KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Children with Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) often have trouble breathing and eating as soon as they are born. If conservative therapy fails to alleviate airway obstruction, surgical surgery may be considered. Patients with PRS require multidisciplinary approaches for treatment.
ABSTRACT: Pierre Robin syndrome is a common craniofacial abnormality that causes glossoptosis and blockage of the upper airway. This renders it difficult to feed, which leads to severe malnutrition. This condition is also often marked by an absence of a soft palate. We mention a newborn with Pierre …

Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is characterized by the triad of retrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. PRS may occur in isolation or in conjunction with other syndromes. Distinguishing isolated and syndromic forms of PRS helps clinicians decide the management plan. We describe two cases of PRS of Indian ethnicity and describe some of the difficulties that we faced while distinguishing isolated PRS from syndromic PRS. Both cases had a similar clinical presentation. However, one of the cases had a positive family history of congenital deafness and cleft palate, whereas the other case h

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) effectively improves airway obstruction in Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) patients. However, whether or not early MDO is beneficial to the development of children is still controversial. To observe the influence of PRS patient age at the time of MDO on their development, the authors retrospectively analyzed preoperative and postoperative body weight in 41 children with PRS who underwent MDO treatment from 2014 to 2016. The body weight of the infants at the time of birth, first visit, MDO surgery, distractor removal, and palatoplasty surgery was recorded. …

PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare neoplasm that develops on the oronasal cavity as an expanding and cavity-filling lesion. We present a rare case of nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with a cleft palate and bifid tongue in a patient with Pierre Robin syndrome.
METHODS: A preterm male neonate of 33 weeks and 6 days was referred to our department. A protruding solid mass with approximately 7.0 × 4.0-cm size arising from the vomer and combined cleft palate and tongue covered with pinkish skin with lanugo were observed. In addition, there was a bandlike tissue connecting vomer and …

A functional and simple surgical method for treating the respiratory distress of the neonate affected by Pierre Robin syndrome is described. The base of the tongue is placed in an anterior position via a buried wire suture tied around the body of the hyoid. The method proposed in this paper fulfills the following: 1. It is physiologic since the infant is able to suckle and maintain its nutrition by preserving the function of the mobile portion of the tongue for deglutition. 2. Maintenance of the "pushing" action of the tongue stimulates growth of the mandible. 3. The anchoring wire is not expo…

The Pierre-Robin Syndrome (PRS) is a rare congenital abnormality, with an approximately 1/30,000 estimated rate, characterized by the presence of the combination of mandibular hypoplasia (micrognathia or small jaw), glossoptosis (retrusion of the tongue into the pharyngeal airway) and, often, a posterior cleft of the secondary palate. It may be an isolated occurrence or part of a more complex syndrome and it is associated with long-term respiratory, nutritional, and developmental difficulties. Stickler syndrome (SS) is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder estimated to affect ap

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular distraction is recognized as a treatment of respiratory distress in neonates with microretrognathia as seen in the Pierre Robin syndrome. However, mandibular distraction is a complex and lengthy treatment involving 2 to 4 weeks of distraction and another 4 to 12 weeks for bone consolidation. This study was performed to establish the safety and effectiveness of rapid protocol distraction osteogenesis with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) in neonates with the Pierre Robin syndrome.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients treated in our de…

The aim of this paper was to enlighten the peculiar findings of the Pierre Robin sequence, a rare congenital anomaly with important afterbirth comorbidities. The management of this pathology requires highly specialised centers and highly qualified specialists in order to offer the best therapeutic strategy to the affected child. Early diagnosis and parental counseling play a key role in the managing of PRS: an earlier activation of the treatment path helps to yield better outcomes and to prevent complications. A case of a newborn affected by PRS is presented, showing the steps of the treatment

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea is highly prevalent in non-syndromic Pierre Robin sequence patients. Studies have found a probable relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and nasal obstruction and between obstructive sleep apnea and enuresis. Assessment of the relationship between these variables in non-syndromic Pierre Robin sequence patients is scarce.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, nasal obstruction and enuresis, determining the prevalence of symptoms suggestive of these conditions, in schoolchildren wi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the method of treatment of Pierre Robin syndrome using the orthodontic device PEBP (pre-epiglottic baton plate).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 5 patients with moderate SPD aged 1 to 3 months. All patients showed signs of respiratory failure and impaired swallowing. Respiratory failure was assessed based on oxygen concentration by pulse oximetry, respiratory rate (BPD), and skin color. Swallowing was evaluated for the possibility of taking food through the mouth and refusing a nasogastric tube. To eliminate violations, the orthodontic dev…

Babies with Pierre Robin syndrome have serious life-threatening risks because of acute respiratory distress and difficult airway management. It is difficult to perform endotracheal intubation in these babies for general anesthesia. We present successful insertion of laryngeal mask airway in a neonate with typical clinical features of Pierre-Robin syndrome using a size 1 laryngeal mask airway for a ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation. The patient had micrognathia, glossoptosis with cleft palate, and partial trismus. His mouth opening was restricted to 0.6 cm. Anesthesia was deepened with sevof…

BACKGROUND: Humidification is an important process in clinical oxygen therapy. We aimed to evaluate the effects and safety of humidified versus nonhumidified low-flow oxygen therapy in children with Pierre-Robin syndrome.
METHODS: This study was an open-label, single-centered randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a parallel group design. The study protocol has been registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR1900021584). The children were randomized to the humidified versus nonhumidified groups. Average arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) and carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaC

INTRODUCTION: Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) and nonsyndromic Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) share mandibular deficiency as a similar clinical finding. This study aimed to compare the mandibular size and morphology of subjects with TCS and PRS.
METHODS: Group TCS was composed of 17 subjects (7 male, 10 female) with a mean age of 11.5 years (standard deviation, 4.4) from a single center. Group PRS was composed of 17 subjects paired by age and sex with group TCS. Preorthodontic cone-beam computed tomography examinations of all patients were evaluated using Mimics Innovation Suite 17.0 (Materialis

The authors report the second case in the English language literature of a rare abnormality of the fingers and nails associated with Pierre Robin syndrome. The patient was born at term to non-consanguineous parents. The only potentially toxic drug taken by the mother during the first months of pregnancy was Sympathyl, a combined preparation of phenobarbitone, methenamine and plant extracts (boldo, crataegus) used as sedative. The child presented at birth with typical Pierre Robin syndrome responsible for respiratory distress, associated with hypotonia, dysplasia of the right hip and cardiac mu…

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome is a rare condition first identified in 1970. The majority of cases are reported to be autosomal dominant with variable expression and penetrance. The most common clinical feature is ectodermal dysplasia. Ectrodactyly, cleft lip with or with out cleft palate and urogenital anomalies are also main clinical features of EEC syndrome. Pierre Robin (PR) sequence has the clinical findings of micro-retrognathia, retroposed tongue (glossoptosis), cleft of the secondary palate, and upper airway obstruction. Etiologically PR sequence is heterogen
