Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuric acute renal failure may occur following strenuous exercise and may be more common in less physically conditioned persons. A case of moderately severe acute renal failure after the exercise involved in a routine Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is described. This level of exertion, which is universally applied to Army personnel, should be recognized as a potential etiology of rhabdomyolysis. Prospective studies may help define the exact risk to renal function provided by the APFT.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic illness with post-exertional malaise (PEM) as a key symptom. This study categorized participants with ME/CFS who met PEM criteria into four groups based on severity of physical and mental PEM: severe physical PEM (Physical group), severe mental PEM (Mental group), both severe (Both group), or neither severe (Neither group). We studied the unnatural history of sinus node function in severe sick sinus syndrome treated with AAI or DDD pacemakers. In 19 patients (10 m; 9 f; mean age +/- 1 SD 69 +/- 7 years) we executed serial bicycle exercise tests and electrophysiological studies before, 7 days and 3 months after pacemaker implant. Sinus heart rate at maximum effort was: 118 +/- 23 beats/min and 117 +/- 23 beats/min (two different evaluations) before pacemaker implant, 125 +/- 21 beats/min after 7 days (p less than 0.05) and 133 +/- 20 beats/min after 3 months (p less than 0.001) with an average increment of 12.7%.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the association between ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) of walking and major mobility disability (MMD), as well as their transitions in response to a physical activity (PA) compared to a health education (HE) program.
METHODS: Older adults (n = 1633) who were at risk for mobility impairment were randomized to structured PA or HE programs. During a 400 m walk, participants rated exertion as "light" or "hard." An MMD event was defined as the inability to walk 400 m. MMD events and RPE values were assessed every 6 months for an average of 2.6 years.

PURPOSE: Symptom scores commonly measured following concussion were compared between male and female adolescents with (Hx+) and without (Hx-) a history of concussion, pre and post physical exertion testing.
