Galanthamine pattern in Narcissus confusus plants.

Galanthamine is an Amaryllidaceae-type alkaloid with acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity which is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The distribution of galanthamine and four other alkaloids in different organs of Narcissus confusus plants, as well as the variations occurring during the ontogenic cycle of this plant species, was studied. The five alkaloids were found to be present in all the organs at every stage, with the exception of haemanthamine in senescent flowers. The highest amount of alkaloids occurred in the bulb at the emerging stage, galanthamine being the most abun…

Poisonous plants affecting livestock in Brazil.

Plant poisoning, together with rabies and botulism, are the main causes of death in adult cattle in Brazil. Estimates indicate that about one million head of cattle die annually through plant poisoning in this country. There are approximately 75 plants of practical importance to animal husbandry that have had their toxicity confirmed by experiments with the animal species affected under natural conditions. The great majority of these plants only occur in Brazil and neighbouring countries. A few of them are forage plants that can become toxic under certain conditions. In this review the poisono…

[Allergic contact dermatitis caused by plants].

The proliferation of house and garden plants, some of them highly sensitizing, produced by the general improvement of the standard of living, is causing an increase in the number of cases of contact dermatitis from plants with both irritative and allergic mechanisms. During the past 12 years, we have studied 43 cases of allergic eczema caused by plant contact as primary sensitization which supposes 2.4% of the patients with allergic contact dermatitis attended in our Services. The majority of patients were women (65%) as opposed to 35% men while the ages varied from 12 to 70 years with an aver…

Workplace pollution in two viscose plants.

The CS2 and H2S pollution was evaluated in two viscose plants: a sponge factory and a rayon spinning mill. Two kinds of sampling were used: background samples with the help of a laboratory van equipped with a Gas Phase Chromatograph and an Air Sampler allowing sequential workplace monitoring. personal samples. The results show the H2S pollution is not negligible and can even be equal to that with CS2 in some workshops (e.g. the spinning-room). The proposed methodology permits an accurate description of the pollution.

Synthetic transcriptional repression systems in plants.

Transcriptional repression is a fundamental regulatory mechanism that enables precise control of gene expression in response to developmental signals and environmental stimuli. Synthetic biology can leverage this process within plants to engineer programmable transgene repression systems. This review examines strategies for harnessing prokaryotic repressors in eukaryotic systems to develop synthetic repression systems in plants. These systems utilize modular promoter and repressor architectures that can be tuned through operator placement and repression-domain fusion, respectively, to adjust t…

Engineering Biomimetic Sporangia in Land Plants.

The land plant sporangium is unique in its ability to initiate differentiation of the reproductive germ line, leading directly to meiosis and the formation of eggs and sperm; but our lack of understanding of the processes underlying gametogenesis in plants remains a major obstacle in our ability to modify the sexual cycle for the benefit of crop science. Here we report an initial attempt to create an engineered structure which, with further development, could reproduce the physical and mechanical properties of the land plant sporangium. While the work reported here does not achieve the ultimat…

How Plants Recalibrate Cellular Iron Homeostasis.

Insufficient iron supply poses severe constraints on plants, restricting species with inefficient iron uptake mechanisms from habitats with low iron availability and causing yield losses in agricultural ecosystems. Iron deficiency also poses a severe threat on human health. Anemia resulting from insufficient iron intake is affecting one of four people in the world. It is, therefore, imperative to understand the mechanisms by which plants acquire iron against a huge soil-cell gradient and how iron is distributed within the plant to develop strategies that increase its concentration in edible pl…

The Flavonoid Biosynthesis Network in Plants.

Flavonoids are an important class of secondary metabolites widely found in plants, contributing to plant growth and development and having prominent applications in food and medicine. The biosynthesis of flavonoids has long been the focus of intense research in plant biology. Flavonoids are derived from the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway, and have a basic structure that comprises a C15 benzene ring structure of C6-C3-C6. Over recent decades, a considerable number of studies have been directed at elucidating the mechanisms involved in flavonoid biosynthesis in plants. In this review, we syst…

Systemic propagation of immunity in plants.

Systemic immunity triggered by local plant-microbe interactions is studied as systemic acquired resistance (SAR) or induced systemic resista … inter-plant defense propagation through volatile organic compounds that are emitted by SAR-induced plants and recognized as defense cues by neighboring plants. Both SAR and ISR influence phytohormone crosstalk towards enhanced defense against pathogens, which at the same time affects the composition of the plant microbiome. This potentially leads to fur …

Radiostrontium transport in plants and phytoremediation.

Radiostrontium is a common product of nuclear fission and was emitted into the environment in the course of nuclear weapon tests as well as from nuclear reactor accidents. The release of 90Sr and 89Sr into the environment can pose health threats due to their characteristics such as high specific activities and easy access in human body due to its chemical analogy to calcium. Radiostrontium enters the human food chain by the consumption of plants grown on sites comprising fission-derived radionuclides. For humans, Sr is not an essential element, but, due to solubility in water and homology with…

Properties for sourcing Nigerian larvicidal plants.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of chikungunya, yellow and dengue fevers. Dengue fever is the major cause of child morbidity and hospitalisation in some Asian and African countries, while yellow fever is prevalent in Nigeria. The development of resistance to the available insecticides has necessitated the continued search for safer ones from plants. Eighteen plant extracts with ethnomedical claims of or demonstrated febrifuge, antimalarial, insecticidal and insect repellent biological activities were tested for activity against the fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. About 61% of the ei…

Plants' metabolites as potential antiobesity agents.

Obesity and obesity-related complications are on the increase both in the developed and developing world. Since existing pharmaceuticals fail to come up with long-term solutions to address this issue, there is an ever-pressing need to find and develop new drugs and alternatives. Natural products, particularly medicinal plants, are believed to harbor potential antiobesity agents that can act through various mechanisms either by preventing weight gain or promoting weight loss amongst others. The inhibition of key lipid and carbohydrate hydrolyzing and metabolizing enzymes, disruption of adipogen…

Novel metabolism of nitrogen in plants.

Our previous study showed that approximately one-third of the nitrogen of 15N-labeled NO2 taken up into plants was converted to a previously unknown organic nitrogen (hereafter designated UN) that was not recoverable by the Kjeldahl method (Morikawa et al., 2004). In this communication, we discuss metabolic and physiological relevance of the UN based on our newest experimental results. All of the 12 plant species were found to form UN derived from NO2 (about 10-30% of the total nitrogen derived from NO2). The UN was formed also from nitrate nitrogen in various plant species. Thus, UN is a comm…

Removal of cyanide by woody plants.

Hydrogen cyanide is a high volume production chemical that causes severe environmental problems. The toxicity of potassium cyanide (KCN) to basket willow trees (Salix viminalis) was tested. In aqueous solution, 2 mg CN l(-1) as KCN depressed the transpiration after 72 h about 50%. Trees exposed to 0.4 mg CN l(-1) in aqueous solution showed initially a depression of transpiration, but recovered. Doses of 8 and 20 mg CN l(-1) in aqueous solution were quickly mortal to the trees. At the end of the test, almost all cyanide had disappeared from the solutions. Levels of cyanide in plants were relate…
