[Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in children].

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the major causes of severe invasive infections in young children. As purified polysaccharide are not immunogenic in infants, vaccines containing the bacterial polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein have been developed according to the model that has proved to be effective for Haemophilus influenzae b and group C meningococcus. A conjugate vaccine containing the 7 serotypes responsible for about 90% of the invasive infections occuring in children in the United States has been shown to have a 97% protective efficacy against infections caused by vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccine in rheumatoid arthritis.

To determine the ability of patients with rheumatoid arthritis to respond to pneumococcal vaccination and whether age or methotrexate affects this response, we studied 40 patients with rheumatoid arthritis who received pneumococcal vaccination. Patients were equally divided into four groups according to age and whether or not they were taking methotrexate. Pneumococcal antibody levels were drawn prevaccination and 6 weeks post-vaccination.Eighty percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients vaccinated achieved protective levels of antibodies. The age of the patient did not affect this response, but

[Pneumococcal disease and its prevention. The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine].

Pneumococcal disease is a major cause of morbidity, hospitalization and mortality. Two age groups show a greater incidence and severity of the disease: children under the age of 5 years (mainly during the first 2 years of life) and adults aged more than 65 years. The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, which was commercialized in Spain in June 2001, is efficacious in children aged less than 2 years and, unlike the non-conjugate 23-valent vaccine, it induces immunological memory. In Spain the heptavalent vaccine covers 80 % of serotypes causing pneumococcal invasive disease and acute ot

[THE EFFECT OF PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE ON PNEUMOCOCCAL CARRIAGE AND INVASIVE DISEASE].

Pneumococcal infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children and adults worldwide. Acquisition and carriage of pneumococci are essential for the development of pneumococcal invasive (bacteremia, meningitis) and non-invasive disease. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) differ from the polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) in its enhanced immunity and ability to prevent carriage of pneumococci. With the implementation of PCV to pediatric vaccination programs in different countries, we witnessed a change in the patterns of pneumococcal carriage and illness. In this review t

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine and Clinically Suspected Invasive Pneumococcal Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) was earlier shown to reduce clinically suspected, non-laboratory-confirmed invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in a cluster-randomized trial (the Finnish Invasive Pneumococcal disease trial). PCV10 was introduced into the Finnish national vaccination program in September 2010 using a 3-dose schedule. We evaluated the impact of PCV10 on clinically suspected IPD among vaccine-eligible children in a population-based nationwide study. METHODS: The target cohort eligible for vaccination program (children born June 2010-September 2013) wa

Impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on the prevention of invasive pneumococcal diseases.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in invasive pneumococcal diseases in the United States, and to analyze the potential impact of this vaccine in Brazil. Pneumococcal Carriage in Children under Five Years in Uganda-Will Present Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines Be Appropriate?

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is the major cause of death in children globally, with more than 900,000 deaths annually in children under five years of age. Streptococcus pneumoniae causes most deaths, most often in the form of community acquired pneumonia. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) are currently being implemented in many low-income countries. PCVs decrease vaccine-type pneumococcal carriage, a prerequisite for invasive pneumococcal disease, and thereby affects pneumococcal disease and transmission. In Uganda, PCV was launched in 2014, but baseline data is lacking for pneumococcal serotype

New Pneumococcal Vaccines for Prevention of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in Adult Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at a high risk of developing invasive pneumococcal infection both before and after they are diagnosed. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices now endorses use of 2 new pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, PCV15 (Vaxneuvance) and PCV20 (Prevnar 20), for patients who have never received a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or those with unknown vaccination history. Previous studies have shown that pneumococcal vaccination can decrease the risk of developing severe pneumococcal disease; therefore, it is important that patients with IBD receive

Adult Pneumococcal Vaccination in Latin America: The Next Step Beyond Pediatric Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine.

Pneumococcal disease remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality among adults, particularly older individuals and those with chronic medical conditions. While pediatric pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) programs have substantially reduced vaccine-type disease and generated indirect protection through herd effects, a persistent burden of pneumococcal infection continues to affect adult populations in Latin America. Demographic ageing, the growing prevalence of chronic diseases, immunosenescence, and shifts in circulating pneumococcal serotypes contribute to sustaining this residual

Invasive Pneumococcal Infections Among Moroccan Children: Pneumococcal Vaccination Challenges in the Mature Vaccine Era.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae, a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality, disproportionately affects children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Despite vaccination efforts, the challenge of serotype replacement highlights the ongoing struggle against invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) in Morocco, emphasizing the need for updated public health strategies and vaccine efficacy assessments. METHODS: This study was conducted at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital Center and the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center from 2019 to 2022, focusing on hospitalized chil

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for preventing acute otitis media in children.

BACKGROUND: Prior to introducing pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), Streptococcus pneumoniae was most commonly isolated from the middle ear fluid of children with acute otitis media (AOM). Reducing nasopharyngeal colonisation of this bacterium by PCVs may lead to a decline in AOM. The effects of PCVs deserve ongoing monitoring since studies from the post-PCV era report a shift in causative otopathogens towards non-vaccine serotypes and other bacteria. This updated Cochrane Review was first published in 2002 and updated in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of PC

Meeting the challenge: prevention of pneumococcal disease with conjugate vaccines.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the leading causes of both invasive and noninvasive diseases in the pediatric population and continues to represent a significant public health burden worldwide. The increasing incidence of antibioticresistant strains of the pathogen has complicated treatment and management of the various pneumococcal disease manifestations. Thus, the best management strategy may be the prevention of pneumococcal diseases through vaccination. Although several pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have been clinically studied in infants and children, only a 7-valent conjugate vaccin
