Examination of Genomic and Transcriptomic Alterations in a Morphologically Stable Line, MU1, Generated by Intergeneric Pollination.

Interspecific hybridization creates genetic variation useful for crop improvement. However, whether pollen from a different genus affects the genomic stability and/or transcriptome of the recipient species during intergeneric pollination has not been investigated. Here, we crossed japonica rice cv. Z12 with the maize accession B73 (pollen donor) and obtained a morphologically stable line, MU1, exhibiting moderate dwarfism, higher tiller number, and increased grain weight compared with Z12. To reveal the genetic basis of these morphological changes in MU1, we performed whole-genome resequencing

Development of an open-pollinated genetic mapping framework to facilitate the identification of QTL in apples.

Genetic mapping of traits in apples (Malus domestica), a temperate woody perennial, is challenging due to high heterozygosity, long juvenility, and extensive spatial maintenance requirements for the populations. These factors limit the effective use of traditional quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping methods in identifying the genetic basis of traits critical for apple production, marketability, and sustainability. We explored the use of open-pollinated (OP) genetic mapping as an alternative to conventional biparental QTL mapping and genome-wide association studies. A QTL was simulated, and

Temporal integration of diurnal and nocturnal interactions enhances the robustness of plant-pollinator networks.

Global pollinator declines necessitate a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that underpin the stability of plant-pollinator networks. However, ecological network research has historically been biased toward diurnal species, neglecting how nocturnal interactions influence overall stability. To address this gap, we compiled a comprehensive dataset of 23 multilayer pollination networks, modeling diel networks as two temporal layers, diurnal and nocturnal, connected by shared plant species globally. We revealed an asymmetric structure between the two layers. The diurnal layer was more s

Fragment Edges Benefit a Common Predator of Pollinators via Bottom-Up Effects.

Defaunation following habitat fragmentation typically threatens predators at higher trophic levels, which further alter prey and plants via top-down effects. However, few studies test if fragmented habitats (e.g., forest edges) support predators through bottom-up effects. Here, we tested the effects of habitat fragmentation on multi-trophic interactions involving flowering plants, pollinators, and a common predatory spider (Atypus heterothecus). We found that spider biomass was higher at the edges of large islands than in their interiors, with no significant effect of island area or isolation.

Assessing Pollinator Community Recovery in Restored Agroecosystems Using the Recovery Debt Framework.

Recovery debt (RD) quantifies the interim deficit of biodiversity and function during the recovery process after disturbance. Unlike typical recovery indices derived from data on experimental-control comparisons, RD further considers the target (reference) biodiversity level, modelling the rate at which it is approached over time. However, the application of the RD approach to active restoration has not been explicitly implemented to date. Here, we extend the RD framework to evaluate active ecological restoration in agricultural systems, defining the onset of recovery as the shift from intensi

Global agriculture shows limited evidence of a pollinator-driven yield decline to date.

BACKGROUND: During recent decades, declines in the abundance and diversity of wild pollinators have been widely documented, largely driven by human-induced disturbance, such as agricultural expansion, land-use change, pesticide use, invasive species, urbanization, and climate change. Because deficits in animal pollination often limit fruit and seed production in both wild plants and cultivated crops -due to insufficient or ineffective pollen deposition on flowers' stigmas- pollinator decline has raised concern about consequences for plant reproduction and agricultural yields. Expected increase

High Temporal Beta-Diversity of Pollinators in Early Successional Forests After Windthrow.

Forest windthrows have generally a positive effect on the biodiversity of understory vegetation and on insects associated with open conditions, such as pollinators. However, the early successional stage after forest disturbances can be highly heterogeneous in both space and time. While most of the available literature has focused on finding spatial patterns of biodiversity in relation to the disturbed environment, few studies have measured the temporal changes occurring in wind-affected forests, especially within the early successional stage. Here, we focused on describing the temporal dynamic

Yield vulnerability of low-income smallholders to pollinator declines in Brazil is biome-dependent.

Habitat loss and degradation, mainly driven by agricultural expansion and intensification, alter ecological processes, ecosystem services and human well-being at a global scale. Pollinator populations in degraded agricultural areas tend to collapse, which in turn can reduce the effective pollination of agricultural crops and food production, particularly in leading food producing countries, such as Brazil. We sought to understand how the vulnerability to pollinator failure and the economic value of pollination (EVP) are associated with farmland size, farmer income, habitat loss, and the size o

How pollinator movement patterns emerge from the interaction between cognition and the environment.

Nectar-feeding insects, birds and mammals develop complex foraging patterns, such as repetitive multi-destination routes known as 'traplines'. While this behaviour likely influences animals' foraging success and plant mating patterns, its drivers and prevalence across species and environments remain poorly understood. Through a systematic literature review, we show that pollinators display varying degrees of movement repetitiveness. Then, using a cognitively realistic agent-based model that we parametrized with data from bee foraging studies, we demonstrate how the interplay between cognition,

Buzz-pollinating bees deliver thoracic vibrations to flowers through periodic biting.

Pollinator behavior is vital to plant-pollinator interactions, affecting the acquisition of floral rewards, patterns of pollen transfer, and plant reproductive success. During buzz pollination, bees produce vibrations with their indirect flight muscles to extract pollen from tube-like flowers. Vibrations can be transmitted to the flower via the mandibles, abdomen, legs, or thorax directly. Vibration amplitude at the flower determines the rate of pollen release and should vary with the coupling of bee and flower. This coupling often occurs through anther biting, but no studies have quantified h

Sexual Differences in Eurya loquaiana Dunn Floral Scent and How Pollinators Respond.

Eurya plants are usually dioecious or subdioecious with small fragrant flowers. Here, we investigate the floral scent components of the subdioecious species Eurya loquaiana Dunn and how floral scent affects pollinators. Headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was used to compare the floral scents of male, female, and hermaphrodite flowers. We also test whether differences in floral scent affect the foraging behaviors of pollinators and describe the flower morphological traits of the three sexes. Twenty-eight floral scent compounds were tentati

Direct and Ambient Light Pollution Alters Recruitment for a Diurnal Plant-Pollinator System.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) functions as a novel environmental stimulus that has the potential to disrupt interactions among species. Despite recent efforts to explain nocturnal pollinators' responses to this stimulus, the likelihood and associated mechanisms of attraction toward artificial light and potential consequences on fitness for diurnal pollinators are still largely unclear. Here, we took advantage of the obligate mutualism between yucca moths (Tegeticula maculata maculata) and yucca plants (Hesperoyucca whipplei) to understand how direct light exposure and skyglow can influence

Beyond neonicotinoids - Wild pollinators are exposed to a range of pesticides while foraging in agroecosystems.

Pesticide exposure is a growing global concern for pollinator conservation. While most current pesticide studies have specifically focused on the impacts of neonicotinoid insecticides toward honeybees and some native bee species, wild pollinators may be exposed to a broader range of agrochemicals. In 2016 and 2017 we collected a total of 637 wild bees and butterflies from the margins of cultivated agricultural fields situated on five Conservation Areas in mid-northern Missouri. Pollinators were composited by individual genera (90 samples) and whole tissues were then analyzed for the presence o

Comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity among sympatric Gomesa (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae).

The incredible pollination mechanisms displayed by orchid flowers has inspired biologists over the centuries. Based on the intriguing flower structures, the relationship among orchid species and their pollinators has been frequently regarded as very specialised. Given that visits on flowers pollinated by oil-collecting bees are regularly rare, and in Oncidiinae the flowers frequently attractexclusively species that act as effective pollinators, the comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity of two sympatric Gomesa (G. varicosa and G. montana; Oncidiinae) were analysedbased on

A restatement of the natural science evidence base concerning neonicotinoid insecticides and insect pollinators.

There is evidence that in Europe and North America many species of pollinators are in decline, both in abundance and distribution. Although there is a long list of potential causes of this decline, there is concern that neonicotinoid insecticides, in particular through their use as seed treatments are, at least in part, responsible. This paper describes a project that set out to summarize the natural science evidence base relevant to neonicotinoid insecticides and insect pollinators in as policy-neutral terms as possible. A series of evidence statements are listed and categorized according to

Dimorphic enantiostyly and its function for pollination by carpenter bees in a pollen-rewarding Caribbean bloodwort.

PREMISE: Flowers that present their anthers and stigma in close proximity can achieve precise animal-mediated pollen transfer, but risk self-pollination. One evolutionary solution is reciprocal herkogamy. Reciprocity of anther and style positions among different plants (i.e., a genetic dimorphism) is common in distylous plants, but very rare in enantiostylous plants. We investigated the pollination and reproductive system of the enantiostylous Caribbean plant Cubanicula xanthorrhizos (Haemodoraceae). METHODS: We assessed stylar orientation of flowers and conducted controlled pollination exper

A dual pollination strategy combining perfume attraction and food deception in Galeandra blanchetii E.S. Rand (Orchidaceae).

The evolutionary origin of the perfume flower syndrome remains unclear. Orchids of the subtribe Catasetinae help elucidate the evolution of this syndrome, but knowledge gaps regarding the pollination biology of Galeandra hinder a full understanding of the process. This study addresses this gap by investigating G. blanchetii, an epiphytic Catasetinae species endemic to Brazil. We explored its floral and reproductive biology, including floral anatomy, scent characterization and pollinator mechanical fit, to clarify the role of floral signals in pollinator attraction. We found epidermal osmophore

Vibration mechanics involved in buzz pollination lead to size-dependent associations between bumblebees and Pedicularis flowers.

Floral traits modify pollinator behavior and shape the plant-pollinator interaction pattern at ecological and evolutionary levels. Biomechanical traits are important in mediating interactions between flowers and their pollinators in some cases, such as in buzz pollination. During buzz pollination, a bee produces vibrations using its thoracic muscles and transfers these vibrations primarily through its mandibles as it bites the flower. The interaction between buzz-pollinated flowers and their pollinators is influenced by their physical size relative to each other, but the drivers of these size-

Mechanical mismatch of pollination-related traits causes severe pollen limitation in the Roscoea purpurea-Philoliche longirostris mutualism.

The geographical variation in the strength and direction of selection in highly specialized plant-pollinator mutualisms can lead to different interaction outcomes among populations. In this study, we investigated the mutualistic interaction between an alpine ginger Roscoea purpurea and a long-tongued tabanid fly Philoliche longirostris across eight populations in central Nepal. We measured the flower and fly traits, assessed the visitation behaviour and frequencies of P. longirostris, and quantified the reproductive success of R. purpurea. Our results revealed that in three of the eight popula

Sharing of 4-hydroxy-3-(methylthio)benzaldehyde as a pollination semiochemical among distantly related sexually deceptive orchids.

Sexually deceptive orchids mimic female mating signals of their pollinators to achieve pollination. In Australia, multiple orchid genera exploit male thynnine wasps as pollinators, raising the possibility of convergent evolution of floral traits. This study investigates the chemical basis of attraction in Spiculaea ciliata and its pollinator Thynnoturneria abspiculus, uncovering the use of shared chemical attractants. Flowers of S. ciliata were collected in the field and extracted in dichloromethane and methanol. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and field bioassays were used to ide
