Intraperitoneal injection of R-(+)-pulegone (pulegone), the main constituent of pennyroyal oil, to ddY mice caused extensive liver injury as characterized by an increase in serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activity and centrilobular necrosis of hepatocytes. Treatments of mice with the cytochrome P-450 enzyme inhibitors, SKF-525A, metyrapone, piperonyl butoxide, and carbon disulfide (CS2), prevented or markedly alleviated the hepatotoxicity of pulegone. These results are compatible with the view that some metabolite of pulegone is responsible for the liver injury in mice.

Seed ticks, the first-stage larvae of hard ticks, are not always recognized. They are tiny (0.6 mm) and have six legs, rather than the eight legs found on nymphal and adult ticks. Seed ticks may transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, babesiosis and Lyme disease. Pediculocides are effective in removing the larvae.

Head-lice infestations periodically cause disruption at schools and crèches. The life cycle of the insect and the treatment of infestation are discussed. Treatment is usually relatively simple and effective, relying mainly on the use of insecticides such as gamma benzene hexachloride, malathion and pyrethrins. Appropriate therapy for problem areas, for example the eyebrows, is also described.

Pediculosis pubis is caused by Phthirus pubis. The disease can be sexually transmitted. Patients main complain is of itch in the pubic area.
