use of an isotopically-labelled internal standard and sample preparation including solid-phase extraction (SPE). Instrumental detection was done using GC-MS after derivatisation of MPn with N-tert-Butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA). The study compares different isotopically

Black phosphorus-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry for the determination of low-molecular-weight compounds in biofluids.

Quantitative analysis of small molecules by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been a challenging task due to matrix-derived interferences in low m/z region and poor reproducibility of MS signal response. In this study, we developed an approach by applying black phosphorus (BP) as a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) matrix for the quantitative analysis of small molecules for the first time. Black phosphorus-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (BP/ALDI-MS) showed clear background and exhibited supe

A computational investigation of J couplings involving ²⁷Al, ¹⁷O, and ³¹P.

Indirect nuclear spin-spin (J) couplings between (31)P, (27)Al, and (17)O are computed for Cl(3)POAlCl(3), Ph(3)PO, Ph(3)PAlCl(3), Al(H(2)O)(6)(3+), an aluminophosphate model system, and grossite model systems, using the B3LYP hybrid functional and the pcJ-n and aug-pcJ-n basis sets. The results provide computational corroboration of the existence of J coupling constants between (31)P, (17)O, and (27)Al of suitable magnitude for INEPT-style experiments in which connectivity is established as a result of magnetization transfer using these couplings. Potentially useful correlations between struc

Rhizospheric phosphorus activation drives microbial degradation of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), such as tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), undergo accelerated microbial degradation in the rhizosphere, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Given their structural similarity to natural organophosphorus compounds, we hypothesized that rhizospheric phosphorus cycling contributes to OPE degradation. Using DNA-stable isotope probing, we identified active TCEP degraders and linked them to soil phosphate fractions. Plant cultivation reshaped degrader communities, increasing their relative abundance by 80.7% and predicted functional gene content by 20.8%, whil

Cyanide (13)C NMR hyperfine shifts in paramagnetic cyanide-bridged mixed-valence complexes.

Paramagnetic (hyperfine) NMR shifts in the (13)C cyanide bridge and (31)P resonances in a set of mixed valence complexes [(eta(5)-C(5)R(5))Ru(PPh(3))L((13)CN)Ru(NH(3))(5)](n+) (R = H; L = PPh(3), CO, NO(+); R = Me; L = PPh(3)) are sensitive to the extent of intermetallic charge-transfer, and are strongly solvent dependent.

Position-specific carbon stable isotope analysis of glyphosate: isotope fingerprinting of molecules within a mixture.

Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] is a widely used herbicide and a molecule of interest in the environmental sciences, due to its global use in agriculture and its potential impact on ecosystems. This study presents the first position-specific carbon isotope (13C/12C) analyses of glyphosates from multiple sources. In contrast to traditional isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), position-specific analysis provides 13C/12C ratios at individual carbon atom positions within a molecule, rather than an average carbon isotope ratio across a mixture or a specific compound. In this work, glyph

Sediment phosphorus extractants for phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance analysis: a quantitative evaluation.

The influence of pre-extractant, extractant, and post-extractant on total extracted amounts of P and organic P compound groups measured with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) in lacustrine sediment was examined. The main extractants investigated were sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium hydroxide ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (NaOH-EDTA) with bicarbonate buffered dithionite (BD) or EDTA as pre-extractants. Post extractions were conducted using either NaOH or NaOH-EDTA, depending on the main extractant. Results showed that the most efficient combination of extractants for total P yield w

Efficient in vivo 31P magnetization transfer approach for noninvasively determining multiple kinetic parameters and metabolic fluxes of ATP metabolism in the human brain.

ATP metabolism is controlled mainly by ATP synthase (ATP(ase)) and creatine kinase (CK) reactions that regulate cerebral ATP production, transportation, and utilization. These coupled reactions constitute a chemical exchange metabolic network of PCr<-->ATP<-->Pi characterized by two forward and two reverse reaction fluxes, which can be studied noninvasively by in vivo (31)P MRS combined with magnetization transfer (MT). However, it is still debated whether current MT approaches can precisely determine all of these fluxes. We developed and tested a modified in vivo (31)P MT approach based on a
